1イスラエルの子らは旅立ち、エリコの向かい、ヨルダン川の向こうにあるモアブの平野に宿営した。
1And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.
2ツィポルの子バラクは、イスラエルがアモリ人に行ったすべてのことを見た。
2And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3モアブは、民の数が多いのを見て非常に恐れ、イスラエルの子らを前にしておびえた。
3And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many; and Moab was overcome with dread because of the children of Israel.
4モアブはミディアンの長老たちに言った。「今にこの群衆は、牛が野の草をなめ尽くすように、私たちの周囲をすべてなめ尽くすだろう。」 ツィポルの子バラクは、そのころモアブの王であった。
4And Moab said unto the elders of Midian: 'Now will this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field.' — And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time. —
5彼は、川のほとりのペトルにいるベオルの子バラムを呼ぶため、その同族の地へ使者を遣わした。「見よ、一つの民がエジプトから出て来て、地の面を覆い、私の向かいに住み着いている。
5And he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying: 'Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt; behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.
6どうか来て、私のためにこの民を呪ってほしい。彼らは私より強い。そうすれば、私は彼らを打ち、この地から追い出せるかもしれない。あなたが祝福する者は祝福され、呪う者は呪われると知っているからだ。」
6Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me; peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.'
7モアブとミディアンの長老たちは、占いの報酬を手にして出発した。彼らはバラムのもとへ来て、バラクの言葉を伝えた。
7And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spoke unto him the words of Balak.
8バラムは彼らに言った。「今夜はここに泊まりなさい。主が私に語られることを、あなたがたに知らせよう。」そこでモアブの指導者たちはバラムのもとにとどまった。
8And he said unto them: 'Lodge here this night, and I will bring you back word, as the LORD may speak unto me'; and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
9神はバラムのもとに来て言われた。「あなたと一緒にいるこの者たちはだれか。」
9And God came unto Balaam, and said: 'What men are these with thee?'
10バラムは神に答えた。「モアブの王、ツィポルの子バラクが、私にこう言ってきました。
10And Balaam said unto God: 'Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me saying:
11『見よ、エジプトから出て来た民が地の面を覆っている。今来て、私のために彼らを呪ってほしい。そうすれば、私は彼らと戦い、追い出せるかもしれない。』」
11Behold the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the face of the earth; now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.'
12神はバラムに言われた。「彼らと一緒に行ってはならない。その民を呪ってはならない。彼らは祝福されている。」
12And God said unto Balaam: 'Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.'
13朝、バラムは起きて、バラクの指導者たちに言った。「あなたがたの国へ帰りなさい。主は、私があなたがたと一緒に行くことをお許しにならない。」
13And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak: 'Get you into your land; for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.'
14モアブの指導者たちは起きてバラクのもとへ帰り、言った。「バラムは私たちと一緒に来ることを拒みました。」
14And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said: 'Balaam refuseth to come with us.'
15バラクは再び、先の者たちより数も多く、身分も高い指導者たちを遣わした。
15And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.
16彼らはバラムのもとへ来て言った。「ツィポルの子バラクはこう申します。『どうか、何ものにも妨げられず、私のもとへ来てください。
16And they came to Balaam, and said to him: 'Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor: Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me;
17私はあなたをこの上なく厚くもてなし、あなたの言うことは何でも行います。どうか来て、私のためにこの民を呪ってください。』」
17for I will promote thee unto very great honour, and whatsoever thou sayest unto me I will do; come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.'
18バラムはバラクの家来たちに答えた。「たとえバラクが、銀と金で満ちた彼の家を私に与えても、私の神、主の命令を越えて、小さなことも大きなことも行うことはできない。
18And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak: 'If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do any thing, small or great.
19それでも、あなたがたも今夜ここにとどまってください。主がさらに何を語られるか確かめましょう。」
19Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will speak unto me more.'
20夜、神はバラムのもとに来て言われた。「この者たちがあなたを呼びに来たのなら、立って一緒に行きなさい。ただし、わたしがあなたに告げることだけを行いなさい。」
20And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him: 'If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.'
21バラムは朝起きて、ろばに鞍を置き、モアブの指導者たちと出発した。
21And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
22しかし、彼が出発したので神の怒りが燃え、主の使いが敵対する者として道に立った。バラムはろばに乗り、二人の従者も一緒にいた。
22And God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of the LORD placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. — Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him. —
23ろばは、主の使いが抜き身の剣を手にして道に立っているのを見た。ろばは道をそれて畑に入ったので、バラムは道へ戻そうとして打った。
23And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
24すると、主の使いはぶどう園の間の狭い道に立った。両側には石垣があった。
24Then the angel of the LORD stood in a hollow way between the vineyards, a fence being on this side, and a fence on that side.
25ろばは主の使いを見ると、石垣に身を寄せ、バラムの足を石垣に押しつけた。バラムはまたろばを打った。
25And the ass saw the angel of the LORD, and she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall; and he smote her again.
26主の使いはさらに進み、右にも左にも曲がる余地のない狭い場所に立った。
26And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
27ろばは主の使いを見ると、バラムを乗せたまま伏した。バラムは怒りに燃え、杖でろばを打った。
27And the ass saw the angel of the LORD, and she lay down under Balaam; and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff.
28すると主がろばの口を開かれた。ろばはバラムに言った。「私が何をしたというのですか。三度も私を打つとは。」
28And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam: 'What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?'
29バラムはろばに言った。「おまえが私を愚弄したからだ。手に剣があれば、今すぐおまえを殺していた。」
29And Balaam said unto the ass: 'Because thou hast mocked me; I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee.'
30ろばはバラムに言った。「私は、あなたが今日まで一生乗ってきたろばではありませんか。これまで、あなたにこんなことをしたでしょうか。」 バラムは答えた。「いや。」
30And the ass said unto Balaam: 'Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy life long unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee?' And he said: 'Nay.'
31そのとき主はバラムの目を開かれた。彼は主の使いが抜き身の剣を手にして道に立っているのを見て、身をかがめ、顔を地につけてひれ伏した。
31Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.
32主の使いは言った。「なぜろばを三度も打ったのか。見よ、あなたの道がわたしの前でよこしまであるため、わたしは敵対する者として出て来た。
32And the angel of the LORD said unto him: 'Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is contrary unto me;
33ろばはわたしを見て、三度身をかわした。もし身をかわしていなければ、今ごろあなたを殺し、ろばを生かしていただろう。」
33and the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times; unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I had even slain thee, and saved her alive.'
34バラムは主の使いに言った。「私は罪を犯しました。あなたが道に立ちはだかっておられるとは知りませんでした。これがあなたの意に反するなら、引き返します。」
34And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD: 'I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me; now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back.'
35主の使いはバラムに言った。「この者たちと一緒に行きなさい。ただし、わたしがあなたに語る言葉だけを語りなさい。」 こうしてバラムはバラクの指導者たちと行った。
35And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam: 'Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak.' So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36バラクはバラムが来たと聞き、アルノン川の境、領土の最果てにあるモアブの町まで迎えに出た。
36And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto Ir-moab, which is on the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.
37バラクはバラムに言った。「私は何度も使者を遣わしてあなたを呼んだではないか。なぜ来なかったのか。私にはあなたを厚くもてなす力がないとでもいうのか。」
37And Balak said unto Balaam: 'Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?'
38バラムはバラクに答えた。「ご覧ください。私はあなたのもとに参りました。しかし、私に何かを自由に語る力があるでしょうか。神が私の口に置かれる言葉を、私は語ります。」
38And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Lo, I am come unto thee; have I now any power at all to speak any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.'
39バラムはバラクとともに行き、キルヤテ・フゾトに着いた。
39And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kiriath-huzoth.
40バラクは牛と羊をいけにえとしてささげ、その一部をバラムと彼に同行していた指導者たちに送った。
40And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
41朝になると、バラクはバラムを連れてバモテ・バアルに上った。そこからバラムは民の一部を見渡した。
41And it came to pass in the morning that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into Bamoth-baal, and he saw from thence the utmost part of the people.
