1イスラエルがシティムにとどまっていたとき、民はモアブの娘たちと淫行を行い始めた。
1And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moab.
2娘たちは自分たちの神々へのいけにえに民を招き、民は食べて、その神々にひれ伏した。
2And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3イスラエルはバアル・ペオルに結びつき、主の怒りがイスラエルに向かって燃えた。
3And Israel joined himself unto the Baal of Peor; and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
4主はモーセに言われた。「民の指導者たちをすべて捕らえ、日の下で主の前につるしなさい。そうすれば、主の激しい怒りはイスラエルから去る。」
4And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto the LORD in face of the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.'
5モーセはイスラエルの裁き人たちに言った。「それぞれ、バアル・ペオルに結びついた者を殺しなさい。」
5And Moses said unto the judges of Israel: 'Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto the Baal of Peor.'
6そのとき、イスラエルの子らの一人が、モーセと全会衆の前で、一人のミディアン人の女を自分の兄弟たちのもとへ連れて来た。人々は会見の天幕の入口で泣いていた。
6And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.
7祭司アロンの子エルアザルの子ピネハスはそれを見ると、会衆の中から立ち上がり、手に槍を取った。
7And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.
8彼はイスラエルの男を追って奥の部屋に入り、男と女の腹を一突きに刺し貫いた。すると、イスラエルの子らを襲っていた疫病はやんだ。
8And he went after the man of Israel into the chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9この疫病で死んだ者は二万四千人であった。
9And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10主はモーセに告げられた。
10And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
11「祭司アロンの子エルアザルの子ピネハスは、わたしと同じ熱情を彼らの間で示し、イスラエルの子らからわたしの憤りをそらした。それゆえ、わたしは熱情によってイスラエルの子らを滅ぼし尽くさなかった。
11'Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned My wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was very jealous for My sake among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in My jealousy.
12それゆえ、こう告げなさい。『見よ、わたしは彼に平和の契約を与える。
12Wherefore say: Behold, I give unto him My covenant of peace;
13これは彼とその後の子孫に対する永遠の祭司職の契約となる。彼が神のために熱情を示し、イスラエルの子らのために贖いを行ったからである。』」
13and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.'
14ミディアン人の女とともに殺されたイスラエル人の名はサルの子ジムリで、シメオン人の父祖の家の指導者であった。
14Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites.
15殺されたミディアン人の女の名はツルの娘コズビであった。ツルはミディアンの父祖の家の一つを率いる者であった。
15And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian.
16主はモーセに告げられた。
16And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
17「ミディアン人を敵として攻め、彼らを打ちなさい。
17'Harass the Midianites, and smite them;
18彼らは策略をもってあなたがたを苦しめ、ペオルの事件と、ペオルのために疫病が起こった日に殺された、ミディアンの指導者の娘コズビの事件で、あなたがたを欺いたからである。」
18for they harass you, by their wiles wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.'
