1From whence are wars and contentions among you? Are they not hence, from your concupiscences, which war in your members?
1สงครามและการต่อสู้ในหมู่พวกคุณมาจากไหน? ไม่ใช่มาจากความเพลิดเพลินที่ทำสงครามอยู่ในอวัยวะของพวกคุณเองหรือ?
2You covet, and have not: you kill, and envy, and can not obtain. You contend and war, and you have not, because you ask not.
2พวกคุณอยากได้แต่ไม่มี จึงฆ่า พวกคุณโลภแต่ก็ไม่ได้สิ่งที่ต้องการ จึงต่อสู้และทำสงคราม พวกคุณไม่มี เพราะไม่ได้ขอ
3You ask, and receive not; because you ask amiss: that you may consume it on your concupiscences.
3พวกคุณขอ แต่ไม่ได้รับ เพราะขอด้วยเจตนาผิด เพื่อจะเอาไปใช้กับความเพลิดเพลินของตัวเอง
4Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God.
4พวกคนที่เป็นชู้ทั้งชายและหญิง ไม่รู้หรือว่า มิตรภาพกับโลกคือการเป็นศัตรูกับพระเจ้า? เพราะฉะนั้น ใครก็ตามที่อยากเป็นมิตรกับโลก ก็ทำตัวเป็นศัตรูกับพระเจ้า
5Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you?
5หรือพวกคุณคิดว่า พระคัมภีร์กล่าวไว้อย่างไร้ความหมายว่า “พระวิญญาณผู้ทรงอยู่ในเราทรงปรารถนาด้วยความหวงแหน”?
6But he giveth greater grace. Wherefore he saith: God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6แต่พระองค์ประทานพระคุณมากยิ่งขึ้น ดังที่พระคัมภีร์กล่าวว่า “พระเจ้าทรงต่อต้านคนหยิ่งจองหอง แต่ประทานพระคุณแก่คนถ่อมตน”
7Be subject therefore to God, but resist the devil, and he will fly from you.
7ดังนั้น จงยอมตนต่อพระเจ้า จงต่อต้านมาร แล้วมันจะหนีจากพวกคุณ
8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners: and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
8จงเข้าใกล้พระเจ้า แล้วพระองค์จะเข้าใกล้พวกคุณ คนบาปทั้งหลาย จงชำระมือให้สะอาด คนที่ใจแบ่งเป็นสองฝ่าย จงชำระใจให้บริสุทธิ์
9Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into sorrow.
9จงทุกข์ใจ โศกเศร้า และร้องไห้ ให้เสียงหัวเราะกลายเป็นความโศกเศร้า และความยินดีกลายเป็นความหม่นหมอง
10Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
10จงถ่อมตัวลงต่อหน้าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า แล้วพระองค์จะยกพวกคุณขึ้น
11Detract not one another, my brethren. He that detracteth his brother, or he that judgeth his brother, detracteth the law, and judgeth the law. But if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
11พี่น้อง อย่าพูดให้ร้ายกัน คนที่พูดให้ร้ายหรือตัดสินพี่น้อง ก็พูดให้ร้ายและตัดสินธรรมบัญญัติ แต่ถ้าคุณตัดสินธรรมบัญญัติ คุณก็ไม่ใช่ผู้ทำตามธรรมบัญญัติ แต่เป็นผู้พิพากษา
12There is one lawgiver, and judge, that is able to destroy and to deliver.
12ผู้ให้ธรรมบัญญัติมีเพียงองค์เดียว คือพระองค์ผู้สามารถช่วยให้รอดและทำลาย แต่คุณเป็นใครจึงตัดสินคนอื่น?
13But who art thou that judgest thy neighbour? Behold, now you that say: Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and there we will spend a year, and will traffic, and make our gain.
13เอาละ พวกคุณที่พูดว่า “วันนี้หรือพรุ่งนี้ เราจะไปเมืองนี้ อยู่ที่นั่นหนึ่งปี ทำการค้า และหากำไร”
14Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow.
14ทั้งที่พวกคุณไม่รู้ว่า พรุ่งนี้ชีวิตจะเป็นอย่างไร ชีวิตของพวกคุณคืออะไร? พวกคุณเป็นเพียงไอหมอกที่ปรากฏอยู่ชั่วครู่ แล้วก็จางหายไป
15For what is your life? It is a vapour which appeareth for a little while, and afterwards shall vanish away. For that you should say: If the Lord will, and if we shall live, we will do this or that.
15ที่จริงควรพูดว่า “ถ้าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงประสงค์ เราก็จะมีชีวิตอยู่ และจะทำสิ่งนี้หรือสิ่งนั้น”
16But now you rejoice in your arrogancies. All such rejoicing is wicked.
16แต่ตอนนี้กลับโอ้อวดด้วยความทะนงของตน การโอ้อวดแบบนี้ทั้งหมดเป็นความชั่ว
17To him therefore who knoweth to do good, and doth it not, to him it is sin.
17เพราะฉะนั้น คนที่รู้ว่าควรทำดี แต่ไม่ทำ สำหรับเขาแล้วนั่นคือบาป
