1アブラムの妻サライは、彼に子どもを産まなかった。彼女にはハガルという名のエジプト人の女のしもべがいた。
1Now Sarai Abram's wife bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2サライはアブラムに言った。「見よ、主は私に子を産ませてくださいません。どうか、私のしもべのところに入ってください。彼女によって、私も子を得られるかもしれません。」アブラムはサライの言うことを聞いた。
2And Sarai said unto Abram: 'Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; it may be that I shall be builded up through her.' And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3アブラムがカナンの地に十年住んだ後、アブラムの妻サライは、エジプト人のしもべハガルを連れて来て、夫アブラムの妻として彼に与えた。
3And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.
4アブラムがハガルのところに入ると、彼女は身ごもった。自分が身ごもったのを見ると、女主人を軽んじた。
4And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5サライはアブラムに言った。「私が受けている不当な扱いは、あなたの責任です。私は自分のしもべをあなたに与えました。しかし、彼女は自分が身ごもったのを知って、私を見下しています。主が私とあなたの間を裁かれますように。」
5And Sarai said unto Abram: 'My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.'
6アブラムはサライに言った。「見よ、あなたのしもべはあなたの手の中にある。あなたの目に良いと思うように、彼女を扱いなさい。」サライが彼女を厳しく扱ったので、彼女はサライのもとから逃げた。
6But Abram said unto Sarai: 'Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes.' And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
7主の使いは、荒野の泉のほとり、シュルへ行く道にある泉のほとりで彼女を見つけた。
7And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8彼は言った。「サライのしもべハガルよ、あなたはどこから来たのか。そして、どこへ行くのか。」 彼女は言った。「私は女主人サライのもとから逃げているところです。」
8And he said: 'Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence camest thou? and whither goest thou?' And she said: 'I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.'
9主の使いは彼女に言った。「女主人のもとへ帰り、その手の下に身を低くせよ。」
9And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.'
10主の使いは彼女に言った。「わたしはあなたの子孫を大いに増し加える。彼らは多すぎて数えきれないほどになる。」
10And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11主の使いは彼女に言った。「見よ、あなたは身ごもっており、男の子を産む。あなたはその子をイシュマエルと名付けなさい。主があなたの苦しみを聞き入れられたからである。
11And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
12彼は野ろばのような人になる。彼の手はすべての人に向かい、すべての人の手も彼に向かう。彼はすべての兄弟たちと対立して住むようになる。」
12And he shall be a wild ass of a man: his hand shall be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his brethren.'
13彼女は、自分に語られた主を「あなたは私を見てくださる神」と呼んだ。「私を見てくださる方を見た後も、なお私は生きている」と言ったのである。
13And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou art a God of seeing; for she said: 'Have I even here seen Him that seeth Me?'
14それゆえ、その井戸はベエル・ラハイ・ロイと呼ばれた。見よ、それはカデシュとベレドの間にある。
14Wherefore the well was called 'Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15ハガルはアブラムに男の子を産んだ。アブラムはハガルが産んだ自分の息子の名をイシュマエルと呼んだ。
15And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16ハガルがアブラムにイシュマエルを産んだとき、アブラムは八十六歳であった。
16And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
