1And afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said unto Pharaoh: 'Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel: Let My people go, that they may hold a feast unto Me in the wilderness.'
1その後、モーセとアロンはファラオのもとへ行き、言った。「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる。『わたしの民を行かせ、荒野でわたしのために祭りを祝わせよ。』」
2And Pharaoh said: 'Who is the LORD, that I should hearken unto His voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, and moreover I will not let Israel go.'
2ファラオは言った。「主とは何者だ。なぜ私がその声に聞き従い、イスラエルを行かせなければならないのか。私は主を知らない。イスラエルを行かせるつもりもない。」
3And they said: 'The God of the Hebrews hath met with us. Let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest He fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.'
3彼らは言った。「ヘブル人の神が私たちにお会いになりました。どうか荒野へ三日の道のりを行かせ、私たちの神、主にいけにえを献げさせてください。そうしなければ、主は疫病や剣で私たちを打たれるでしょう。」
4And the king of Egypt said unto them: 'Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, cause the people to break loose from their work? get you unto your burdens.'
4エジプトの王は彼らに言った。「モーセとアロンよ、なぜあなたがたは民を仕事から離れさせようとするのか。自分たちの重荷に戻りなさい。」
5And Pharaoh said: 'Behold, the people of the land are now many, and will ye make them rest from their burdens?'
5ファラオは言った。「今やこの地の民は大勢いる。それなのに、おまえたちは彼らを労働から休ませようとしている。」
6And the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying:
6その日、ファラオは民の奴隷監督と役人に命じた。
7'Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.
7「れんがを作るためのわらを、これまでのように民に与えてはならない。彼ら自身に行かせて、わらを集めさせなさい。
8And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish aught thereof; for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying: Let us go and sacrifice to our God.
8彼らには、これまでと同じ数のれんがを作らせよ。割り当てを減らしてはならない。彼らは怠けている。だから『行って、私たちの神にいけにえを献げさせてください』と叫ぶのだ。
9Let heavier work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard lying words.'
9この者たちにもっと重い労働を課し、それに没頭させよ。偽りの言葉に耳を貸させるな。」
10And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying: 'Thus saith Pharaoh: I will not give you straw.
10奴隷監督と役人は出て行き、民に告げた。「ファラオはこう言う。『わらは与えない。
11Go yourselves, get you straw where ye can find it; for nought of your work shall be diminished.'
11自分たちで行き、見つけられる所でわらを取りなさい。あなたがたの仕事は少しも減らされない。』」
12So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.
12そこで民はエジプトの地全体に散らばり、わらの代わりに刈り株を集めた。
13And the taskmasters were urgent, saying: 'Fulfil your work, your daily task, as when there was straw.'
13奴隷監督は彼らを急き立てた。「わらがあった時と同じように、日ごとの割り当てを果たせ。」
14And the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, saying: 'Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your appointed task in making brick both yesterday and today as heretofore?'
14ファラオの奴隷監督がイスラエルの子らの上に立てた役人たちは打ちたたかれ、「なぜ昨日も今日も、以前と同じ数のれんがを作らなかったのか」と責められた。
15Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying: 'Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?
15そこで、イスラエルの子らの役人たちは来て、ファラオに叫んで言った。「なぜ、あなたのしもべたちにこのような扱いをなさるのですか。
16There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us: Make brick; and, behold, thy servants are beaten, but the fault is in thine own people.'
16しもべたちにはわらが与えられないのに、『れんがを作れ』と言われます。しもべたちは打ちたたかれています。しかし悪いのは、あなたの民です。」
17But he said: 'Ye are idle, ye are idle; therefore ye say: Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.
17しかしファラオは言った。「おまえたちは怠けているのだ。怠けているのだ。だから、『行って、主にいけにえを献げさせてください』と言うのだ。
18Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks.'
18さあ、行って働け。わらは与えない。しかし、定められた数のれんがは納めよ。」
19And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were set on mischief, when they said: 'Ye shall not diminish aught from your bricks, your daily task.'
19イスラエルの子らの役人たちは、「日ごとのれんがの割り当てを減らしてはならない」と言われ、自分たちが窮地に陥ったことを悟った。
20And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh;
20彼らはファラオのところから出て来た時、道で待っていたモーセとアロンに会い、
21and they said unto them: 'The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.'
21彼らは二人に言った。「主があなたがたをご覧になり、裁かれますように。あなたがたは私たちをファラオとその家臣に憎まれる者とし、私たちを殺す剣を彼らの手に渡したのです。」
22And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said: 'Lord, wherefore hast Thou dealt ill with this people? why is it that Thou hast sent me?
22モーセは主のところに戻って言った。「主よ、なぜあなたはこの民に苦しみをもたらされたのですか。なぜ私を遣わされたのですか。
23For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Thy name, he hath dealt ill with this people; neither hast Thou delivered Thy people at all.'
23私があなたの名によって語るためファラオのもとへ来て以来、彼はこの民を苦しめています。それなのに、あなたはご自分の民を少しも救い出しておられません。」
