1พระยาห์เวห์ตรัสกับซามูเอลว่า “เจ้าจะไว้ทุกข์ให้ซาอูลอีกนานเท่าไร ในเมื่อเราปฏิเสธไม่ให้เขาเป็นกษัตริย์เหนืออิสราเอลแล้ว? จงเติมน้ำมันลงในเขาสัตว์แล้วออกเดินทาง เราจะส่งเจ้าไปหาเจสซีชาวเบธเลเฮม เพราะเราเลือกบุตรคนหนึ่งของเขาไว้เป็นกษัตริย์ของเรา”
1And the LORD said unto Samuel: 'How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided Me a king among his sons.'
2ซามูเอลทูลว่า “ข้าพเจ้าจะไปได้อย่างไร? ถ้าซาอูลรู้ เขาจะฆ่าข้าพเจ้า” พระยาห์เวห์ตรัสว่า “จงพาลูกวัวตัวเมียไปด้วย แล้วบอกว่า ‘ข้ามาถวายเครื่องบูชาแด่พระยาห์เวห์’
2And Samuel said: 'How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me.' And the LORD said: 'Take a heifer with thee, and say: I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.
3เชิญเจสซีมาร่วมถวายเครื่องบูชา แล้วเราจะบอกว่าเจ้าต้องทำอะไร จงเจิมคนที่เราระบุให้เจ้า”
3And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will tell thee what thou shalt do; and thou shalt anoint unto Me him whom I name unto thee.'
4ซามูเอลทำตามพระดำรัสของพระยาห์เวห์และมาถึงเบธเลเฮม ผู้อาวุโสในเมืองออกมาต้อนรับด้วยความหวาดกลัว ถามว่า “ท่านมาอย่างสันติหรือ?”
4And Samuel did that which the LORD spoke, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said: 'Comest thou peaceably?'
5เขาตอบว่า “มาอย่างสันติ ฉันมาถวายเครื่องบูชาแด่พระยาห์เวห์ จงชำระตัวให้บริสุทธิ์แล้วมาร่วมถวายเครื่องบูชากับฉัน” ซามูเอลชำระเจสซีกับลูกชายของเขาให้บริสุทธิ์ และเชิญมาร่วมถวายเครื่องบูชา
5And he said: 'Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.' And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6เมื่อพวกเขามาถึง ซามูเอลมองเอลีอับแล้วคิดว่า “ผู้ที่พระยาห์เวห์ทรงเจิมคงยืนอยู่ตรงหน้าพระองค์แน่”
6And it came to pass, when they were come, that he beheld Eliab, and said: 'Surely the LORD'S anointed is before Him.'
7แต่พระยาห์เวห์ตรัสกับซามูเอลว่า “อย่าดูหน้าตาหรือความสูงของเขา เพราะเราปฏิเสธเขาแล้ว เราไม่มองอย่างที่มนุษย์มอง มนุษย์ดูรูปลักษณ์ภายนอก แต่พระยาห์เวห์ทรงดูจิตใจ”
7But the LORD said unto Samuel: 'Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him; for it is not as man seeth: for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.'
8เจสซีจึงเรียกอาบีนาดับให้เดินผ่านซามูเอล ซามูเอลกล่าวว่า “พระยาห์เวห์ไม่ได้เลือกคนนี้เหมือนกัน”
8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said: 'Neither hath the LORD chosen this.'
9เจสซีให้ชัมมาห์เดินผ่านมา ซามูเอลกล่าวว่า “พระยาห์เวห์ก็ไม่ได้เลือกคนนี้”
9Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said: 'Neither hath the LORD chosen this.'
10เจสซีให้ลูกชายเจ็ดคนเดินผ่านซามูเอล แต่ซามูเอลบอกเขาว่า “พระยาห์เวห์ไม่ได้เลือกคนเหล่านี้”
10And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse: 'The LORD hath not chosen these.'
11ซามูเอลถามเจสซีว่า “ลูกของท่านมีแค่นี้หรือ?” เจสซีตอบว่า “ยังเหลือคนสุดท้อง เขากำลังเลี้ยงแกะอยู่” ซามูเอลบอกว่า “ส่งคนไปตามมา เราจะไม่นั่งลงจนกว่าเขาจะมาถึง”
11And Samuel said unto Jesse: 'Are here all thy children?' And he said: 'There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep.' And Samuel said unto Jesse: 'Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither.'
12เจสซีจึงส่งคนไปรับเขามา เด็กหนุ่มมีผิวอมแดง หน้าตาดีและรูปร่างงดงาม พระยาห์เวห์ตรัสว่า “ลุกขึ้นเจิมเขาเถอะ คนนี้แหละ”
12And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of beautiful eyes, and goodly to look upon. And the LORD said: 'Arise, anoint him; for this is he.'
13ซามูเอลนำเขาสัตว์ใส่น้ำมันมาเจิมเขาท่ามกลางพี่น้อง ตั้งแต่วันนั้นพระวิญญาณของพระยาห์เวห์เสด็จลงมาเหนือดาวิดอย่างทรงพลัง แล้วซามูเอลก็กลับรามาห์
13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren; and the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14แต่พระวิญญาณของพระยาห์เวห์จากซาอูลไป และวิญญาณชั่วจากพระยาห์เวห์มารบกวนเขา
14Now the spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrified him.
15คนรับใช้ของซาอูลกล่าวว่า “วิญญาณชั่วจากพระเจ้ากำลังรบกวนท่าน
15And Saul's servants said unto him: 'Behold now, an evil spirit from God terrifieth thee.
16ขอท่านสั่งคนรับใช้ที่อยู่ต่อหน้าท่านให้หาคนเล่นพิณเก่ง ๆ เมื่อวิญญาณชั่วจากพระเจ้ามาถึงท่าน เขาจะบรรเลง แล้วท่านจะดีขึ้น”
16Let our lord now command thy servants, that are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp; and it shall be, when the evil spirit from God cometh upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.'
17ซาอูลบอกคนรับใช้ว่า “หาคนเล่นพิณเก่ง ๆ มาให้ฉัน”
17And Saul said unto his servants: 'Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.'
18ชายหนุ่มคนหนึ่งกล่าวว่า “ผมเคยเห็นลูกชายคนหนึ่งของเจสซีชาวเบธเลเฮม เขาเล่นพิณเก่ง เป็นชายกล้าหาญมีฝีมือ เป็นนักรบ พูดจารอบคอบ หน้าตาดี และพระยาห์เวห์ทรงอยู่กับเขา”
18Then answered one of the young men, and said: 'Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valour, and a man of war, and prudent in affairs, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.'
19ซาอูลจึงส่งคนไปบอกเจสซีว่า “ส่งดาวิดลูกชายของท่านที่เลี้ยงแกะอยู่มาหาฉัน”
19Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said: 'Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.'
20เจสซีเตรียมลาที่บรรทุกขนมปัง พร้อมเหล้าองุ่นหนึ่งภาชนะและลูกแพะหนึ่งตัว แล้วให้ดาวิดลูกชายของเขานำไปถวายซาอูล
20And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
21ดาวิดมาหาซาอูลและรับใช้ต่อหน้าเขา ซาอูลรักดาวิดมาก และดาวิดก็เป็นผู้ถือเครื่องอาวุธให้ซาอูล
21And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly; and he became his armour-bearer.
22ซาอูลส่งข่าวถึงเจสซีว่า “ขอให้ดาวิดอยู่รับใช้ฉัน เพราะฉันพอใจเขา”
22And Saul sent to Jesse, saying: 'Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.'
23เมื่อวิญญาณจากพระเจ้ามาถึงซาอูล ดาวิดจะหยิบพิณมาบรรเลง ซาอูลก็รู้สึกสดชื่นและดีขึ้น วิญญาณชั่วก็จากเขาไป
23And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand; so Saul found relief, and it was well with him, and the evil spirit departed from him.
