1(39-1) For the Leader, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. (39-2) I said: 'I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue; I will keep a curb upon my mouth, while the wicked is before me.'
1I IHO ia au, e malama au i ko'u hele ana, O hana hewa au me kuu alelo: E malama au i kuu waha me ka paawaha, I ka wa o ka mea lawehala imua o'u.
2(39-3) I was dumb with silence; I held my peace, had no comfort; and my pain was held in check.
2Ua mumule loa au me ka leo ole, Aole au i pane aku, aole i ka maikai; A ua hoola hou ia kuu kaumaha.
3(39-4) My heart waxed hot within me; while I was musing, the fire kindled; then spoke I with my tongue:
3Wela mai kuu naau maloko o'u; I kuu noonoo ana aa iho la ke ahi; Olelo aku la hoi au me kuu alelo,
4(39-5) 'LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; let me know how short-lived I am.
4E hoiko mai ia'u, o Iehova, i ko'u hopena; A me ke ano o ka ana ana o kuu mau la, I ike au i ko'u palupalu ana.
5(39-6) Behold, Thou hast made my days as hand-breadths; and mine age is as nothing before Thee; surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. Selah
5Eia hoi, ua hoohalike oe i kuu mau la me ka palahalaha o ka peahilima; A me kuu mau makahiki me he mea ole la imua ou; He oiaio, he hanu wale no kela kanaka keia kanaka i kona hoonoho paa ia. Sila.
6(39-7) Surely man walketh as a mere semblance; surely for vanity they are in turmoil; he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
6Oiaio, ke hele nei kela kanaka keia kanaka me he aka oiaio ole la: He oiaio, ma ka mea lapuwale i pihoihoi ai lakou: Hoahu ae la ia i ka waiwai aole hoi i ike i ka mea nana ia e ohi.
7(39-8) And now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope, it is in Thee.
7Ano hoi, heaha ka'u e kali nei, e ka Haku? O ko'u manao lana aia no maluna o'u.
8(39-9) Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the reproach of the base.
8E hookaawale aku i ko'u mau hewa a pau; Mai noho a hoolilo ia'u i mea e hoinoin'i e ka poe naaupo.
9(39-10) I am dumb, I open not my mouth; because Thou hast done it.
9Ua mumule loa au, aole hoi o ekemu kuu waha; No ka mea, nau no i hana mai.
10(39-11) Remove Thy stroke from off me; I am consumed by the blow of Thy hand.
10E lawe aku i kou hahau ana mai o'u aku nei: Ua pau e au i ka hahau ana mai o kou lima.
11(39-12) With rebukes dost Thou chasten man for iniquity, and like a moth Thou makest his beauty to consume away; surely every man is vanity. Selah
11Aia hahau oe i ke kanaka me ka papa ana mai no kona hewa, Ua hoopau oe i kona nani me he mu la; Oiaio, he hanu wale no na kanaka a pau. Sila.
12(39-13) Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; keep not silence at my tears; for I am a stranger with Thee, a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
12E hoolohe mai i ka'u pule, e Iehova, E haliu mai i ka pepeiao i ko'u kahea ana; Mai noho a hookuli i ko'u waimaka: No ka mea, he malihini au me oe, He mea noho iki e like me ko'u mau makua a pau.
13(39-14) Look away from me, that I may take comfort, before I go hence, and be no more.'
13E hookoe mai ia'u, i loaa hou mai ka ikaika ia'u. Mamua o ko'u hele ana aku, a e ole loa hoi.
