1A mild answer breaketh wrath: but a harsh word stirreth up fury.
1穏やかな答えは憤りを退けるが、 厳しい言葉は怒りをかき立てる。
2The tongue of the wise adorneth knowledge: but the mouth of fools bubbleth out folly.
2知恵のある者の舌は知識を適切に語るが、 愚かな者の口は愚かさをあふれ出させる。
3The eyes of the Lord in every place behold the good and the evil.
3主の目は至る所にあり、 悪い者も良い者も見ておられる。
4A peaceable tongue is a tree of life: but that which is immoderate, shall crush the spirit.
4穏やかな舌は命の木であるが、 よこしまな舌は心を打ち砕く。
5A fool laugheth at the instruction of his father: but he that regardeth reproofs shall become prudent. In abundant justice there is the greatest strength: but the devices of the wicked shall be rooted out.
5愚かな者は父の教訓を侮るが、 叱責に心を留める者は慎重に行動する。
6The house of the just is very much strength: and in the fruits of the wicked is trouble.
6義人の家には多くの宝があるが、 悪しき者の収入には悩みが伴う。
7The lips of the wise shall disperse knowledge: the heart of fools shall be unlike.
7知恵のある者の唇は知識を広めるが、 愚かな者の心に知識はない。
8The victims of the wicked are abominable to the Lord: the vows of the just are acceptable.
8悪しき者のささげ物は主に忌み嫌われるが、 正しい者の祈りは主に喜ばれる。
9The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: he that followeth justice is beloved by him.
9悪しき者の道は主に忌み嫌われるが、 主は義を追い求める者を愛する。
10Instruction is grievous to him that forsaketh the way of life: he that hateth reproof shall die.
10道を捨てる者には厳しい訓練があり、 叱責を憎む者は死ぬ。
11Hell and destruction are before the Lord: how much more the hearts of the children of men?
11よみとアバドンは主の前にある。 まして人の子らの心は、なおさらではないか。
12A corrupt man loveth not one that reproveth him: nor will he go to the wise.
12あざける者は叱責されることを好まず、 知恵のある者たちのところへ行こうとしない。
13A glad heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by grief of mind the spirit is cast down.
13喜びに満ちた心は顔を明るくするが、 心が痛むと気力はくじかれる。
14The heart of the wise seeketh instruction: and the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.
14悟りのある者の心は知識を求めるが、 愚かな者の口は愚かさを食べる。
15All the days of the poor are evil: a secure mind is like a continual feast.
15苦しむ者の日々はすべてつらいが、 心の明るい者には絶え間ない宴がある。
16Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasures without content,
16わずかな物しかなくても主を恐れるほうが、 多くの宝があって悩みを抱えるより良い。
17It is better to be invited to herbs with love, than to a fatted calf with hatred.
17愛のある所で野菜だけを食べるほうが、 憎しみのある所で肥えた子牛を食べるより良い。
18A passionate man stirreth up strifes: he that is patient appeaseth those that are stirred up.
18憤る者は争いを引き起こすが、 怒ることの遅い者は争いを静める。
19The way of the slothful is as a hedge of thorns; the way of the just is without offence.
19怠け者の道はいばらの生け垣のようだが、 正しい者の道は大路である。
20A wise son maketh a father joyful: but the foolish man despiseth his mother.
20知恵のある息子は父を喜ばせるが、 愚かな者は母を侮る。
21Folly is joy to the fool: and the wise man maketh straight his steps.
21愚かさは知恵のない者の喜びだが、 悟りのある人はまっすぐに歩む。
22Designs are brought to nothing where there is no counsel: but where there are many counsellors, they are established.
22助言がなければ計画は失敗するが、 助言者が多ければ計画は確かなものとなる。
23A man rejoiceth in the sentence of his mouth: and a word in due time is best.
23人は自分の答えによって喜びを得る。 時にかなった言葉は、なんと良いことか。
24The path of life is above for the wise, that he may decline from the lowest hell.
24命の道は知恵のある者を上へ導き、 よみに下ることから彼を遠ざける。
25The Lord will destroy the house of the proud: and will strengthen the borders of the widow.
25主は高慢な者の家を根こそぎにするが、 やもめの境界を確かなものにされる。
26Evil thoughts are an abomination to the Lord: and pure words most beautiful shall be confirmed by him.
26悪しき者の思いは主に忌み嫌われるが、 純粋な者の思いは喜ばれる。
27He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house: but he that hateth bribes shall live. By mercy and faith sins are purged away: and by the fear of the Lord every one declineth from evil.
27不正な利益をむさぼる者は自分の家を悩ませるが、 賄賂を憎む者は生きる。
28The mind of the just studieth obedience: the mouth of the wicked over floweth with evils.
28義人の心は答える前によく考えるが、 悪しき者の口は悪をあふれ出させる。
29The Lord is far from the wicked: and he will hear the prayers of the just.
29主は悪しき者から遠く離れているが、 義人の祈りを聞かれる。
30The light of the eyes rejoiceth the soul: a good name maketh the bones fat.
30目の輝きは心を喜ばせ、 良い知らせは骨を健やかにする。
31The ear that heareth the reproofs of life, shall abide in the midst of the wise.
31叱責に耳を傾ける者は命を得て、 知恵のある者たちの間に住む。
32He that rejecteth instruction, despiseth his own soul: but he that yieldeth to reproof possesseth understanding.
32矯正を拒む者は自分自身を侮るが、 叱責に耳を傾ける者は悟りを得る。
33The fear of the Lord is the lesson of wisdom: and humility goeth before glory.
33主を恐れることは知恵を教える。 誉れに先立つのはへりくだりである。
