1And Elihu went on to say:

1І вів Еліуй далїй свою річ і говорив:

2“Do you think this is just? You say, ‘I am more righteous than God.’

2Не вже ж видиться тобі се справедливим, що ти сказав: Я праведнїйший, анїж сам Бог?

3For you ask, ‘What does it profit me, and what benefit do I gain apart from sin?’

3Ти бо сказав: що за користь менї, й що прибуло б менї з того навперід, як і послї того, як би я согрішив?

4I will reply to you and to your friends as well.

4Я відкажу й самому тобі й твоїм друзям з тобою:

5Look to the heavens and see; gaze at the clouds high above you.

5Глянь лиш на небо й побач; глянь на хмарі, що над тобою.

6If you sin, what do you accomplish against Him? If you multiply your transgressions, what do you do to Him?

6Як ти грішиш, що за шкоду йому причиняєш? і хоч би ти проступки твої незнати як збільшив, то що вдїєш ти йому?

7If you are righteous, what do you give Him, or what does He receive from your hand?

7Коли ти праведен, що ж даєш йому? або що він з руки в тебе візьме?

8Your wickedness affects only a man like yourself, and your righteousness only a son of man.

8Безбожність твоя причинить шкоди тільки чоловікові, та й праведність твоя буде хосенна синові чоловічому.

9Men cry out under great oppression; they plead for relief from the arm of the mighty.

9Під силою угнїтаючих стогнуть угнетені й нарікають під рокою можних;

10But no one asks, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives us songs in the night,

10Та нїхто не говорить: Де Бог, мій сотворитель, що його й в ночі осьпівують?

11who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the air?’

11Що більш, як зьвіррє земне, нас навчає, і більш, як птаство піднебесне, врозумляє?

12There they cry out, but He does not answer, because of the pride of evil men.

12Хоч і кричать, не відказує, задля гординї злих людей.

13Surely God does not listen to empty pleas, and the Almighty does not take note of it.

13Але се неправда, будьто Бог не чує й Вседержитель не вглядає в те.

14How much less, then, when you say that you do not see Him, that your case is before Him and you must wait for Him,

14Хоч ти й сказав, що не бачиш його, та суд уже готовий у його, — жди його.

15and further, that in His anger He has not punished or taken much notice of folly!

15Але тепер, тим що гнїв Божий не навідав його, й він іще не спізнав його по всїй лютостї його,

16So Job opens his mouth in vain and multiplies words without knowledge.”

16Відчинив Йов легкодушно уста свої й розкидає нерозважно словами.
