1ชาวฟีลิสเตียสู้รบกับอิสราเอล ชายอิสราเอลหนีชาวฟีลิสเตียและถูกฆ่าตายบนภูเขากิลโบอา
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
2ชาวฟีลิสเตียไล่ทันซาอูลกับลูกชาย และฆ่าโยนาธาน อาบีนาดับ และมัลคีชูอา ลูกชายทั้งสามของซาอูล
2And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
3การรบหนักหน่วงขึ้นรอบซาอูล นักธนูไล่ทันเขา เขาทุกข์ทรมานอย่างยิ่งเพราะนักธนูเหล่านั้น
3And the battle went sore against Saul, an the archers overtook him; and he was in great anguish by reason of the archers.
4ซาอูลบอกผู้ถือเครื่องอาวุธว่า “ชักดาบแทงฉันเสีย อย่าให้พวกที่ไม่ได้เข้าสุหนัตมาแทงและทำทารุณต่อฉัน” แต่ผู้ถือเครื่องอาวุธไม่ยอม เพราะกลัวมาก ซาอูลจึงหยิบดาบของตนแล้วทิ้งตัวลงบนคมดาบ
4Then said Saul to his armour-bearer: 'Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and make a mock of me.' But his armour-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.
5เมื่อผู้ถือเครื่องอาวุธเห็นว่าซาอูลตายแล้ว เขาก็ทิ้งตัวลงบนคมดาบของตนและตายพร้อมซาอูล
5And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword, and died with him.
6วันนั้นซาอูล ลูกชายทั้งสาม ผู้ถือเครื่องอาวุธ และคนของเขาทั้งหมดตายพร้อมกัน
6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armour-bearer, and all his men, that same day together.
7เมื่อชาวอิสราเอลที่อยู่อีกฟากของหุบเขาและคนที่อยู่อีกฟากแม่น้ำจอร์แดนเห็นว่าทหารอิสราเอลหนี และซาอูลกับลูกชายตายแล้ว พวกเขาก็ทิ้งเมืองหนีไป ชาวฟีลิสเตียจึงเข้ามาอยู่ในเมืองเหล่านั้น
7And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8วันรุ่งขึ้นชาวฟีลิสเตียมาปลดเอาสิ่งของจากศพคนตาย พบซาอูลกับลูกชายทั้งสามนอนตายบนภูเขากิลโบอา
8And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.
9พวกเขาตัดศีรษะซาอูล ถอดชุดเกราะของเขา แล้วส่งคนไปทั่วดินแดนฟีลิสเตียเพื่อประกาศข่าวในวิหารรูปเคารพและแก่ประชาชน
9And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry the tidings unto the house of their idols, and to the people.
10พวกเขานำชุดเกราะไปไว้ในวิหารอัชทาโรท และตรึงศพซาอูลไว้ที่กำแพงเมืองเบธชาน
10And they put his armour in the house of the Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.
11เมื่อชาวยาเบชกิเลอาดได้ยินเรื่องที่ชาวฟีลิสเตียทำกับซาอูล
11And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard concerning him that which the Philistines had done to Saul,
12ชายกล้าหาญทั้งหมดก็ลุกขึ้น เดินทางตลอดคืน ไปนำศพซาอูลกับศพลูกชายลงมาจากกำแพงเมืองเบธชาน กลับมายาเบชแล้วเผาศพเหล่านั้นที่นั่น
12all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan; and they came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.
13พวกเขานำกระดูกไปฝังใต้ต้นทามาริสก์ ในเมืองยาเบช แล้วอดอาหารเจ็ดวัน
13And they took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk-tree in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
