1これらのことの後、幻の中で主の言葉がアブラムに臨んだ。「恐れるな、アブラム。わたしはあなたの盾。あなたの受ける報いは非常に大きい。」
1After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying: 'Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield, thy reward shall be exceeding great.'
2アブラムは言った。「主なる神よ、私に何をくださるというのですか。私には子どもがなく、私の家を継ぐ者はダマスコのエリエゼルです。」
2And Abram said: 'O Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give me, seeing I go hence childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?'
3アブラムは言った。「見よ、あなたは私に子どもを与えてくださいませんでした。見よ、私の家で生まれた者が私の跡継ぎとなるのです。」
3And Abram said: 'Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed, and, lo, one born in my house is to be mine heir.'
4見よ、主の言葉が彼に臨んだ。「その男はあなたの跡継ぎとはならない。あなた自身から生まれ出る者が、あなたの跡継ぎとなる。」
4And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying: 'This man shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.'
5主は彼を外に連れ出して言われた。「さあ、天を仰いで、星を数えなさい。もし数えることができるなら。」そして彼に言われた。「あなたの子孫もそのようになる。」
5And He brought him forth abroad, and said: 'Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to count them'; and He said unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.'
6アブラムは主を信じた。主はそれを彼に義と認められた。
6And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for righteousness.
7また彼に言われた。「わたしは、この地をあなたに与えて受け継がせるため、あなたをカルデアのウルから導き出した主である。」
7And He said unto him: 'I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.'
8アブラムは言った。「主なる神よ、私がそれを受け継ぐことを、どのようにして知ることができるでしょうか。」
8And he said: 'O Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?'
9主は彼に言われた。「三歳の雌牛、三歳の雌山羊、三歳の雄羊、山鳩、そして家鳩のひなを、わたしのところに持って来なさい。」
9And He said unto him: 'Take Me a heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtle-dove, and a young pigeon.'
10彼はこれらすべてを持って来て、真ん中から二つに切り裂き、それぞれの半分を互いに向かい合わせて置いた。しかし、鳥は切り裂かなかった。
10And he took him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each half over against the other; but the birds divided he not.
11猛禽が死肉の上に降りて来たが、アブラムはそれらを追い払った。
11And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
12日が沈みかけたころ、深い眠りがアブラムに下った。すると見よ、恐怖と大きな闇が彼を襲った。
12And it came to pass, that, when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, a dread, even a great darkness, fell upon him.
13主はアブラムに言われた。「あなたは、このことを確かに知っておきなさい。あなたの子孫は、自分たちのものではない国で寄留者となり、その国の人々に仕える。彼らは四百年の間、あなたの子孫を苦しめる。
13And He said unto Abram: 'Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
14しかし、彼らが仕えるその民族を、わたしは裁く。その後、彼らは大きな財産を持って出て来る。
14and also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15あなた自身は、平安のうちにあなたの先祖のところへ行き、長寿を全うして葬られる。
15But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
16そして四代目に、彼らはここに戻って来る。アモリ人の罪がまだ満ちていないからである。」
16And in the fourth generation they shall come back hither; for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full.'
17日が沈んで暗くなったとき、見よ、煙を吐く炉と燃えるたいまつが、これらの切り裂かれた動物の間を通り過ぎた。
17And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and there was thick darkness, behold a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch that passed between these pieces.
18その日、主はアブラムと契約を結んで言われた。「わたしはあなたの子孫に、エジプトの川からあの大河、ユーフラテス川までのこの地を与えた。
18In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: 'Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates;
19すなわち、ケニ人、ケナズ人、カデモニ人、
19the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,
20ヘト人、ペリジ人、レファイム人、
20and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,
21アモリ人、カナン人、ギルガシ人、そしてエブス人の地である。」
21and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.'
