1第七の月に、エリシャマの孫でネタヌヤの子であるイシュマエルが、十人の者とともに、ミツパにいるアヒカムの子ゲダルヤのもとへ来た。イシュマエルは王族で、王の高官の一人であった。彼らはミツパでともに食事をした。
1Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and one of the chief officers of the king, and ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and there they did eat bread together in Mizpah.
2その時、ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルと、彼とともにいた十人の者は立ち上がり、シャファンの孫でアヒカムの子であるゲダルヤを剣で打ち殺した。ゲダルヤは、バビロンの王がこの地の総督に任命した者であった。
2Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men that were with him, and smote Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword, and slew him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.
3イシュマエルはまた、ミツパでゲダルヤとともにいたすべてのユダヤ人と、そこにいたカルデア人の兵士たちも殺した。
3Ishmael also slew all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, even the men of war.
4彼がゲダルヤを殺した翌日、まだだれもそのことを知らない時、
4And it came to pass the second day after he had slain Gedaliah, and no man knew it,
5シェケム、シロ、サマリアから八十人の男たちがやって来た。彼らはひげをそり、衣を引き裂き、身を傷つけ、主の家に献げる穀物のささげ物と乳香を手にしていた。
5that there came certain men from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even fourscore men, having their beards shaven and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, with meal-offerings and frankincense in their hand to bring them to the house of the LORD.
6ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルは、彼らを迎えるためにミツパから出て行き、歩きながら泣き続けた。彼らに会うと、「アヒカムの子ゲダルヤのところへ来てください」と言った。
6And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went; and it came to pass, as he met them, he said unto them: 'Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.'
7彼らが町の中央まで来ると、ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルは、彼とともにいた者たちと彼らを殺し、穴の中に投げ込んだ。
7And it was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he, and the men that were with him.
8しかし、その中の十人がイシュマエルに言った。「私たちを殺さないでください。畑に小麦、大麦、油、蜜を隠してあります。」 そこで彼は手を止め、彼らを仲間たちとともに殺さなかった。
8But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael: 'Slay us not; for we have stores hidden in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey.' So he forbore, and slew them not among their brethren.
9イシュマエルが、ゲダルヤとともに殺した人々の死体を投げ込んだ穴は、かつてアサ王がイスラエルの王バシャを恐れて造ったものであった。ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルは、それを殺された者たちで満たした。
9Now the pit wherein Ishmael cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had slain by the side of Gedaliah was that which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasa king of Israel; the same Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled with them that were slain.
10それからイシュマエルは、ミツパに残っていたすべての民、すなわち王の娘たちと、親衛隊長ネブザラダンがアヒカムの子ゲダルヤに委ねていた、ミツパに残るすべての民を捕らえた。ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルは彼らを捕虜として連れ去り、アンモン人の地へ渡ろうと出発した。
10Then Ishmael carried away captive all the residue of the people that were in Mizpah, even the king's daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the children of Ammon.
11カレアの子ヨハナンと、彼とともにいた軍隊のすべての隊長たちは、ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルが行ったすべての悪を聞くと、
11But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,
12すべての部下を率いて、ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルと戦うために出て行き、ギブオンにある大きな池のそばで彼を見つけた。
12then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon.
13イシュマエルとともにいたすべての民は、カレアの子ヨハナンと、彼とともにいた軍隊のすべての隊長たちを見ると喜んだ。
13Now it came to pass, that when all the people that were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, then they were glad.
14イシュマエルがミツパから捕らえて連れ去ったすべての民は向きを変えて戻り、カレアの子ヨハナンのもとへ行った。
14So all the people that Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah cast about and returned, and went unto Johanan the son of Kareah.
15しかし、ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルは八人の者とともにヨハナンから逃れ、アンモン人のもとへ行った。
15But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the children of Ammon.
16そこでカレアの子ヨハナンと、彼とともにいた軍隊のすべての隊長たちは、ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルがアヒカムの子ゲダルヤを殺した後、ミツパから捕らえて連れ去った民の残りの者を、彼の手から取り戻した。ヨハナンがギブオンから連れ戻したのは、兵士たち、女たち、子どもたち、宦官たちであった。
16Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after that he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the men, even the men of war, and the women, and the children, and the officers, whom he had brought back from Gibeon;
17彼らは出発し、ベツレヘムの近くにあるゲルテ・キムハムに滞在して、エジプトへ入ろうとした。
17and they departed, and dwelt in Geruth Chimham, which is by Beth-lehem, to go to enter into Egypt,
18彼らがカルデア人を恐れたからである。ネタヌヤの子イシュマエルが、バビロンの王によってこの地の総督に任命されたアヒカムの子ゲダルヤを殺したためであった。
18because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor over the land.
