1亞伯蘭 的妻子 撒萊 不給他生兒女。 撒萊 有一個使女，名叫 夏甲 ，是 埃及 人。
1Now Sarai Abram's wife bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2撒萊 對 亞伯蘭 說：「耶和華使我不能生育。求你和我的使女同房，或者我可以因她得孩子。」 亞伯蘭 聽從了 撒萊 的話。
2And Sarai said unto Abram: 'Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; it may be that I shall be builded up through her.' And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3於是 亞伯蘭 的妻子 撒萊 將使女 埃及 人 夏甲 給了丈夫為妾；那時 亞伯蘭 在 迦南 已經住了十年。
3And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.
4亞伯蘭 與 夏甲 同房， 夏甲 就懷了孕；她見自己有孕，就小看她的主母。
4And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5撒萊 對 亞伯蘭 說：「我因你受屈。我將我的使女放在你懷中，她見自己有了孕，就小看我。願耶和華在你我中間判斷。」
5And Sarai said unto Abram: 'My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.'
6亞伯蘭 對 撒萊 說：「使女在你手下，你可以隨意待她。」 撒萊 苦待她，她就從 撒萊 面前逃走了。
6But Abram said unto Sarai: 'Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes.' And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
7耶和華的使者在曠野 書珥 路上的水泉旁遇見她，
7And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8對她說：「 撒萊 的使女 夏甲 ，你從哪裏來？要往哪裏去？」 夏甲 說：「我從我的主母 撒萊 面前逃出來。」
8And he said: 'Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence camest thou? and whither goest thou?' And she said: 'I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.'
9耶和華的使者對她說：「你回到你主母那裏，服在她手下」；
9And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.'
10又說：「我必使你的後裔極其繁多，甚至不可勝數」；
10And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11並說：「你如今懷孕要生一個兒子，可以給他起名叫 以實瑪利 ，因為耶和華聽見了你的苦情。
11And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
12他為人必像野驢。他的手要攻打人，人的手也要攻打他；他必住在眾弟兄的東邊。」
12And he shall be a wild ass of a man: his hand shall be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his brethren.'
13夏甲 就稱那對她說話的耶和華為「看顧人的上帝」。因而說：「在這裏我也看見那看顧我的嗎？」
13And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou art a God of seeing; for she said: 'Have I even here seen Him that seeth Me?'
14所以這井名叫 庇耳‧拉海‧萊 。這井正在 加低斯 和 巴列 中間。
14Wherefore the well was called 'Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15後來 夏甲 給 亞伯蘭 生了一個兒子； 亞伯蘭 給他起名叫 以實瑪利 。
15And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16夏甲 給 亞伯蘭 生 以實瑪利 的時候， 亞伯蘭 年八十六歲。
16And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
