1หีบของพระยาห์เวห์อยู่ในดินแดนชาวฟีลิสเตียเจ็ดเดือน
1And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.
2ชาวฟีลิสเตียเรียกพวกปุโรหิตและผู้ทำนายมาถามว่า “เราจะทำอย่างไรกับหีบของพระยาห์เวห์? บอกเราทีว่าจะส่งหีบกลับไปที่เดิมอย่างไร”
2And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying: 'What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? declare unto us wherewith we shall send it to its place.'
3พวกเขาตอบว่า “ถ้าจะส่งหีบของพระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอลกลับไป อย่าส่งไปเปล่า ๆ ต้องถวายเครื่องบูชาชดใช้ความผิดคืนแด่พระองค์ด้วย แล้วพวกท่านจะหาย และจะรู้ว่าทำไมพระองค์ยังไม่ทรงถอนพระหัตถ์จากพวกท่าน”
3And they said: 'If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return Him a guilt-offering; then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why His hand is not removed from you.'
4ชาวฟีลิสเตียถามว่า “เราควรส่งอะไรไปเป็นเครื่องบูชาชดใช้ความผิด?” พวกเขาตอบว่า “เนื้องอกทองคำห้าชิ้นกับหนูทองคำห้าตัว ตามจำนวนเจ้าเมืองฟีลิสเตียทั้งห้า เพราะภัยพิบัติเดียวกันเกิดแก่พวกท่านทุกคนรวมทั้งเจ้าเมืองด้วย
4Then said they: 'What shall be the guilt-offering which we shall return to Him?' And they said: 'Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
5จงทำรูปเนื้องอกของพวกท่านกับรูปหนูที่ทำลายแผ่นดิน และถวายเกียรติแด่พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอล บางทีพระองค์จะทรงถอนพระหัตถ์จากพวกท่าน เทพเจ้าของพวกท่าน และแผ่นดินของพวกท่าน
5Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel; peradventure He will lighten His hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.
6ทำไมพวกท่านจึงจะมีใจแข็งกระด้างเหมือนชาวอียิปต์กับฟาโรห์? เมื่อพระองค์ทรงแสดงฤทธิ์เดชท่ามกลางพวกเขาแล้ว พวกเขาก็ปล่อยประชาชนให้เดินทางออกไปไม่ใช่หรือ?
6Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when He had wrought among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

7Now therefore take and prepare you a new cart, and two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them.
8นำหีบของพระยาห์เวห์วางบนเกวียน ส่วนของทองคำที่ส่งคืนเป็นเครื่องบูชาชดใช้ความผิด จงใส่กล่องแล้ววางไว้ข้างหีบของพระองค์ แล้วปล่อยเกวียนไป
8And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return Him for a guilt-offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
9คอยดู ถ้าแม่วัวเดินขึ้นไปตามทางสู่ชายแดนของเบธเชเมช พระองค์เองก็ทรงทำให้เราเดือดร้อนหนักครั้งนี้ แต่ถ้าไม่ไป เราก็จะรู้ว่าไม่ใช่พระหัตถ์ของพระองค์ที่ลงโทษเรา สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเป็นเพียงเรื่องบังเอิญ”
9And see, if it goeth up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, then He hath done us this great evil; but if not, then we shall know that it is not His hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.'

10And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.

11And they put the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.
12แม่วัวเดินตรงไปตามถนนสายเบธเชเมช ส่งเสียงร้องไปตลอดทาง ไม่เลี้ยวซ้ายหรือขวา เจ้าเมืองทั้งห้าของชาวฟีลิสเตียเดินตามไปจนถึงชายแดนของเบธเชเมช
12And the kine took the straight way by the way to Beth-shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.
13ตอนนั้นชาวเบธเชเมชกำลังเก็บเกี่ยวข้าวสาลีในหุบเขา พวกเขาเงยหน้าขึ้นเห็นหีบและดีใจ
13And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
14เกวียนเข้ามาในทุ่งของโยชูวาชาวเบธเชเมชและหยุดข้างก้อนหินใหญ่ พวกเขาผ่าไม้เกวียน แล้วนำแม่วัวมาถวายเป็นเครื่องบูชาเผาทั้งตัวแด่พระยาห์เวห์
14And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone; and they cleaved the wood of the cart, and offered up the kine for a burnt-offering unto the LORD.
15ชาวเลวียกหีบของพระยาห์เวห์และกล่องที่บรรจุของทองคำลงจากเกวียน วางไว้บนก้อนหินใหญ่ วันเดียวกันนั้นชาวเบธเชเมชถวายเครื่องบูชาเผาทั้งตัวและเครื่องบูชาอื่น ๆ แด่พระยาห์เวห์
15And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone; and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.
16เมื่อเจ้าเมืองฟีลิสเตียทั้งห้าเห็นเหตุการณ์แล้ว ก็กลับเอโครนในวันเดียวกัน
16And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.
17เนื้องอกทองคำที่ชาวฟีลิสเตียส่งคืนเป็นเครื่องบูชาชดใช้ความผิดแด่พระยาห์เวห์มีดังนี้ สำหรับอัชโดดหนึ่งชิ้น กาซาหนึ่งชิ้น อัชเคโลนหนึ่งชิ้น กัทหนึ่งชิ้น และเอโครนหนึ่งชิ้น
17And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a guilt-offering unto the LORD: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;
18ส่วนจำนวนหนูทองคำเท่ากับจำนวนเมืองทั้งหมดของชาวฟีลิสเตียที่ขึ้นกับเจ้าเมืองทั้งห้า ทั้งเมืองที่มีกำแพงและหมู่บ้านในชนบท เรื่อยไปจนถึงก้อนหินใหญ่ที่พวกเขาวางหีบของพระยาห์เวห์ไว้ ก้อนหินนั้นยังอยู่ในทุ่งของโยชูวาชาวเบธเชเมชจนถึงทุกวันนี้
18and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even unto Abel by the great stone, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD, which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite.
19พระองค์ทรงลงโทษชาวเบธเชเมชเพราะพวกเขามองเข้าไปในหีบของพระยาห์เวห์ ทรงฆ่าพวกเขาห้าหมื่นเจ็ดสิบคน ประชาชนพากันไว้ทุกข์ เพราะพระยาห์เวห์ทรงฆ่าคนจำนวนมาก
19And He smote of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had gazed upon the ark of the LORD, even He smote of the people seventy men, and fifty thousand men; and the people mourned, because the LORD had smitten the people with a great slaughter.
20ชาวเบธเชเมชกล่าวว่า “ใครจะยืนอยู่ต่อหน้าพระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าผู้บริสุทธิ์องค์นี้ได้? แล้วพระองค์จะจากพวกเราขึ้นไปหาใคร?”
20And the men of Beth-shemesh said: 'Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God? and to whom shall it go up from us?'
21พวกเขาจึงส่งคนไปบอกชาวคีริยาทเยอาริมว่า “ชาวฟีลิสเตียส่งหีบของพระยาห์เวห์กลับมาแล้ว ลงมารับหีบขึ้นไปไว้กับพวกท่านเถิด”
21And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying: 'The Philistines have brought back the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.'
