1And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moab.
1อิสราเอลพักอยู่ที่ชิททิม ประชาชนเริ่มประพฤติผิดทางเพศกับหญิงชาวโมอับ
2And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
2เพราะหญิงเหล่านั้นเชิญประชาชนไปร่วมพิธีถวายเครื่องบูชาแด่พระต่าง ๆ ของตน ประชาชนกินอาหารและกราบไหว้พระเหล่านั้น
3And Israel joined himself unto the Baal of Peor; and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
3อิสราเอลผูกพันตนกับบาอัลแห่งเปโอร์ พระยาห์เวห์จึงทรงโกรธอิสราเอลจัด
4And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto the LORD in face of the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.'
4พระยาห์เวห์ตรัสกับโมเสสว่า “จงนำบรรดาหัวหน้าของประชาชนมาแขวนประจานต่อหน้าพระยาห์เวห์กลางแจ้ง เพื่อให้ความโกรธอันรุนแรงของพระยาห์เวห์หันไปจากอิสราเอล”
5And Moses said unto the judges of Israel: 'Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto the Baal of Peor.'
5โมเสสจึงพูดกับบรรดาผู้วินิจฉัยของอิสราเอลว่า “พวกท่านแต่ละคนจงฆ่าคนของตนที่ผูกพันตนกับบาอัลแห่งเปโอร์”
6And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.
6ดูสิ ชายอิสราเอลคนหนึ่งพาหญิงชาวมีเดียนเข้ามาในหมู่พี่น้องของตนต่อหน้าโมเสสและชุมนุมชนชาวอิสราเอลทั้งหมด ขณะที่พวกเขากำลังร้องไห้อยู่ตรงทางเข้าเต็นท์นัดพบ
7And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.
7เมื่อฟีเนหัสบุตรเอเลอาซาร์ บุตรอาโรนปุโรหิตเห็นเหตุการณ์นั้น เขาก็ลุกออกจากกลางชุมนุมชนและถือหอกไว้ในมือ
8And he went after the man of Israel into the chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
8เขาตามชายอิสราเอลเข้าไปในกระโจม แล้วแทงทั้งสองคนทะลุ คือแทงชายอิสราเอลและแทงทะลุลำตัวหญิงคนนั้น ภัยพิบัติในหมู่ชาวอิสราเอลจึงหยุดลง
9And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.
9ผู้ที่ตายด้วยภัยพิบัติมีจำนวน 24,000 คน
10And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
10พระยาห์เวห์ตรัสกับโมเสสว่า
11'Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned My wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was very jealous for My sake among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in My jealousy.
11“ฟีเนหัสบุตรเอเลอาซาร์ บุตรอาโรนปุโรหิต ได้ทำให้ความโกรธของเราหันไปจากชาวอิสราเอล เพราะเขาหวงแหนเกียรติของเราท่ามกลางพวกเขาอย่างที่เราหวงแหน เราจึงไม่ได้ทำลายชาวอิสราเอลด้วยความหวงแหนนั้น
12Wherefore say: Behold, I give unto him My covenant of peace;
12ดังนั้นจงประกาศว่า ‘ดูสิ เรามอบพันธสัญญาแห่งสันติสุขของเราให้เขา
13and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.'
13พันธสัญญานี้จะเป็นพันธสัญญาแห่งตำแหน่งปุโรหิตถาวรสำหรับเขาและลูกหลานของเขาหลังจากเขา เพราะเขาหวงแหนเกียรติของพระเจ้าของเขาและทำพิธีลบมลทินบาปให้ชาวอิสราเอล’”
14Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites.
14ชายอิสราเอลที่ถูกฆ่าพร้อมกับหญิงชาวมีเดียนชื่อศิมรี เป็นลูกชายของสาลู และเป็นผู้นำวงศ์วานฝ่ายบิดาในเผ่าสิเมโอน
15And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian.
15หญิงชาวมีเดียนที่ถูกฆ่าชื่อโคสบี เป็นลูกสาวของศูร์ ซึ่งเป็นหัวหน้าวงศ์วานฝ่ายบิดาแห่งหนึ่งในมีเดียน
16And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
16พระยาห์เวห์ตรัสกับโมเสสว่า
17'Harass the Midianites, and smite them;
17“จงคุกคามชาวมีเดียนและโจมตีพวกเขา
18for they harass you, by their wiles wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.'
18เพราะพวกเขาคุกคามพวกเจ้าด้วยกลอุบายที่ใช้หลอกลวงพวกเจ้าในเรื่องเปโอร์ และในเหตุการณ์เกี่ยวกับโคสบี ลูกสาวของผู้นำแห่งมีเดียนและเป็นพี่น้องร่วมชนชาติของพวกเขา นางถูกฆ่าในวันที่เกิดภัยพิบัติเนื่องจากเรื่องเปโอร์”
