1レハブアムがエルサレムに着いたとき、彼はユダとベニヤミンの家から、戦士であるえり抜きの者十八万人を集め、王権をレハブアムに取り戻すためにイスラエルと戦おうとした。
1And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, a hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, that were warriors, to fight against Israel, to bring the kingdom back to Rehoboam.
2しかし、主の言葉が神の人シェマヤに臨んだ。
2But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying:
3「ユダの王、ソロモンの子レハブアム、およびユダとベニヤミンにいる全イスラエルに告げて言いなさい。
3'Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying:
4『主はこう言われる。「あなたがたは上って行ってはならない。また兄弟たちと戦ってはならない。それぞれ自分の家へ帰れ。この事はわたしから出たことだからである。」』」そこで彼らは主の言葉に聞き従い、ヤロブアムに向かって行くのをやめて帰った。
4Thus saith the LORD: Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren; return every man to his house, for this thing is of Me.' So they hearkened unto the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam.
5レハブアムはエルサレムに住み、ユダに防備の町々を建てた。
5And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defence in Judah.
6彼はベツレヘム、エタム、テコア、
6He built even Beth-lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,
7ベテ・ツル、ソコ、アドラム、
7and Beth-zur, and Soco, and Adullam,
8ガテ、マレシャ、ジフ、
8and Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,
9アドライム、ラキシュ、アゼカ、
9and Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,
10ツォラ、アヤロン、およびヘブロンを建てた。これらはユダとベニヤミンにある防備の町である。
10and Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities.
11彼は要害を堅固にし、そこに長たちを置き、食物と油とぶどう酒の蓄えを置いた。
11And he fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and oil and wine.
12また、すべての町に盾と槍を置き、それらを非常に堅固にした。ユダとベニヤミンは彼の支配下にあった。
12And in every city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong. And Judah and Benjamin adhered to him.
13全イスラエルにいた祭司たちとレビ人たちは、各地から来て彼の側についた。
13And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel presented themselves to him out of all their border.
14レビ人たちは自分たちの放牧地と所有地を捨てて、ユダとエルサレムに来た。ヤロブアムとその子らが彼らを祭司職から追放し、主に仕えることを許さなかったからである。
14For the Levites left their open land and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem; for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest's office unto the LORD;
15ヤロブアムは、高き所のため、また彼が造った雄ヤギの偶像と子牛の偶像のために、自分で祭司たちを任命していた。
15and he appointed him priests for the high places, and for the satyrs, and for the calves which he had made.
16レビ人たちの後に続いて、イスラエルのすべての部族の中から、イスラエルの神、主を尋ね求めることに心を定めた者たちが、彼らの父祖の神、主にいけにえをささげるためにエルサレムに来た。
16And after them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek the LORD, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD, the God of their fathers.
17彼らはユダ王国を支え、ソロモンの子レハブアムを三年間強くした。彼らは三年の間、ダビデとソロモンの道を歩んだからである。
17So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years; for they walked three years in the way of David and Solomon.
18レハブアムは、ダビデの子エリモトと、エッサイの子エリアブの娘アビハイルとの娘であるマハラテを妻にめとった。
18And Rehoboam took him a wife, Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David, and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;
19彼女は彼にエウシュ、シェマルヤ、ザハムという息子たちを産んだ。
19and she bore him sons: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham.
20彼女の後に、彼はアブサロムの娘マアカをめとった。彼女は彼にアビヤ、アタイ、ジザ、シェロミテを産んだ。
20And after her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom; and she bore him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
21レハブアムは、すべての妻やそばめたちよりも、アブサロムの娘マアカを愛した（彼は十八人の妻と六十人のそばめをめとり、二十八人の息子と六十人の娘の父となった）。
21And Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines — for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines, and begot twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters.
22レハブアムはマアカの子アビヤを長とし、その兄弟たちの間の君とした。彼を王にしようと意図していたからである。
22And Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah to be chief, even the prince among his brethren; for he was minded to make him king.
23彼は賢明に行動し、息子たちをユダとベニヤミン全土の防備の町々に分散させ、豊かな食糧を与え、多くの妻を迎えさせた。
23And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fortified city; and he gave them victual in abundance. And he sought for them many wives.
