1Luistert kinderen, naar wat vader leert; Let op, om inzicht te krijgen.
1Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend that you may know prudence.
2Ik prent u een gezonde leer in; Sla dus mijn lessen niet in de wind.
2I will give you a good gift, forsake not my law.
3Toen ik voor mijn vader nog een kind was, Een teer en enig kind onder het oog van mijn moeder,
3For I also was my father’s son, tender and as an only son in the sight of my mother:
4Gaf hij mij onderricht en zeide tot mij: Neem mijn woorden ter harte, Neem mijn wenken in acht, en leef;
4And he taught me, and said: Let thy heart receive my words, keep my commandments, and thou shalt live.
5Doe wijsheid, en doe inzicht op, Vergeet mijn woorden niet, En wijk er nimmer van af!
5Get wisdom, get prudence: forget not, neither decline from the words of my mouth.
6Verwaarloos haar niet, zij zal u behoeden, Als ge haar liefhebt, u beschermen.
6Forsake her not, and she shall keep thee: love her, and she shall preserve thee.
7Aanvang der wijsheid is: doe wijsheid op, Doe inzicht op, zoveel ge kunt;
7The beginning of wisdom, get wisdom, and with all thy possession purchase prudence.
8Zij zal u verheffen, als ge haar hooghoudt, U aanzien verlenen, als ge haar omhelst;
8Take hold on her, and she shall exalt thee: thou shalt be glorified by her, when thou shalt embrace her.
9Zij vlecht om uw hoofd een sierlijke krans, En verrijkt u met een prachtige kroon!
9She shall give to thy head increase of graces, and protect thee with a noble crown.
10Luister mijn zoon, neem mijn woorden aan, Opdat ge lange jaren moogt leven.
10Hear, O my son, and receive my words, that years of life may be multiplied to thee.
11Ik wijs u de weg van de wijsheid, Doe u de paden van het recht betreden.
11I will shew thee the way of wisdom, I will lead thee by the paths of equity:
12Gaat ge daarop, dan zal men uw tred niet belemmeren, Snelt ge daar voort, dan struikelt ge niet.
12Which when thou shalt have entered, thy steps shall not be straitened, and when thou runnest thou shalt not meet a stumblingblock.
13Houd onverzwakt vast aan de tucht, Neem haar in acht, want zij is uw leven.
13Take hold on instruction, leave it not: keep it, because it is thy life.
14Begeef u niet op de weg der bozen, Ga niet voort op het pad der zondaars;
14Be not delighted in the paths of the wicked, neither let the way of evil men please thee.
15Laat ze liggen, ga er niet overheen, Mijd ze, ga ze voorbij!
15Flee from it, pass not by it: go aside, and forsake it.
16Want ze rusten niet, of ze moeten kwaad kunnen doen, Ze gaan niet slapen, eer ze iemand hebben doen struikelen;
16For they sleep not except they have done evil: and their sleep is taken away unless they have made some to fall.
17Ze eten het brood der boosheid, En drinken de wijn der geweldenarij.
17They eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of iniquity.
18Maar de weg der deugdzamen is als het morgenlicht, Dat gaandeweg opklaart, tot het dag is geworden.
18But the path of the just, as a shining light, goeth forwards and increaseth even to perfect day.
19De weg der bozen gelijkt op een donkere nacht, Ze weten niet, waarover ze struikelen;
19The way of the wicked is darksome: they know not where they fall.
20Mijn zoon, schenk uw aandacht aan wat ik ga zeggen, Leg uw oor te luisteren naar mijn woorden;
20My son, hearken to my words, and incline thy ear to my sayings.
21Laat ze niet wijken uit uw ogen, Bewaar ze diep in uw hart;
21Let them not depart from thy eyes, keep them in the midst of thy heart:
22Want ze zijn het leven voor hem, die ze vindt, Voor heel zijn lichaam genezing.
22For they are life to those that find them, and health to all flesh.
23Bewaak dus uw hart met de uiterste zorg, Want daar ligt de oorsprong des levens.
23With all watchfulness keep thy heart, because life issueth out from it.
24Verwijder van u een onbetrouwbare mond, Houd verre van u venijnige lippen;
24Remove from thee a froward mouth, and let detracting lips be far from thee.
25Laat uw ogen vrij voor zich uitzien, Uw wimpers zich richten recht voor u uit.
25Let thy eyes look straight on, and let thy eyelids go before thy steps.
26Effen de weg voor uw voet, Geef richting aan uw wegen;
26Make straight the path for thy feet, and all thy ways shall be established.
27Wijk niet af naar rechts of naar links, Houd uw voet verre van het kwaad.
27Decline not to the right hand, nor to the left: turn away thy foot from evil. For the Lord knoweth the ways that are on the right hand: but those are perverse which are on the left hand. But he will make thy courses straight, he will bring forward thy ways in peace.
