1イエス・キリストの使徒ペテロから、ポント、ガラテヤ、カパドキア、アジア、ビティニアに離散し、寄留者として暮らす選ばれた人々へ。
1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers dispersed through Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, elect,
2あなたがたは、父なる神の予知に基づき、御霊による聖別を受け、イエス・キリストに従い、その血を振りかけられるために選ばれました。恵みと平安が、あなたがたにますます豊かにありますように。
2According to the foreknowledge of God the Father, unto the sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you and peace be multiplied.
3私たちの主イエス・キリストの父なる神が、ほめたたえられますように。神はその豊かなあわれみにより、イエス・キリストが死者の中から復活されたことによって、私たちを新しく生まれさせ、生ける望みを与えてくださいました。
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy hath regenerated us unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4また、朽ちず、汚れず、色あせることのないものを受け継ぐようにしてくださいました。それは、あなたがたのために天に蓄えられています。
4Unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that can not fade, reserved in heaven for you,
5あなたがたは、終わりの時に現されるために用意されている救いを受けるよう、信仰を通して神の力に守られています。
5Who, by the power of God, are kept by faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time.
6あなたがたは、この救いを大いに喜んでいます。今しばらくの間、必要があって、さまざまな試練によって悲しまなければならないとしても、
6Wherein you shall greatly rejoice, if now you must be for a little time made sorrowful in divers temptations:
7火で精錬されても朽ちる金よりはるかに尊いあなたがたの信仰が、試練を経て真実であると認められ、イエス・キリストが現れる時に、称賛と栄光と誉れをもたらすためです。
7That the trial of your faith (much more precious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise and glory and honour at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8あなたがたは、この方に直接お会いしたことがなくても愛しています。今は見ていなくても信じ、言葉では言い表せない、栄光に満ちた喜びにあふれています。
8Whom having not seen, you love: in whom also now, though you see him not, you believe: and believing shall rejoice with joy unspeakable and glorified;
9信仰の結末である、魂の救いを受けているからです。
9Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10この救いについて、預言者たちは熱心に探り、詳しく調べました。彼らは、あなたがたに与えられる恵みについて預言し、
10Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and diligently searched, who prophesied of the grace to come in you.
11自分たちのうちにおられるキリストの霊が、キリストの苦難と、それに続く栄光とを前もって示された時、それがだれを、またどのような時を指しているのかを調べました。
11Searching what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ in them did signify: when it foretold those sufferings that are in Christ, and the glories that should follow:
12彼らがこれらのことによって仕えていたのは、自分たちのためではなく、あなたがたのためであることが示されました。そして今、それらのことは、天から遣わされた聖霊によって福音を宣べ伝えた人々を通して、あなたがたに告げ知らされました。御使いたちも、これらのことをのぞき込みたいと願っています。
12To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you they ministered those things which are now declared to you by them that have preached the gospel to you, the Holy Ghost being sent down from heaven, on whom the angels desire to look.
13ですから、心を引き締めて行動に備えなさい。 身を慎み、イエス・キリストが現れる時にもたらされるその恵みに、すべての望みを置きなさい。
13Wherefore having the loins of your mind girt up, being sober, trust perfectly in the grace which is offered you in the revelation of Jesus Christ,
14従順な子どもとして、無知であったころに抱いていた欲望に、自分を合わせてはなりません。
14As children of obedience, not fashioned according to the former desires of your ignorance:
15むしろ、あなたがたを召された方が聖なる方であるように、あなたがた自身も、あらゆる行いにおいて聖なる者となりなさい。
15But according to him that hath called you, who is holy, be you also in all manner of conversation holy:
16「あなたがたは聖なる者でありなさい。わたしが聖なる者だからである」と書かれているからです。
16Because it is written: You shall be holy, for I am holy.
17一人ひとりの行いに応じて、分け隔てなく裁かれる方を父と呼ぶのであれば、寄留者として過ごす間を、畏れをもって過ごしなさい。
17And if you invoke as Father him who, without respect of persons, judgeth according to every one’s work: converse in fear during the time of your sojourning here.
18あなたがたが先祖から受け継いだむなしい生き方から贖われたのは、銀や金のような朽ちるものによったのではありません。
18Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things as gold or silver, from your vain conversation of the tradition of your fathers:
19傷も汚れもない子羊の血のような、キリストの尊い血によったのです。
19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb unspotted and undefiled,
20キリストは、世界の基が据えられる前からあらかじめ知られていましたが、この終わりの時代に、あなたがたのために現されました。
20Foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but manifested in the last times for you,
21あなたがたは、この方を通して、この方を死者の中から復活させ、栄光をお与えになった神を信じています。こうして、あなたがたの信仰と望みは神に置かれているのです。
21Who through him are faithful in God, who raised him up from the dead, and hath given him glory, that your faith and hope might be in God.
22あなたがたは、聖霊によって真理に従い、自分の魂を清め、偽りのない兄弟愛を抱くようになったのですから、心から熱く互いに愛し合いなさい。
22Purifying your souls in the obedience of charity, with a brotherly love, from a sincere heart love one another earnestly:
23あなたがたは、朽ちる種からではなく、朽ちない種から、すなわち、いつまでも生きて残る神の言葉によって、新しく生まれたのです。
23Being born again not of corruptible seed, but incorruptible, by the word of God who liveth and remaineth for ever.
24聖書にこうあります。 「すべての肉なる者は草のようであり、 人の栄光はすべて草の花のようである。 草は枯れ、花は散る。
24For all flesh is as grass; and all the glory thereof as the flower of grass. The grass is withered, and the flower thereof is fallen away.
25しかし、主の言葉は永遠に残る。」 これが、あなたがたに福音として宣べ伝えられた言葉です。
25But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel hath been preached unto you.
