1(13-23) So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David, and Asa his son reigned in his stead; in his days the land was quiet ten years.
1アビヤはその父祖たちとともに眠り、人々は彼をダビデの町に葬った。その子アサが代わって王となった。彼の時代、国には十年間平穏が続いた。
2(14-1) And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God;
2アサはその神、主の目に良いこと、正しいことを行った。
3(14-2) for he took away the strange altars, and the high places, and broke down the pillars, and hewed down the Asherim;
3彼は異国の祭壇と高き所を取り除き、石の柱を打ち砕き、アシェラ像を切り倒し、
4(14-3) and commanded Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
4ユダに命じて、彼らの父祖の神、主を尋ね求めさせ、律法と命令を守り行わせた。
5(14-4) Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun-images; and the kingdom was quiet before him.
5彼はまた、ユダのすべての町から高き所と太陽の像を取り除いた。王国には平穏があった。
6(14-5) And he built fortified cities in Judah; for the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.
6国は平穏で、その間は戦いがなかったので、彼はユダに防備の町々を建てた。主が彼に安息を与えられたからである。
7(14-6) For he said unto Judah: 'Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars; the land is yet before us, because we have sought the LORD our God; we have sought Him, and He hath given us rest on every side.' So they built and prospered.
7彼はユダに言った。「これらの町を建て、周囲に城壁を築き、塔、門、かんぬきを造ろう。この地はなお、わたしたちの前に開かれている。わたしたちが、わたしたちの神、主を尋ね求めたからだ。わたしたちが主を尋ね求めたので、主は周囲に安息を与えてくださった。」こうして彼らは建て、栄えた。
8(14-7) And Asa had an army that bore bucklers and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bore shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand; all these were mighty men of valour.
8アサには、ユダから出た、大盾と槍を携えた三十万人の軍隊と、ベニヤミンから出た、小盾を携えて弓を引く二十八万人の軍隊があった。これらはみな力ある勇士であった。
9(14-8) And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an army of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and he came unto Mareshah.
9エチオピア人ゼラが百万人の軍隊と三百両の戦車を率いて彼らに向かって出て来て、マレシャに達した。
10(14-9) Then Asa went out to meet him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephath at Mareshah.
10アサは彼を迎え撃ちに出て行き、彼らはマレシャのツェファタの谷で戦いの陣を敷いた。
11(14-10) And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said: 'LORD, there is none beside Thee to help, between the mighty and him that hath no strength; help us, O LORD our God; for we rely on Thee, and in Thy name are we come against this multitude. Thou art the LORD our God; let not man prevail against Thee.'
11アサはその神、主に叫び求めて言った。「主よ。力ある者と力のない者との間で助けることのできる方は、あなたのほかにおられません。わたしたちの神、主よ、わたしたちを助けてください。わたしたちはあなたに拠り頼み、御名によってこの大軍に立ち向かって来たからです。主よ、あなたはわたしたちの神です。人間に、あなたに打ち勝たせないでください。」
12(14-11) So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
12そこで主はアサの前で、またユダの前でエチオピア人たちを打たれたので、エチオピア人たちは逃げ去った。
13(14-12) And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar; and there fell of the Ethiopians so that none remained alive; for they were shattered before the LORD, and before His host; and they carried away very much booty.
13アサと彼とともにいた民は、ゲラルまで彼らを追いかけた。エチオピア人は倒れ、立ち直ることができなかった。彼らが主の前と主の軍隊の前で打ち砕かれたからである。ユダの軍隊は非常に多くの戦利品を持ち帰った。
14(14-13) And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for a terror from the LORD came upon them; and they spoiled all the cities; for there was much spoil in them.
14主への恐れがゲラル周辺のすべての町を襲ったので、彼らはそれらの町を打った。彼らはすべての町を略奪した。それらの町には多くの分捕り品があったからである。
15(14-14) They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep in abundance and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.
15彼らはまた家畜を飼う者たちの天幕を襲い、多くの羊とらくだを奪い取って、エルサレムに帰った。
