1And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said: 'I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.'
1人はその妻エバを知った。彼女は身ごもり、カインを産んで言った。「私は主によって一人の男を得た。」
2And again she bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
2彼女はまた、カインの弟アベルを産んだ。アベルは羊を飼う者となり、カインは土を耕す者となった。
3And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
3時が経って、カインは地の産物から主へのささげ物を持って来た。
4And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering;
4アベルもまた、自分の羊の初子の中から、その肥えたものを持って来た。主はアベルとそのささげ物に目を留められたが、
5but unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
5カインとそのささげ物には目を留められなかった。カインは非常に怒り、顔を伏せた。
6And the LORD said unto Cain: 'Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
6主はカインに言われた。「なぜあなたは怒っているのか。なぜ顔を伏せているのか。
7If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee is its desire, but thou mayest rule over it.'
7もし正しいことをするなら、顔を上げられるではないか。正しいことをしないなら、罪が戸口で待ち伏せている。罪はあなたを慕い求める。だが、あなたはそれを治めなければならない。」
8And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
8カインは弟アベルに言った。「野に行こう。」彼らが野にいたとき、カインは弟アベルに立ち向かい、彼を殺した。
9And the LORD said unto Cain: 'Where is Abel thy brother?' And he said: 'I know not; am I my brother's keeper?'
9主はカインに言われた。「あなたの弟アベルはどこにいるのか。」 彼は言った。「知りません。私は弟の番人でしょうか。」
10And He said: 'What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto Me from the ground.
10主は言われた。「あなたは何をしたのか。聞け。あなたの弟の血が、地からわたしに叫んでいる。
11And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand.
11今、あなたは地から呪われる。地はその口を開けて、あなたの手から弟の血を受けた。
12When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.'
12今後、あなたが地を耕しても、地はもはやその力をあなたに与えない。あなたは地上をさまよい歩く逃亡者となる。」
13And Cain said unto the LORD: 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.
13カインは主に言った。「私の罰は重すぎて、担いきれません。
14Behold, Thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the land; and from Thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.'
14見よ、あなたは今日、私をこの地の表から追い出されました。私はあなたの御前から隠され、地上をさまよい歩く逃亡者となります。私を見つける者は誰でも私を殺すでしょう。」
15And the LORD said unto him: 'Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.' And the LORD set a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.
15主は彼に言われた。「それゆえ、カインを殺す者は誰でも、七倍の復讐を受ける。」主はカインに一つのしるしを付けられ、彼を見つける者が誰も彼を打ち殺すことのないようにされた。
16And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
16カインは主の前から去り、エデンの東、ノドの地に住んだ。
17And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch; and he builded a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch.
17カインはその妻を知った。彼女は身ごもり、エノクを産んだ。カインは町を建て、その町を息子の名にちなんでエノクと名付けた。
18And unto Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methushael; and Methushael begot Lamech.
18エノクにはイラドが生まれた。イラドはメフヤエルの父となり、メフヤエルはメトシャエルの父となり、メトシャエルはレメクの父となった。
19And Lamech took unto him two wives; the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
19レメクは二人の妻をめとった。一人の名はアダ、もう一人の名はチラであった。
20And Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of such as dwell in tents and have cattle.
20アダはヤバルを産んだ。彼は天幕に住む者たち、また家畜を飼う者たちの父となった。
21And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.
21彼の弟の名はユバルであった。彼は竪琴と笛を奏でるすべての者の父となった。
22And Zillah, she also bore Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
22チラもまた、トバル・カインを産んだ。彼は青銅と鉄のあらゆる刃物を鍛える者であった。トバル・カインの妹はナアマであった。
23And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech; for I have slain a man for wounding me, and a young man for bruising me;
23レメクは妻たちに言った。 「アダとチラよ、私の声を聞け。 レメクの妻たちよ、私の言葉に耳を傾けよ。 私は、私に傷を負わせた男を殺した。 私を打った若者を殺した。
24If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
24カインのための復讐が七倍なら、 レメクのためには七十七倍だ。」
25And Adam knew his wife again; and she bore a son, and called his name Seth: 'for God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.'
25アダムは再びその妻を知った。彼女は男の子を産み、その子をセツと名付けて言った。「カインがアベルを殺したので、神がアベルに代わる別の子を授けてくださった。」
26And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh; then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
26セツにもまた男の子が生まれ、彼はその子をエノスと名付けた。その頃、人々は主の御名を呼び求め始めた。
