1AND MOAB rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.
1アハブの死後、モアブはイスラエルに背いた。
2And Ahaziah fell down through the lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick; and he sent messengers, and said unto them: 'Go, inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this sickness.'
2アハズヤはサマリアにある屋上の部屋の格子から落ち、病に伏した。そこで使者たちを遣わし、「行って、エクロンの神バアル・ゼブブに、この病から回復するかどうかを伺え」と命じた。
3But an angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite: 'Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them: Is it because there is no God in Israel, that ye go to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron?
3しかし主 の使いはティシュベ人エリヤに言った。「立って、サマリアの王の使者たちを迎えに行き、こう告げよ。『あなたがたがエクロンの神バアル・ゼブブに伺いを立てに行くのは、イスラエルに神 がいないからなのか。
4Now therefore thus saith the LORD: Thou shalt not come down from the bed whither thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.' And Elijah departed.
4それゆえ、主はこう言われる。「あなたは上ったその寝台から下りることなく、必ず死ぬ。」』」エリヤは立ち去った。
5And the messengers returned unto him, and he said unto them: 'Why is it that ye are returned?'
5使者たちが彼のもとに帰って来たので、彼は彼らに「なぜ帰って来たのか」と言った。
6And they said unto him: 'There came up a man to meet us, and said unto us: Go, return unto the king that sent you, and say unto him: Thus saith the LORD: Is it because there is no God in Israel, that thou sendest to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from the bed whither thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.'
6彼らは答えた。「一人の男が迎えに来て、こう言いました。『あなたがたを遣わした王のもとへ帰り、こう告げよ。「主はこう言われる。『あなたがエクロンの神バアル・ゼブブに伺いを立てるため使者を遣わすのは、イスラエルに神がいないからなのか。それゆえ、あなたは上ったその寝台から下りることなく、必ず死ぬ。』」』」
7And he said unto them: 'What manner of man was he that came up to meet you, and told you these words?'
7彼は彼らに言った。「あなたがたを迎えに上って来て、これらの言葉を語ったのは、どのような男だったのか。」
8And they answered him: 'He was a hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins.' And he said: 'It is Elijah the Tishbite.'
8彼らは彼に答えた。「毛深い男で、腰に革の帯を締めていました。」 彼は言った。「それはティシュベ人エリヤだ。」
9Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him; and, behold, he sat on the top of the hill. And he spoke unto him: 'O man of God, the king hath said: Come down.'
9そこで王は、五十人隊の長とその五十人をエリヤのもとに遣わした。隊長が上って行くと、なんとエリヤは丘の頂に座っていた。 隊長は言った。「神の人よ、王が『下りて来い』と命じておられる。」
10And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty: 'If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty.' And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
10エリヤは五十人の長に答えた。「もしわたしが神の人であるなら、天から火が下り、あなたとあなたの五十人を食い尽くすように！」すると天から火が下り、彼とその五十人を食い尽くした。
11And again he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him: 'O man of God, thus hath the king said: Come down quickly.'
11王は再び、別の五十人の長と、その五十人の部下をエリヤのもとに遣わした。その長はエリヤに言った。「神の人よ、王はこう言っておられる。『急いで下って来い！』」
12And Elijah answered and said unto them: 'If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty.' And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
12エリヤは彼らに答えた。「もしわたしが神の人であるなら、天から火が下り、あなたとあなたの五十人を食い尽くすように！」すると神の火が天から下り、彼とその五十人を食い尽くした。
13And again he sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him: 'O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
13王はさらに、三人目の五十人隊の長とその五十人を遣わした。三人目の隊長は上って行き、エリヤの前にひざまずいて懇願した。「神の人よ、どうか、わたしの命と、この五十人のしもべたちの命を大切にしてください。
14Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and consumed the two former captains of fifty with their fifties; but now let my life be precious in thy sight'
14ご覧ください。天から火が下り、先の二人の五十人隊の長とその部下たちを焼き尽くしました。どうか今、わたしの命を大切にしてください。」
15And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah: 'Go down with him; be not afraid of him.' And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.
15主の使いはエリヤに言った。「彼と一緒に下って行きなさい。彼を恐れてはならない。」そこで彼は立ち上がり、彼と一緒に王のところへ下って行った。
16And he said unto him: 'Thus saith the LORD: Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron, is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of His word? therefore thou shalt not come down from the bed whether thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.'
16エリヤは王に言った。「主はこう言われる。『あなたがエクロンの神バアル・ゼブブに伺いを立てるため使者を遣わしたのは、イスラエルには御言葉を伺うべき神がいないからなのか。それゆえ、あなたは上ったその寝台から下りることなく、必ず死ぬ。』」
17So he died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram began to reign in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.
17こうして、エリヤが語った主の言葉のとおりに、彼は死んだ。彼には息子がいなかったので、ユダの王ヨシャファテの息子エホラムの第二年に、エホラムが代わって王となった。
18Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
18アハズヤが行ったその他の事績は、イスラエルの王たちの年代記の書に記されているではないか。
