1พระยาห์เวห์มีถ้อยคำถึงโยนาห์ บุตรของอามิตไท ว่า
1NOW THE WORD of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying:
2“จงลุกขึ้นไปยังมหานครนีนะเวห์ และประกาศกล่าวโทษเมือง เพราะความชั่วของพวกเขามาถึงต่อหน้าเราแล้ว”
2'Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it; for their wickedness is come up before Me.'
3แต่โยนาห์ลุกขึ้นเพื่อหนีไปทาร์ชิชให้พ้นหน้าพระยาห์เวห์ เขาลงไปยอปปา พบเรือที่จะไปทาร์ชิช จึงจ่ายค่าโดยสารแล้วลงเรือ เพื่อไปทาร์ชิชกับคนเหล่านั้นให้พ้นหน้าพระยาห์เวห์
3But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish, from the presence of the LORD.
4พระยาห์เวห์ส่งลมแรงไปบนทะเล เกิดพายุใหญ่ในทะเลจนเรือแทบจะแตก
4But the LORD hurled a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
5ลูกเรือกลัว ต่างคนต่างร้องเรียกเทพเจ้าของตน แล้วโยนสินค้าลงทะเลเพื่อให้เรือเบาลง แต่โยนาห์ลงไปข้างในสุดของท้องเรือแล้ว และนอนหลับสนิทอยู่
5And the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
6กัปตันเรือมาหาเขาและพูดว่า “นี่คุณมัวแต่นอนอะไรอยู่? ลุกขึ้นร้องเรียกพระเจ้าของคุณ! บางทีพระเจ้าของคุณ อาจใส่ใจพวกเรา พวกเราจะได้ไม่พินาศ”
6So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him: 'What meanest thou that thou sleepest? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.'
7ลูกเรือพูดกันว่า “มาเถอะ พวกเราจับฉลากกัน จะได้รู้ว่าภัยร้ายที่เกิดกับพวกเรานี้เป็นเพราะใคร” พวกเขาจับฉลาก และฉลากตกที่โยนาห์
7And they said every one to his fellow: 'Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us.' So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
8พวกเขาจึงถามเขาว่า “ช่วยบอกพวกเราที ภัยร้ายที่เกิดกับพวกเรานี้เป็นเพราะใคร? คุณทำอาชีพอะไร? มาจากไหน? ประเทศของคุณคือที่ใด? คุณเป็นคนชาติไหน?”
8Then said they unto him: 'Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us: what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?'
9เขาตอบว่า “ผมเป็นชาวฮีบรู ผมยำเกรงพระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าแห่งฟ้าสวรรค์ ผู้สร้างทะเลและแผ่นดินแห้ง”
9And he said unto them: 'I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.'
10ลูกเรือกลัวยิ่งนัก จึงถามเขาว่า “คุณทำอะไรลงไป?” พวกเขารู้ว่าเขากำลังหนีให้พ้นหน้าพระยาห์เวห์ เพราะเขาบอกพวกเขาแล้ว
10Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him: 'What is this that thou hast done?' For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
11พวกเขาถามว่า “พวกเราควรทำอย่างไรกับคุณ ทะเลจึงจะสงบลง?” เพราะทะเลยิ่งปั่นป่วนรุนแรงขึ้น
11Then said they unto him: 'What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us?' for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.
12เขาตอบว่า “ยกผมขึ้นแล้วโยนลงทะเล แล้วทะเลจะสงบลง ผมรู้ว่าพายุใหญ่นี้เกิดกับพวกคุณเพราะผม”
12And he said unto them: 'Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.'
13ถึงอย่างนั้น ลูกเรือก็พยายามพายเรือกลับเข้าฝั่ง แต่ทำไม่ได้ เพราะทะเลยิ่งปั่นป่วนรุนแรงต้านพวกเขา
13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.
14พวกเขาจึงร้องทูลพระยาห์เวห์ว่า “พระยาห์เวห์ พวกเราขอวิงวอน ขอวิงวอนพระองค์ อย่าให้พวกเราต้องตายเพราะเอาชีวิตชายคนนี้ อย่าให้พวกเรามีความผิดเพราะทำให้เลือดผู้บริสุทธิ์ไหล เพราะพระยาห์เวห์ พระองค์ทำตามที่พระองค์พอใจแล้ว”
14Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said: 'We beseech Thee, O LORD, we beseech Thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for Thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased Thee.'
15พวกเขายกโยนาห์ขึ้นแล้วโยนลงทะเล ทะเลก็หยุดปั่นป่วน
15So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.
16ลูกเรือยำเกรงพระยาห์เวห์อย่างยิ่ง ถวายเครื่องบูชาแด่พระยาห์เวห์และกล่าวคำปฏิญาณ
16Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.
17พระยาห์เวห์จัดให้มีปลาตัวใหญ่มหึมามากลืนโยนาห์ โยนาห์อยู่ในท้องปลาสามวันสามคืน
17(2-1) And the LORD prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
