JPS Tanakh (Jewish Publication Society, 1917)
1Khawnbang hanah amoek hmah, khawnbang ah timaw angzo tih, tito na panoek ai.
1Boast not thyself of to-morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
2Na pakha hoi amkoeh hmah, minawk kalah mah pakoeh nasoe; na pahni hoiah amkoeh hmah, minawk kalah ih pahni mah pakoeh nasoe.
2Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
3Thlung loe azit moe, savuet doeh azit; toe kamthu palungphuihaih loe to hnik pongah doeh azit kue.
3A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's vexation is heavier than they both.
4Palungphuihaih loe zit thoh; toe mi maw uthaih hmaa ah angdoe thai tih?
4Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; but who is able to stand before jealousy?
5Tamquta hoiah amlung pongah loe kamtueng ah angzoeh to hoih kue.
5Better is open rebuke than love that is hidden.
6Ampui loe ahmaa caak naah doeh oepthoh; toe misa mah mok ih loe alinghaih ah ni oh.
6Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are importunate.
7Zok amhah kami loe khoitui to panuet; toe zok amthlam kami hanah loe ka khaa doeh luep.
7The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
8Angmah ih im caehtaak kami loe, angmah ih tabu azawk taak tavaa hoiah anghmong.
8As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.
9Hmuihoih hoi hmuihoih tui mah poekhaih to nawmsak; ampui kahoih mah loe anghoe koi kaom poekhaih to palung tang hoiah paek.
9Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart; so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
10Nam pui hoi nam pa ih ampui to pahnawt hmah; raihaih tong naah nam nawkamya im ah caeh hmah; na imtaeng kami loe ahmuen kangthla ah kaom nam nawkamya pongah hoih kue.
10Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity; better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
11Ka capa, palungha ah loe, ka palungthin hae anghoesak ah; to tiah ni kai hnaphnae kaminawk to ka pathim thai tih.
11My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that taunteth me.
12Khopoek thaih kami loe raihaih to hnukcoek moe, abuephaih to pakrong; toe poekhaih tawn ai kami loe muk rumram moe, patangkhanghaih to hnuk.
12A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the thoughtless pass on, and are punished.
13Kahni to na khring pae ai ah loe angvin hoi panoek ai ih nongpata khaeah lokkamhaih to sah hmah.
13Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge that is surety for an alien woman.
14Khawnthaw ah angmah ih ampui hanah tha hoi tahamhoihaih paek kami loe, anih tangoenghaih baktiah ni oh.
14He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.
15Angzoeh koeh zu loe cawh tue ah, khotui kalong imphu hoiah anghmong.
15A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike;
16To baktih nongpata to hawk kami loe, takhi hawk kami hoiah anghmong, anih loe bantang ban ah bawh ih situi baktiah oh.
16He that would hide her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand betrayeth itself.
17Sum mah sum to noetsak baktih toengah, ampui mah angmah ih ampui mikhmai to pansak.
17Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
18Thaiduetkung toep kami loe thaiduet thaih to caa tih; to baktih toengah Angraeng khenzawn kami loe pakoehhaih to om tih.
18Whoso keepeth the fig-tree shall eat the fruit thereof; and he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.
19Tui pongah krang amtueng baktih toengah, kami ih palungthin mah kami to amtuengsak.
19As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.
20Hell hoi duekhaih loe natuek naah doeh koi thai ai; to baktih toengah kami mik mah hnukhaih to boep thai ai.
20The nether-world and Destruction are never satiated; so the eyes of man are never satiated.
21Sumkanglung tui pacii hanah laom to oh, suitui pacii hanah kamngaeh hmai to oh; to baktih toengah kami doeh pakoehhaih hoiah tanoek thaih.
21The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, and a man is tried by his praise.
22Kamthu loe cang hoi nawnto suum pongah na daeng cadoeh, amthuhaih to anghmaa thai mak ai.
22Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle among groats, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.
23Nangmah ih tuunawk to kahoih ah panoek ah loe, nangmah ih maehnawk to kahoih ah khenzawn ah.
23Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds;
24Angraenghaih loe dungzan ah cak poe ai; angraeng lumuek doeh caa nawktanawk khoek to cak poe ai.
24For riches are not for ever; and doth the crown endure unto all generations?
25Phroh loe amprawk moe, phroh kangtha to tacawt, mae ah kaom lawk ih cang to aah o.
25When the hay is mown, and the tender grass showeth itself, and the herbs of the mountains are gathered in;
26Tuu zawhhaih phoisa hoiah khukbuen to qan ah, maeh zawhhaih atho hoiah lawk to qan ah.
26The lambs will be for thy clothing, and the goats the price for a field.
27Na caanawk hoi na tamna nongpatanawk pacah hanah, maeh tahnutui kapop ah na tawn tih. p
27And there will be goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household; and maintenance for thy maidens.
