1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
1たとえ私が人の言葉や御使いたちの言葉で語っても、愛がないなら、鳴り響く銅鑼や、打ち鳴らすシンバルと同じです。
2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
2たとえ私に預言の賜物があり、すべての奥義とあらゆる知識を知り、山を移すほどの信仰があっても、愛がないなら、私は無に等しいのです。
3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor , and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
3たとえ私が持ち物をすべて貧しい人々に分け与え、自分の体を焼かれるために差し出しても、愛がないなら、私には何の益もありません。
4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
4愛は忍耐強く、親切です。愛はねたまず、自慢せず、思い上がりません。
5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
5礼を失することをせず、自分の利益を求めず、怒りに駆られず、受けた悪を数え上げません。
6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
6不義を喜ばず、真理と共に喜びます。
7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
7すべてを忍び、すべてを信じ、すべてを望み、すべてを耐え抜きます。
8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
8愛は決して絶えることがありません。しかし、預言は廃れ、さまざまな言語はやみ、知識は廃れます。
9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
9われわれが知っていることは一部分であり、預言することも一部分だからです。
10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
10しかし、完全なものが来る時、部分的なものは廃れます。
11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
11私が子どもだった時は、子どものように語り、子どものように感じ、子どものように考えていました。しかし、大人になった今は、子どもらしいことを捨てました。
12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
12今、われわれは鏡にぼんやりと映るものを見ていますが、その時には顔と顔を合わせて見ます。今、私が知っているのは一部分ですが、その時には、私が完全に知られているのと同じように、完全に知ることになります。
13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
13こうして今、信仰と希望と愛、この三つが残ります。その中で最も大いなるものは愛です。
