1主はモーセに告げられた。
1And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
2「イスラエルの子らにわたしが与えるカナンの地を偵察させるため、人々を遣わしなさい。父祖の各部族から一人ずつ、その部族の指導者を遣わしなさい。」
2'Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel; of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a prince among them.'
3モーセは主の命令に従い、パランの荒野から彼らを遣わした。彼らは皆、イスラエルの子らの指導者であった。
3And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of the LORD; all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.
4彼らの名は次のとおりである。 ルベンの部族からは、ザクルの子シャムア。
4And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.
5シメオンの部族からは、ホリの子シャファト。
5Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.
6ユダの部族からは、エフネの子カレブ。
6Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
7イッサカルの部族からは、ヨセフの子イグアル。
7Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.
8エフライムの部族からは、ヌンの子ホシェア。
8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.
9ベニヤミンの部族からは、ラフの子パルティ。
9Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.
10ゼブルンの部族からは、ソディの子ガディエル。
10Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.
11ヨセフの部族、すなわちマナセの部族からは、スシの子ガディ。
11Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.
12ダンの部族からは、ゲマリの子アミエル。
12Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
13アシェルの部族からは、ミカエルの子セトル。
13Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.
14ナフタリの部族からは、ウォフシの子ナフビ。
14Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.
15ガドの部族からは、マキの子ゲウエル。
15Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16これらは、モーセがその地を偵察させるために遣わした男たちの名である。モーセはヌンの子ホシェアをヨシュアと呼んだ。
16These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
17モーセはカナンの地を偵察させるために彼らを遣わし、言った。「ここからネゲブへ上り、さらに山地へ上りなさい。
17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them: 'Get you up here into the South, and go up into the mountains;
18その地がどのようなものか、そこに住む民が強いか弱いか、少ないか多いかを見なさい。
18and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;
19彼らの住む地が良いか悪いか、町々が無防備か城壁で守られているかを見なさい。
19and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;
20その地がどのようなものか、肥えているか痩せているか、そこに木があるかないかを見なさい。勇気を出し、その地の果実をいくらか持って来なさい。」さて、その時期はぶどうの初なりの季節であった。
20and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land.' — Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes. —
21彼らは上って行き、ツィンの荒野からハマトの入口にあるレホブまで、その地を偵察した。
21So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, at the entrance to Hamath.
22彼らは南の地を通って上り、ヘブロンに来た。そこにはアナクの子らであるアヒマン、シェシャイ、タルマイがいた。（ヘブロンはエジプトのツォアンより七年前に建てられていた。）
22And they went up into the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. — Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt. —
23彼らはエシュコルの谷に来て、そこからぶどうの一房のついた枝を切り取り、二人で棒にかけてそれを担いだ。彼らはざくろといちじくもいくらか持って来た。
23And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a pole between two; they took also of the pomegranates, and of the figs. —
24イスラエルの子らがそこで切り取ったぶどうの房にちなみ、その場所はエシュコルの谷と呼ばれた。
24That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence. —
25四十日後、彼らはその地の偵察から帰って来た。
25And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.
26彼らはパランの荒野のカデシュにいるモーセとアロン、およびイスラエルの子らの全会衆のもとに戻り、全会衆に報告して、その地の果実を見せた。
26And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
27彼らはモーセに告げた。「私たちは、あなたが遣わされた地へ行きました。そこは確かに乳と蜜が流れており、これがその果実です。
27And they told him, and said: 'We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
28しかし、その地に住む民は強く、町々は城壁で囲まれて非常に大きく、さらにそこでアナクの子らを見ました。
28Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
29アマレク人は南の地に住み、ヘト人、エブス人、アモリ人は山地に住み、カナン人は海辺とヨルダン川沿いに住んでいます。」
29Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South; and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.'
30カレブはモーセの前で民を静めて言った。「すぐに上って行き、そこを占領しましょう。私たちは必ず勝てます。」
30And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said: 'We should go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.'
31しかし、彼とともに上って行った男たちは言った。「私たちはあの民に向かって上って行くことはできません。彼らは私たちよりも強いからです。」
31But the men that went up with him said: 'We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.'
32彼らは偵察した地についてイスラエルの子らの間に悪評を広め、言った。「私たちが偵察して通り巡った地は、住民を食い尽くす地です。そこで見た民は皆、並外れて大きな者たちでした。
32And they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, through which we have passed to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.
33そこでネフィリム、すなわちネフィリムの子孫であるアナクの子らを見ました。自分たちがいなごのように見え、彼らの目にもそう見えました。」
33And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.'
