1主の言葉が私に臨んだ。
1And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying:
2「人の子よ、ぶどうの木は、ほかのどの木より何が優れているのか。森の木々の中にあるぶどうの枝は、何が優れているのか。
2'Son of man, what is the vine-tree more than any tree, the vine branch which grew up among the trees of the forest?
3何かを作る材木として使えるだろうか。何かの器を掛けるために、その木から掛け釘を作れるだろうか。
3Shall wood be taken thereof to make any work? or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon?
4見よ、それは燃料として火に投げ込まれる。火がその両端を焼き尽くし、中央も焼け焦げた。それが何かの役に立つだろうか。
4Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire hath devoured both the ends of it, and the midst of it is singed; is it profitable for any work?
5見よ、それが元のままであったときにも、何の役にも立たなかった。まして、火がそれを焼き尽くし、焦がした後で、何かの役に立つだろうか。」
5Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work; how much less, when the fire hath devoured it, and it is singed, shall it yet be meet for any work?
6それゆえ、主なる神はこう言われる。「わたしが森の木々の中にあるぶどうの木を燃料として火に与えたように、同じようにエルサレムの住民を火に与える。
6Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: As the vine-tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so do I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
7わたしは彼らに顔を向ける。彼らは火を逃れても、火がなお彼らを焼き尽くす。わたしが彼らに顔を向けるとき、あなたがたは、わたしが主であることを知る。
7And I will set My face against them; out of the fire are they come forth, and the fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I set My face against them.
8彼らが不実に振る舞ったので、わたしはその地を荒れ果てさせる」と主なる神は言われる。
8And I will make the land desolate, because they have acted treacherously, saith the Lord GOD.'
