1あなたの神、主が、あなたの神、主の与えられる地の国々の民を断ち滅ぼし、あなたが彼らに取って代わり、その町々やその家々に住むとき、
1When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou dost succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses;
2あなたの神、主があなたに与えて所有させてくださるその地の真ん中に、三つの町をえり分けよ。
2thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy GOD giveth thee to possess it.
3道を整え、あなたの神、主が受け継がせる地を三つの地域に分けよ。人を殺した者がだれでもそこへ逃れられるようにするためである。
3Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and divide the borders of thy land, which the LORD thy God causeth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee thither.
4人を殺した者がそこに逃れて生き延びる場合の規定は次のとおりである。過去に憎しみを抱いていなかったのに、過って隣人を殺した場合、
4And this is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee thither and live: whoso killeth his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in time past;
5たとえば、隣人と森に入り、木を切ろうとして斧を振り下ろしたとき、斧の頭が柄から抜け、隣人に当たって死なせた場合である。その者はこれらの町の一つに逃れ、生き延びることができる。
5as when a man goeth into the forest with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of these cities and live;
6それは、血の復讐をする者が心を熱くして人を殺した者を追いかけ、道のりが長いために彼に追いつき、彼を打ち殺すことがないためである。その人は過去に憎しみを抱いていなかったので、死刑に値しなかったからである。
6lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and smite him mortally; whereas he was not deserving of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
7それゆえ、わたしはあなたに命じる。「三つの町をえり分けよ。」
7Wherefore I command thee, saying: 'Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.'
8もしあなたの神、主があなたの父祖たちに誓われたようにあなたの境界を広げ、あなたの父祖たちに与えると約束されたすべての地をあなたに与えられるなら、
8And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy border, as He hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which He promised to give unto thy fathers —
9わたしが今日命じるこのすべての命令を守り行い、あなたの神、主を愛し、いつもその道を歩むなら、この三つの町に、さらに三つの町を加えよ。
9if thou shalt keep all this commandment to do it, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in His ways — then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three;
10それは、あなたの神、主が所有地としてあなたに与えられる地の中で、罪のない者の血が流されて、あなたに血を流した罪が及ばないためである。
10that innocent blood be not shed in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
11しかし、もし人が隣人を憎み、待ち伏せして彼に立ち向かい、彼を打ち殺して死なせ、これらの町の一つに逃げ込んだなら、
11But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die; and he flee into one of these cities;
12その町の長老たちは人を遣わして彼を連れ出し、血の復讐をする者の手に引き渡して死なせる。
12then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
13彼をあわれんではならない。イスラエルから罪のない者の血を流した罪を取り除け。そうすれば、あなたは幸いを得る。
13Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the blood of the innocent from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
14あなたの神、主があなたに与えて所有させてくださる地、すなわちあなたが受け継ぐ所有地において、昔の人々が定めた隣人の境界標を移してはならない。
14Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set, in thine inheritance which thou shalt inherit, in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
15人が犯すどのような咎や罪についても、一人の証人だけで人を罪に定めてはならない。二人または三人の証人の証言によって、事は確定する。
15One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth; at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be establishment
16もし不当な証人が人に対して立ち上がり、悪事について彼に不利な証言をするなら、
16If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to bear perverted witness against him;
17争っている双方は主の前、すなわちその時代の祭司たちと裁き人たちの前に立つ。
17then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges that shall be in those days.
18裁き人たちは念入りに調べる。もしその証人が偽りの証人で、兄弟に対して偽証したことが明らかになれば、
18And the judges shall inquire diligently; and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19彼が兄弟にしようと企んだとおりに、彼にせよ。こうして、あなたがたの中から悪を取り除け。
19then shall ye do unto him, as he had purposed to do unto his brother; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.
20残った者たちはこれを聞いて恐れ、それ以降、二度とそのような悪をあなたのただ中で行うことはないであろう。
20And those that remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of thee.
21あわれんではならない。命には命、目には目、歯には歯、手には手、足には足である。
21And thine eye shall not pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
