1そのころ、ユダは兄弟たちから離れて下って行き、ヒラという名のあるアドゥラム人のところに身を寄せた。
1And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
2ユダはそこで、シュアという名のあるカナン人の娘を見た。彼は彼女をめとり、彼女のところに入った。
2And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her.
3彼女は身ごもって男の子を産み、ユダはその名をエルと呼んだ。
3And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er.
4彼女は再び身ごもって男の子を産み、その名をオナンと呼んだ。
4And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan.
5彼女はさらにまた男の子を産み、その名をシェラと呼んだ。彼女が彼を産んだとき、ユダはケジブにいた。
5And she yet again bore a son, and called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.
6ユダは長男エルのために妻をめとった。彼女の名はタマルであった。
6And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar.
7ユダの長男エルは主の目に悪であったので、主は彼を死なせられた。
7And Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
8ユダはオナンに言った。「あなたの兄の妻のところに入り、夫の兄弟としての義務を彼女に果たし、あなたの兄のために子孫を起こしなさい。」
8And Judah said unto Onan: 'Go in unto thy brother's wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.'
9オナンは、その子孫が自分のものにならないことを知っていた。それで、兄の妻のところに入るとき、兄に子孫を与えないように、精を地にこぼした。
9And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.
10彼が行ったことは主の目に悪であったので、主は彼をも殺された。
10And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of the LORD; and He slew him also.
11そこでユダは嫁のタマルに言った。「私の息子シェラが成長するまで、父の家でやもめとして暮らしなさい。」彼は、「兄たちのように、シェラも死んではならない」と考えたのである。タマルは父の家に帰って住んだ。
11Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law: 'Remain a widow in thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown up'; for he said: 'Lest he also die, like his brethren.' And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
12時が経ち、ユダの妻であるシュアの娘が死んだ。ユダは慰めを得た後、友人のアドゥラム人ヒラと共に、ティムナにいる羊の毛を刈る者たちのところへ上って行った。
12And in process of time Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheep-shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13タマルは、「見よ、あなたの舅が羊の毛を刈るためにティムナへ上って行く」と告げられた。
13And it was told Tamar, saying: 'Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnah to shear his sheep.'
14彼女はやもめの衣を脱ぎ、ベールで身を覆い、身を包んで、ティムナへの道にあるエナイムの入り口に座った。シェラが成長したのに、自分が彼の妻として与えられていないのを見たからである。
14And she put off from her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entrance of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she was not given unto him to wife.
15ユダは彼女を見たとき、彼女が顔を覆っていたので、遊女だと思った。
15When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she had covered her face.
16彼は道端の彼女のところへ向きを変え、「さあ、どうかあなたのところに入らせてくれ」と言った。彼女が自分の嫁であることを知らなかったからである。 彼女は言った。「私のところに入るために、何をくださいますか。」
16And he turned unto her by the way, and said: 'Come, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee'; for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said: 'What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?'
17彼は言った。「群れから子山羊を一匹送ろう。」 彼女は言った。「それを送るまで、私に保証の品をくださいますか。」
17And he said: 'I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock.' And she said: 'Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?'
18彼は言った。「何の保証の品を与えようか。」 彼女は言った。「あなたの印章とひも、そしてあなたの手にある杖です。」彼はそれらを彼女に与え、彼女のところに入り、彼女は彼によって身ごもった。
18And he said: 'What pledge shall I give thee?' And she said: 'Thy signet and thy cord, and thy staff that is in thy hand.' And he gave them to her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
19彼女は立ち上がって去り、ベールを脱いで、再びやもめの衣を着た。
19And she arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20ユダは女の手から保証の品を受け取るために、友人のアドゥラム人の手で子山羊を送ったが、彼は彼女を見つけられなかった。
20And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand; but he found her not.
21そこで彼はその場所の人々に尋ねた。「道端のエナイムにいたあの遊女はどこにいますか。」 彼らは言った。「ここに遊女はいませんでした。」
21Then he asked the men of her place, saying: 'Where is the harlot, that was at Enaim by the wayside?' And they said: 'There hath been no harlot here.'
22彼はユダのところに戻って言った。「彼女を見つけることはできませんでした。また、その場所の人々も『ここに遊女はいなかった』と言っていました。」
22And he returned to Judah, and said: 'I have not found her; and also the men of the place said: There hath been no harlot here.'
23ユダは言った。「私たちが恥をかかないように、彼女にそれらを持たせておこう。見よ、私はこの子山羊を送ったが、あなたは彼女を見つけられなかったのだから。」
23And Judah said: 'Let her take it, lest we be put to shame; behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.'
24約三か月後、ユダに、「あなたの嫁タマルは遊女となり、しかも淫行によって身ごもっています」との知らせがあった。 ユダは言った。「彼女を引き出し、焼き殺せ。」
24And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying: 'Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by harlotry.' And Judah said: 'Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.'
25彼女は引き出されようとしたとき、舅に人を遣わして言った。「私は、これらの品の持ち主によって身ごもりました。どうか、印章とひもと杖が誰のものか、お確かめください。」
25When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying: 'By the man, whose these are, am I with child'; and she said: 'Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.'
26ユダはそれらを認めて言った。「彼女は私よりも正しい。私が息子のシェラに彼女を与えなかったからだ。」彼は二度と彼女を知ることはなかった。
26And Judah acknowledged them, and said: 'She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son.' And he knew her again no more.
27彼女の出産の時が来ると、見よ、彼女の胎内には双子がいた。
27And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
28彼女が出産するとき、一人が手を出した。助産婦はそれを取り、その手に赤い糸を結びつけて、「この子が先に出た」と言った。
28And it came to pass, when she travailed, that one put out a hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying: 'This came out first.'
29しかし、その子が手を引っ込めると、見よ、その兄弟が出て来たので、彼女は「どうしてあなたは自分で破れ目を作ったのか」と言った。それゆえ、彼の名はペレツと呼ばれた。
29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold his brother came out; and she said: 'Wherefore hast thou made a breach for thyself?' Therefore his name was called Perez.
30その後、手に赤い糸を結んだ兄弟が出て来た。彼の名はゼラと呼ばれた。
30And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zerah.
