1ชาวคีริยาทเยอาริมจึงมารับหีบของพระยาห์เวห์ นำไปไว้ในบ้านของอาบีนาดับบนเนินเขา และแยกเอเลอาซาร์บุตรชายของเขาไว้สำหรับดูแลหีบของพระยาห์เวห์
1And the men of Kiriath-jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.
2ตั้งแต่หีบมาอยู่ที่คีริยาทเยอาริม เวลาก็ผ่านไปนานถึงยี่สิบปี ชาวอิสราเอลทั้งหมดคร่ำครวญหาพระยาห์เวห์
2And it came to pass, from the day that the ark abode in Kiriath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years; and all the house of Israel yearned after the LORD.
3ซามูเอลกล่าวกับชาวอิสราเอลทั้งหมดว่า “ถ้าพวกคุณกลับมาหาพระยาห์เวห์อย่างสุดใจ ก็จงกำจัดเทพเจ้าต่างชาติและอัชทาโรทออกจากท่ามกลางพวกคุณ ตั้งใจมุ่งหาพระยาห์เวห์และรับใช้พระองค์ผู้เดียว แล้วพระองค์จะทรงช่วยพวกคุณให้พ้นเงื้อมมือชาวฟีลิสเตีย”
3And Samuel spoke unto all the house of Israel, saying: 'If ye do return unto the LORD with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts unto the LORD, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.'
4ชาวอิสราเอลจึงกำจัดเทพบาอัลทั้งหลายและอัชทาโรท แล้วรับใช้พระยาห์เวห์ผู้เดียว
4Then the children of Israel did put away the Baalim and the Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.
5ซามูเอลกล่าวว่า “จงรวบรวมอิสราเอลทั้งหมดมาที่มิสปาห์ แล้วฉันจะอธิษฐานต่อพระยาห์เวห์เพื่อพวกคุณ”
5And Samuel said: 'Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.'
6พวกเขามารวมกันที่มิสปาห์ ตักน้ำมาเทออกต่อหน้าพระยาห์เวห์ อดอาหารในวันนั้น และสารภาพว่า “เราทำบาปต่อพระยาห์เวห์” ซามูเอลทำหน้าที่ผู้วินิจฉัยชาวอิสราเอลที่มิสปาห์
6And they gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there: 'We have sinned against the LORD.' And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.
7เมื่อชาวฟีลิสเตียได้ยินว่าชาวอิสราเอลมารวมกันที่มิสปาห์ บรรดาเจ้าเมืองของชาวฟีลิสเตียก็ยกทัพขึ้นมาสู้อิสราเอล ชาวอิสราเอลได้ข่าวก็กลัว
7And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
8พวกเขาบอกซามูเอลว่า “อย่าหยุดร้องทูลต่อพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของเราเพื่อพวกเรา ขอให้พระองค์ทรงช่วยเราให้พ้นเงื้อมมือชาวฟีลิสเตีย”
8And the children of Israel said to Samuel: 'Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that He save us out of the hand of the Philistines.'
9ซามูเอลนำลูกแกะที่ยังไม่หย่านมมาถวายเป็นเครื่องบูชาเผาทั้งตัวแด่พระยาห์เวห์ แล้วร้องทูลพระยาห์เวห์เพื่ออิสราเอล พระองค์ทรงตอบเขา
9And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt-offering unto the LORD; and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD answered him.
10ขณะซามูเอลกำลังถวายเครื่องบูชาเผาทั้งตัว ชาวฟีลิสเตียก็เข้ามาใกล้เพื่อสู้รบกับอิสราเอล แต่วันนั้นพระยาห์เวห์ทรงทำให้เกิดเสียงฟ้าร้องกึกก้องเหนือชาวฟีลิสเตียจนพวกเขาสับสนและถูกตีแตกต่อหน้าชาวอิสราเอล
10And as Samuel was offering up the burnt-offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten down before Israel.
11ชายชาวอิสราเอลออกจากมิสปาห์ ไล่ตามชาวฟีลิสเตียและโจมตีพวกเขาไปจนถึงบริเวณใต้เบธคาร์
11And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.
12แล้วซามูเอลนำก้อนหินมาตั้งไว้ระหว่างมิสปาห์กับเชน ตั้งชื่อว่าเอเบนเอเซอร์ และกล่าวว่า “พระยาห์เวห์ทรงช่วยเรามาจนถึงบัดนี้”
12Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying: 'Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.'
13ดังนั้นชาวฟีลิสเตียจึงถูกปราบและหยุดบุกรุกเขตแดนอิสราเอล พระหัตถ์ของพระยาห์เวห์ต่อต้านชาวฟีลิสเตียตลอดสมัยของซามูเอล
13So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more within the border of Israel; and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14เมืองที่ชาวฟีลิสเตียเคยยึดจากอิสราเอลก็กลับมาเป็นของอิสราเอล ตั้งแต่เอโครนไปจนถึงกัท อิสราเอลได้เขตแดนของตนคืนจากชาวฟีลิสเตีย และอิสราเอลก็อยู่อย่างสงบกับชาวอาโมไรต์
14And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the border thereof did Israel deliver out of the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15ซามูเอลทำหน้าที่ผู้วินิจฉัยอิสราเอลตลอดชีวิต
15And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16ทุกปีเขาเดินทางเป็นวงรอบไปยังเบธเอล กิลกาล และมิสปาห์ ทำหน้าที่ผู้วินิจฉัยอิสราเอลในทุกแห่งนั้น
16And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth-el, and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all those places.
17จากนั้นเขากลับมารามาห์ ซึ่งเป็นที่ตั้งบ้านของเขา และทำหน้าที่ผู้วินิจฉัยอิสราเอลที่นั่นด้วย เขาสร้างแท่นบูชาแด่พระยาห์เวห์ที่นั่น
17And his return was to Ramah, for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and he built there an altar unto the LORD.
