1では、ユダヤ人にはどんな優位性がありますか。割礼にはどんな益がありますか。
1What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?
2あらゆる点で大いにあります。何よりもまず、彼らは神の言葉を委ねられました。
2Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.
3では、ある者たちが信じなかったとしても、それがどうしたというのでしょう。彼らの不信仰が神の真実を無にするのでしょうか。
3For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
4決してそうではありません。たとえすべての人が偽り者であっても、神は真実であるとされるべきです。こう書かれています。 「あなたが語る言葉によって義とされ、 裁きを受けるとき、勝利を得るためです。」
4God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
5しかし、私たちの不義が神の義を明らかにするのなら、何と言えばよいでしょう。怒りを下す神は不義なのでしょうか。私は人間的な言い方をしています。
5But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)
6決してそうではありません。もしそうなら、神はどうして世界を裁けるでしょうか。
6God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?
7しかし、私の偽りによって神の真実がますます明らかになり、神の栄光となるのなら、なぜ私もなお罪人として裁かれるのでしょうか。
7For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?
8それなら、「善をもたらすために悪を行おう」ということになるのでしょうか。私たちがそう言っていると中傷し、実際そう主張する者もいますが、そのような者が罪に定められるのは当然です。
8And not rather , (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.
9では、どうでしょう。私たちは彼らより優れているのでしょうか。決してそうではありません。すでに私たちが指摘したように、ユダヤ人もギリシャ人も皆、罪のもとにあります。
9What then? are we better than they ? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
10こう書かれています。 「義人はいない。 一人もいない。
10As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
11悟る者はいない。 神を求める者はいない。
11There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
12皆が道を外れ、 そろって役に立たない者となった。 善を行う者はいない。 一人としていない。」
12They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
13「彼らの喉は開いた墓。 その舌で人を欺く。」 「まむしの毒が彼らの唇の下にある。」
13Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14「彼らの口は呪いと苦々しさで満ちている。」
14Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15「彼らの足は血を流すことに速く、
15Their feet are swift to shed blood:
16その道には破滅と悲惨がある。
16Destruction and misery are in their ways:
17彼らは平和の道を知らない。」
17And the way of peace have they not known:
18「彼らの目の前に神への恐れはない。」
18There is no fear of God before their eyes.
19さて、律法が語ることはすべて、律法のもとにいる人々に語られていると私たちは知っています。それは、すべての口が閉ざされ、全世界が神の裁きのもとに置かれるためです。
19Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20律法の行いによっては、だれ一人、神の前で義とされません。律法によって罪が自覚されるからです。
20Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21しかし今、律法とは別に神の義が現されました。律法と預言者たちも、それをあかししています。
21But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22すなわち、イエス・キリストを信じる信仰による神の義が、信じるすべての人に与えられ、そのすべての人の上に及ぶのです。そこに区別はありません。
22Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23すべての人が罪を犯し、神の栄光に達していないからです。
23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24しかし、キリスト・イエスによる贖いを通し、神の恵みによって無償で義とされます。
24Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25神はキリストを、その血に対する信仰によって受ける贖罪の供え物として公に示されました。それは、神が寛容のうちに以前の罪を見過ごしてこられた間にも、ご自分の義を示すためでした。
25Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26こうして今この時にご自分の義を示し、ご自身が義であり、イエスを信じる者を義と認める方であることを明らかにされたのです。
26To declare, I say , at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
27では、誇る余地はどこにありますか。まったくありません。どのような律法によってでしょう。行いの律法によってですか。いいえ、信仰の律法によってです。
27Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
28私たちは、人は律法の行いとは別に、信仰によって義とされると結論づけます。
28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
29それとも、神はユダヤ人だけの神でしょうか。異邦人の神でもあるのではありませんか。確かに、異邦人の神でもあります。
29Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
30神はただ一人であり、割礼を受けた者を信仰によって、割礼を受けていない者を信仰を通して義と認める方だからです。
30Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
31では、私たちは信仰によって律法を無効にするのでしょうか。決してそうではありません。むしろ、律法を確立するのです。
31Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
