1さて、そのころ、弟子の数が増えるにつれて、ギリシャ語を話すユダヤ人たち から、ヘブル語を話すユダヤ人たちに対する苦情が出ました。日々の配給で、彼らのやもめたちがないがしろにされていたからです。
1And in those days, the number of the disciples increasing, there arose a murmuring of the Greeks against the Hebrews, for that their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
2そこで十二人は弟子全体を呼び集めて言いました。「私たちが神の言葉を後回しにして、食事の世話をするのは適切ではありません。
2Then the twelve calling together the multitude of the disciples, said: It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.
3ですから兄弟たち、あなたがたの中から、評判が良く、聖霊と知恵に満ちた人を七人選びなさい。この仕事を彼らに任せることにします。
3Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
4私たちは祈りと、言葉に仕える務めに専念します。」
4But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
5この提案は一同を喜ばせました。そこで彼らは、信仰と聖霊に満ちた人ステファノ、またピリポ、プロコロ、ニカノル、ティモン、パルメナ、アンティオキアの改宗者ニコラオを選び、
5And the saying was liked by all the multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith, and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch.
6使徒たちの前に立たせました。使徒たちは祈ってから、彼らの上に手を置きました。
6These they set before the apostles; and they praying, imposed hands upon them.
7神の言葉はますます広まり、エルサレムでは弟子の数が大いに増えました。また、非常に多くの祭司たちが信仰に従うようになりました。
7And the word of the Lord increased; and the number of the disciples was multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly: a great multitude also of the priests obeyed the faith.
8さて、ステファノは信仰と力に満ち、民の間で大きな不思議としるしを行っていました。
8And Stephen, full of grace and fortitude, did great wonders and signs among the people.
9ところが、「解放奴隷の会堂」と呼ばれる会堂に属する人々の一部と、キレネ人、アレクサンドリア人、キリキアやアジア出身の人々が立ち上がり、ステファノと議論しました。
9Now there arose some of that which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of them that were of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.
10しかし、彼が語る知恵と霊に対抗することができませんでした。
10And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit that spoke.
11そこで彼らは人々をそそのかし、「われわれは、彼がモーセと神を冒瀆する言葉を語るのを聞いた」と言わせました。
11Then they suborned men to say, they had heard him speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.
12また、民や長老たち、律法学者たちを扇動し、ステファノを襲って捕らえ、最高法院へ連れて行きました。
12And they stirred up the people, and the ancients, and the scribes; and running together, they took him, and brought him to the council.
13そして偽りの証人たちを立てました。彼らは言いました。「この男は、この聖なる場所と律法を冒瀆する言葉を語ってやみません。
13And they set up false witnesses, who said: This man ceaseth not to speak words against the holy place and the law.
14あのナザレのイエスがこの場所を壊し、モーセがわれわれに伝えた慣習を変えると、彼が言うのを聞いたからです。」
14For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the traditions which Moses delivered unto us.
15最高法院に座っていた者たちが皆、ステファノをじっと見つめると、その顔は天使の顔のように見えました。
15And all that sat in the council, looking on him, saw his face as if it had been the face of an angel.
