1ハツォルの王ヤビンはこれを聞いたとき、マドンの王ヨバブ、シムロンの王、アクシャフの王、
1And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard thereof, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
2北の山地、キネレテの南のアラバ、低地、西のドルの高地にいた王たち、
2and to the kings that were on the north, in the hill-country and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the Lowland, and in the regions of Dor on the west,
3東と西のカナン人、山地のアモリ人、ヘト人、ペリジ人、エブス人、そしてミツパの地のヘルモン山のふもとにいたヒビ人に使いを遣わした。
3to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill-country, and the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
4彼らは全軍を率いて出て来た。その民は海辺の砂のように多く、馬と戦車も非常に多かった。
4And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea-shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.
5これらのすべての王たちは集まって会い、イスラエルと戦うために進んで来て、メロムの水のほとりに一緒に宿営した。
5And all these kings met together, and they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.
6主はヨシュアに言われた。「彼らを恐れてはならない。明日の今ごろ、わたしは彼らを皆、イスラエルの前で打ち倒された者として渡す。彼らの馬の足の筋を切り、戦車を火で焼きなさい。」
6And the LORD said unto Joshua: 'Be not afraid because of them; for to-morrow at this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel; thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.'
7そこでヨシュアとすべての戦士たちは、メロムの水のほとりで突然彼らに襲いかかった。
7So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell upon them.
8主は彼らをイスラエルの手に引き渡された。イスラエルは彼らを打ち、大シドン、ミスレフォト・マイム、東のミツパの谷に至るまで彼らを追いかけた。イスラエルは彼らを打ち、一人も残さなかった。
8And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.
9ヨシュアは主が彼に命じられたとおりに彼らに対して行った。彼は彼らの馬の足の筋を切り、その戦車を火で燃やした。
9And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him; he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.
10その時ヨシュアは引き返してハツォルを占領し、その王を剣で打った。ハツォルは以前、それらすべての王国の首都であったからである。
10And Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
11彼らはその中のすべての人を剣の刃で打って聖絶し、息のあるものを一つも残さなかった。ヨシュアはハツォルを火で焼いた。
11And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them; there was none left that breathed; and he burnt Hazor with fire.
12ヨシュアはこれらの王たちの町とその王をことごとく捕らえ、主のしもべモーセが命じたとおり、剣の刃で打って聖絶した。
12And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and he smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded.
13ただし、丘の上に立っていた町々のうち、イスラエルはハツォルを除いて一つも燃やさなかった。ハツォルだけはヨシュアが燃やした。
13But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only — that did Joshua burn.
14これらの町の戦利品と家畜は、イスラエルの人々が自分たちのものとした。しかし人々は剣の刃で打って滅ぼし、息のあるものを一つも残さなかった。
14And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any that breathed.
15主がそのしもべモーセに命じられたように、モーセはヨシュアに命じ、ヨシュアはそのように行った。主がモーセに命じられたことのうち、彼が行わなかったことは何一つなかった。
15As the LORD commanded Moses His servant, so did Moses command Joshua; and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
16こうしてヨシュアはこの全土、すなわち山地、ネゲブ全土、ゴシェンの全土、低地、アラバ、イスラエルの山地とその低地を占領した。
16So Joshua took all that land, the hill-country, and all the South, and all the land of Goshen, and the Lowland, and the Arabah, and the hill-country of Israel, and the Lowland of the same;
17セイルへ上って行くハラク山から、ヘルモン山のふもとのレバノンの谷にあるバアル・ガドに至るまでである。彼は彼らのすべての王を捕らえ、打って殺した。
17from the bare mountain, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon; and all their kings he took, and smote them, and put them to death.
18ヨシュアはこれらすべての王たちと長い間戦った。
18Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
19ギベオンの住民であるヒビ人を除いて、イスラエルの人々と平和を結んだ町は一つもなかった。彼らは他をすべて戦いによって占領した。
19There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon; they took all in battle.
20彼らの心を頑なにし、イスラエルに戦いを挑ませたのは主であった。それは、彼らが聖絶され、あわれみを受けることなく、主がモーセに命じられたとおり滅ぼされるためであった。
20For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that they might be utterly destroyed, that they might have no favour, but that they might be destroyed, as the LORD commanded Moses.
21その時ヨシュアは、ヘブロン、デビル、アナブ、ユダの全山地、イスラエルの全山地からアナク人を断ち滅ぼし、その町々とともに聖絶した。
21And Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill-country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill-country of Judah, and from all the hill-country of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.
22イスラエルの人々の地にアナク人は一人も残っていなかった。ただガザ、ガト、アシュドデにだけ残っていた。
22There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel; only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, did some remain.
23こうしてヨシュアは、主がモーセに告げられたとおり全土を占領し、部族ごとの割り当てに従って相続地としてイスラエルに与えた。その地には戦いがやみ、安息があった。
23So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD spoke unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.
