1こうして王とハマンは、王妃エステルの祝宴に臨んだ。
1So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.
2二日目のぶどう酒の宴でも、王はエステルに言った。「王妃エステルよ、願いは何か。かなえてやろう。求めは何か。国の半分でも、そのとおりにしよう。」
2And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine: 'Whatever thy petition, queen Esther, it shall be granted thee; and whatever thy request, even to the half of the kingdom, it shall be performed.'
3王妃エステルは答えた。「王よ、もし私があなたの好意を受け、王がよしとされるなら、私の願いとして私の命をお与えください。私の求めとして、私の民をお救いください。
3Then Esther the queen answered and said: 'If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request;
4私も私の民も、滅ぼされ、殺され、絶やされるために売られたからです。もし男女の奴隷として売られただけなら、私は黙っていたでしょう。たとえ敵が王の損失を償えないとしてもです。」
4for we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my peace, for the adversary is not worthy that the king be endamaged.'
5アハシュエロス王は王妃エステルに尋ねた。「それをしようと大胆にも企てた者は誰だ。どこにいるのか。」
5Then spoke the king Ahasuerus and said unto Esther the queen: 'Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?'
6エステルは言った。「その敵、その仇は、この悪しきハマンです。」ハマンは王と王妃の前で恐れおののいた。
6And Esther said: 'An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman.' Then Haman was terrified before the king and the queen.
7王は怒りに燃え、ぶどう酒の宴から立ち上がって宮殿の園へ出て行った。ハマンは王妃エステルに命乞いをしようと残った。王が自分を滅ぼすと決めたのを悟ったからである。
7And the king arose in his wrath from the banquet of wine and went into the palace garden; but Haman remained to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.
8王が宮殿の園から宴の広間へ戻ると、ハマンはエステルのいる寝椅子に身を投げ伏していた。王は言った。「この家で、しかも私の前で、王妃を辱めようとするのか。」王がこの言葉を発すると、人々はハマンの顔を覆った。
8Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the couch whereon Esther was. Then said the king: 'Will he even force the queen before me in the house?' As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
9王に仕える宦官の一人ハルボナが言った。「ご覧ください。王のために功を立てたモルデカイを掛けようとハマンが作った、高さ五十キュビットの木柱が、ハマンの家に立っています。」王は言った。「ハマンをそれに掛けよ。」
9Then said Harbonah, one of the chamberlains that were before the king: 'Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman hath made for Mordecai, who spoke good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman.' And the king said: 'Hang him thereon.'
10こうして人々は、ハマンがモルデカイのために立てた木柱にハマンを掛けた。すると王の怒りは静まった。
10So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath assuaged.
