1主はエリコの向かい側にあるヨルダン川のほとりのモアブの平野でモーセに告げられた。
1And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying:
2「イスラエルの子らに命じ、受け継ぐ相続地から、レビ人に住むための町々を与えさせなさい。また、町々の周囲の放牧地もレビ人に与えなさい。
2'Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and open land round about the cities shall ye give unto the Levites.
3町々は彼らの住まいとなり、放牧地は家畜と財産、すべての動物のためとなる。
3And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and their open land shall be for their cattle, and for their substance, and for all their beasts.
4レビ人に与える町々の放牧地は、町の城壁から外側へ、周囲一千キュビト とする。
4And the open land about the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.
5あなたがたは町を真ん中にして、町の外側の東側に二千キュビト、南側に二千キュビト、西側に二千キュビト、北側に二千キュビトを測る。これが彼らにとって町々の放牧地となる。
5And ye shall measure without the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the open land about the cities.
6レビ人に与える町々のうち、六つを逃れの町とし、過失で人を死なせた者がそこへ逃れられるようにする。そのほかに四十二の町を与える。
6And the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which ye shall give for the manslayer to flee thither; and beside them ye shall give forty and two cities.
7あなたがたがレビ人に与えるすべての町は四十八の町となり、それらを放牧地とともに与える。
7All the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with the open land about them.
8イスラエルの子らの所有地から町々を与えるときは、大きな部族から多く、小さな部族から少なく取る。各部族は、受け継いだ相続地に応じて町々をレビ人に与える。」
8And concerning the cities which ye shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many ye shall take many, and from the few ye shall take few; each tribe according to its inheritance which it inheriteth shall give of its cities unto the Levites.'
9主はモーセに告げられた。
9And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
10「イスラエルの子らにこう告げなさい。『ヨルダン川を渡ってカナンの地に入るとき、
10'Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
11逃れの町を定め、過失で人を死なせた者がそこへ逃れられるようにしなさい。
11then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer that killeth any person through error may flee thither.
12その町々は血の復讐者から逃れる場所となる。人を死なせた者は、会衆の前に立って裁きを受けるまでは死刑に処されない。
12And the cities shall be unto you for refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation for judgment.
13あなたがたが与える町々は、あなたがたのための六つの逃れの町となる。
13And as to the cities which ye shall give, there shall be for you six cities of refuge.
14あなたがたはヨルダン川の向こう側に三つの町を与え、カナンの地に三つの町を与える。これらは逃れの町となる。
14Ye shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan; they shall be cities of refuge.
15これら六つの町は、イスラエルの子らにも、寄留者にも、彼らの間に住む者にも逃れの場所となり、過失で人を死なせた者はだれでも、そこへ逃れることができる。
15For the children of Israel, and for the stranger and for the settler among them, shall these six cities be for refuge, that every one that killeth any person through error may flee thither.
16しかし、鉄の道具で人を打って死なせたなら、その者は殺人者である。殺人者は必ず死刑に処される。
16But if he smote him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.
17人を死なせるほどの石を手にして打ち、その人が死んだなら、その者は殺人者である。殺人者は必ず死刑に処される。
17And if he smote him with a stone in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.
18人を死なせるほどの木の道具を手にして打ち、その人が死んだなら、その者は殺人者である。殺人者は必ず死刑に処される。
18Or if he smote him with a weapon of wood in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.
19血の復讐者が殺人者を死刑に処す。出会ったときに、その者を殺す。
19The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meeteth him, he shall put him to death.
20憎しみから人を突き飛ばし、あるいは待ち伏せして物を投げつけ、その人が死んだ場合、
20And if he thrust him of hatred, or hurled at him any thing, lying in wait, so that he died;
21また、敵意をもって手で打ち、その人が死んだ場合、打った者は必ず死刑に処される。その者は殺人者である。血の復讐者は出会ったときに殺人者を殺す。
21or in enmity smote him with his hand, that he died; he that smote him shall surely be put to death: he is a murderer; the avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meeteth him.
22しかし、敵意なく、突然人を突き飛ばした場合、または待ち伏せせずに物を投げつけた場合、
22But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or hurled upon him any thing without lying in wait,
23あるいは人を死なせるほどの石を、相手に気づかず落として死なせた場合で、その人の敵ではなく、危害を加えようともしていなかったなら、
23or with any stone, whereby a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, so that he died, and he was not his enemy, neither sought his harm;
24会衆はこれらの定めに従って、人を死なせた者と血の復讐者との間を裁く。
24then the congregation shall judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances;
25会衆はその者を血の復讐者の手から救い、逃げ込んだ逃れの町へ戻す。その者は、聖なる油を注がれた大祭司が死ぬまで、そこに住む。
25and the congregation shall deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, whither he was fled; and he shall dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.
26しかし、その者が逃げ込んだ逃れの町の境界を越え、
26But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, whither he fleeth;
27血の復讐者が町の境界の外で見つけて殺しても、血を流した罪はない。
27and the avenger of blood find him without the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slay the manslayer; there shall be no bloodguiltiness for him;
28その者は大祭司が死ぬまで逃れの町にとどまるべきだったからである。大祭司が死んだ後は、自分の相続地に戻ることができる。
28because he must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; but after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return into the land of his possession.
29これらは、あなたがたのすべての住まいで、代々にわたる法令となる。
29And these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
30人を殺した者を死刑に処すには、複数の証人の証言による。一人の証人だけの証言で人を死刑に処してはならない。
30Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be slain at the mouth of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify against any person that he die.
31死刑に当たる殺人者の命のために、身代金を受け取ってはならない。その者は必ず死刑に処される。
31Moreover ye shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer, that is guilty of death; but he shall surely be put to death.
32逃れの町に逃げ込んだ者のために身代金を受け取り、祭司が死ぬ前にその地へ戻って住むことを許してはならない。
32And ye shall take no ransom for him that is fled to his city of refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
33あなたがたの住む地を汚してはならない。血は地を汚すからである。地に流された血を贖うものは、それを流した者の血以外にはない。
33So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are; for blood, it polluteth the land; and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.
34あなたがたが住み、わたしも住む地を汚してはならない。主であるわたしは、イスラエルの子らの間に住む。』」
34And thou shalt not defile the land which ye inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the LORD dwell in the midst of the children of Israel.'
