1猶大 王 約雅敬 在位第三年， 巴比倫 王 尼布甲尼撒 來到 耶路撒冷 ，將城圍困。
1IN THE third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2主將 猶大 王 約雅敬 ，並上帝殿中器皿的幾分交付他手。他就把這器皿帶到 示拿 地，收入他神的廟裏，放在他神的庫中。
2And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god, and the vessels he brought into the treasure-house of his god.
3王吩咐太監長 亞施毗拿 ，從 以色列 人的宗室和貴冑中帶進幾個人來，
3And the king spoke unto Ashpenaz his chief officer, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, and of the seed royal, and of the nobles,
4就是年少沒有殘疾、相貌俊美、通達各樣學問、知識聰明俱備、足能侍立在王宮裏的，要教他們 迦勒底 的文字言語。
4youths in whom was no blemish, but fair to look on, and skilful in all wisdom, and skilful in knowledge, and discerning in thought, and such as had ability to stand in the king's palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5王派定將自己所用的膳和所飲的酒，每日賜他們一分，養他們三年。滿了三年，好叫他們在王面前侍立。
5And the king appointed for them a daily portion of the king's food, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6他們中間有 猶大 族的人： 但以理 、 哈拿尼雅 、 米沙利 、 亞撒利雅 。
6Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
7太監長給他們起名：稱 但以理 為 伯提沙撒 ，稱 哈拿尼雅 為 沙得拉 ，稱 米沙利 為 米煞 ，稱 亞撒利雅 為 亞伯尼歌 。
7And the chief of the officers gave names unto them: unto Daniel he gave the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.
8但以理 卻立志不以王的膳和王所飲的酒玷污自己，所以求太監長容他不玷污自己。
8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's food, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the officers that he might not defile himself.
9上帝使 但以理 在太監長眼前蒙恩惠，受憐憫。
9And God granted Daniel mercy and compassion in the sight of the chief of the officers.
10太監長對 但以理 說：「我懼怕我主我王，他已經派定你們的飲食，倘若他見你們的面貌比你們同歲的少年人肌瘦，怎麼好呢？這樣，你們就使我的頭在王那裏難保。」
10And the chief of the officers said unto Daniel: 'I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces sad in comparison with the youths that are of your own age? so would ye endanger my head with the king.'
11但以理 對太監長所派管理 但以理 、 哈拿尼雅 、 米沙利 、 亞撒利雅 的委辦說：
11Then said Daniel to the steward, whom the chief of the officers had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
12「求你試試僕人們十天，給我們素菜吃，白水喝，
12'Try thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13然後看看我們的面貌和用王膳那少年人的面貌，就照你所看的待僕人吧！」
13Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the youths that eat of the king's food; and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.'
14委辦便允准他們這件事，試看他們十天。
14So he hearkened unto them in this matter, and tried them ten days.
15過了十天，見他們的面貌比用王膳的一切少年人更加俊美肥胖。
15And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths that did eat of the king's food.
16於是委辦撤去派他們用的膳，飲的酒，給他們素菜吃。
16So the steward took away their food, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.
17這四個少年人，上帝在各樣文字學問上賜給他們聰明知識； 但以理 又明白各樣的異象和夢兆。
17Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18尼布甲尼撒 王預定帶進少年人來的日期滿了，太監長就把他們帶到王面前。
18And at the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the chief of the officers brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19王與他們談論，見少年人中無一人能比 但以理 、 哈拿尼雅 、 米沙利 、 亞撒利雅 ，所以留他們在王面前侍立。
19And the king spoke with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore stood they before the king.
20王考問他們一切事，就見他們的智慧聰明比通國的術士和用法術的勝過十倍。
20And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his realm.
21到 塞魯士 王元年， 但以理 還在。
21And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
