1In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
1ในเวลานั้น ยอห์นผู้ทำพิธีบัพติศมามาประกาศในถิ่นทุรกันดารแห่งแคว้นยูเดีย โดยกล่าวว่า
2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
2“จงกลับใจ เพราะอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์ใกล้เข้ามาแล้ว!”
3For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
3เพราะยอห์นคือผู้ที่อิสยาห์ผู้เผยพระวจนะกล่าวถึงว่า “มีเสียงของผู้หนึ่งร้องในถิ่นทุรกันดารว่า ‘จงเตรียมทางขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า จงทำทางของพระองค์ให้ตรง!’”
4And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
4ยอห์นเองสวมเสื้อขนอูฐ คาดเข็มขัดหนังที่เอว อาหารของเขาคือตั๊กแตนกับน้ำผึ้งป่า
5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
5แล้วผู้คนจากเยรูซาเล็ม จากทั่วแคว้นยูเดีย และจากทั่วบริเวณรอบแม่น้ำจอร์แดน ก็พากันออกไปหาเขา
6And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
6พวกเขารับบัพติศมาจากยอห์นในแม่น้ำจอร์แดน พร้อมกับสารภาพบาปของตน
7¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
7แต่เมื่อยอห์นเห็นพวกฟาริสีและพวกสะดูสีจำนวนมากมาเพื่อรับบัพติศมาจากเขา เขากล่าวกับพวกเขาว่า “พวกลูกงูพิษ! ใครเตือนพวกคุณให้หนีจากความโกรธเกรี้ยวที่กำลังจะมาถึง?
8Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
8ดังนั้น จงออกผลที่สมกับการกลับใจ!
9And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
9อย่าคิดในใจว่า ‘พวกเรามีอับราฮัมเป็นบิดา’ เพราะข้าพเจ้าบอกพวกคุณว่า พระเจ้าสามารถทำให้ลูกหลานเกิดขึ้นแก่อับราฮัมจากก้อนหินเหล่านี้ได้
10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10ขวานวางอยู่ที่โคนต้นไม้แล้ว ดังนั้น ต้นไม้ทุกต้นที่ไม่เกิดผลดี ก็ถูกโค่นและโยนลงในไฟ
11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
11“ส่วนข้าพเจ้าให้พวกคุณรับบัพติศมาในน้ำเพื่อการกลับใจ แต่ผู้ที่มาภายหลังข้าพเจ้ามีอำนาจยิ่งกว่าข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าไม่คู่ควรแม้แต่จะถือรองเท้าแตะของเขา เขาจะให้พวกคุณรับบัพติศมาในพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์
12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

13¶ Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
13แล้วพระเยซูมาจากแคว้นกาลิลีถึงจอร์แดน เพื่อมาหายอห์นและรับบัพติศมาจากเขา
14But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
14แต่ยอห์นพยายามห้ามพระองค์ โดยกล่าวว่า “ข้าพเจ้าต่างหากที่จำเป็นต้องรับบัพติศมาจากท่าน แล้วท่านกลับมาหาข้าพเจ้าหรือ?”
15And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
15แต่พระเยซูตอบเขาว่า “ยอมให้เป็นอย่างนี้ก่อน เพราะนี่เป็นวิธีที่เหมาะสมสำหรับพวกเราที่จะทำให้ความชอบธรรมทุกประการสำเร็จครบถ้วน” แล้วยอห์นก็ยอมให้พระองค์
16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
16เมื่อพระเยซูรับบัพติศมาแล้ว พระองค์ขึ้นจากน้ำทันที แล้วสวรรค์ก็เปิดออกแก่พระองค์ พระองค์เห็นพระวิญญาณของพระเจ้าลงมาเหมือนนกพิราบ และมาอยู่บนพระองค์
17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
17แล้วมีเสียงจากสวรรค์กล่าวว่า “นี่คือบุตรที่รักของเรา เราพอใจในเขาอย่างยิ่ง”
