1Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days.
1あなたのパンを水の上に投げよ。 多くの日を経て、あなたはそれを見いだす。
2Divide a portion into seven, yea, even into eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
2分け前を七人に、いや八人にも与えよ。 地上にどのような災いが起こるか、あなたには分からない。
3If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth; and if a tree fall in the south, or in the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there shall it be.
3雲が雨で満ちれば、地上に雨を降らせる。 木が南に倒れても、北に倒れても、 木は倒れた場所にそのままある。
4He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.
4風を観察する者は種を蒔かず、 雲を見つめる者は刈り入れをしない。
5As thou knowest not what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child; even so thou knowest not the work of God who doeth all things.
5あなたは風の道を知らず、 身ごもった女の胎内で骨がどのように形づくられるかも知らない。 それと同じように、すべてを行う神のみわざを、あなたは知らない。
6In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand; for thou knowest not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
6朝に種を蒔き、 夕べにも手を休めるな。 こちらとあちらのどちらが栄えるのか、 それとも両方とも同じように良いのか、あなたには分からない。
7And the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.
7まことに、光は甘く、 太陽を見ることは目に心地よい。
8For if a man live many years, let him rejoice in them all, and remember the days of darkness, for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.
8人が多くの年月を生きるなら、そのすべてを喜べ。 しかし、闇の日々をも覚えよ。それらは多くなる。 これから来るものはすべて空しい。
9Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
9若者よ、若さを喜び、 若い日に心を楽しませよ。 自分の心の道を歩め。 自分の目の見るところに従え。 しかし、これらすべてについて、神があなたを裁かれることを知れ。
10Therefore remove vexation from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity.
10それゆえ、心から悲しみを取り除け。 肉体から悪を遠ざけよ。 若さも人生の夜明けも空しい。
