1Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called, and should be the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth not us, because it knew not him.
1你看父賜給我們是何等的慈愛，使我們得稱為上帝的兒女；我們也真是他的兒女。世人所以不認識我們，是因未曾認識他。
2Dearly beloved, we are now the sons of God; and it hath not yet appeared what we shall be. We know, that, when he shall appear, we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is.
2親愛的 弟兄 啊，我們現在是上帝的兒女，將來如何，還未顯明；但我們知道，主若顯現，我們必要像他，因為必得見他的真體。
3And every one that hath this hope in him, sanctifieth himself, as he also is holy.
3凡向他有這指望的，就潔淨自己，像他潔淨一樣。
4Whosoever committeth sin committeth also iniquity; and sin is iniquity.
4凡犯罪的，就是違背律法；違背律法就是罪。
5And you know that he appeared to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin.
5你們知道主曾顯現，是要除掉人的罪，在他並沒有罪。
6Whosoever abideth in him, sinneth not; and whosoever sinneth, hath not seen him, nor known him.
6凡住在他裏面的，就不犯罪；凡犯罪的，是未曾看見他，也未曾認識他。
7Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doth justice is just, even as he is just.
7小子們哪，不要被人誘惑。行義的才是義人，正如主是義的一樣。
8He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
8犯罪的是屬魔鬼，因為魔鬼從起初就犯罪。上帝的兒子顯現出來，為要除滅魔鬼的作為。
9Whosoever is born of God, committeth not sin: for his seed abideth in him, and he can not sin, because he is born of God.
9凡從上帝生的，就不犯罪，因上帝的道存在他心裏；他也不能犯罪，因為他是由上帝生的。
10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever is not just, is not of God, nor he that loveth not his brother.
10從此就顯出誰是上帝的兒女，誰是魔鬼的兒女。凡不行義的就不屬上帝，不愛弟兄的也是如此。
11For this is the declaration, which you have heard from the beginning, that you should love one another.
11我們應當彼此相愛。這就是你們從起初所聽見的命令。
12Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one, and killed his brother. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother’s just.
12不可像 該隱 ；他是屬那惡者，殺了他的兄弟。為甚麼殺了他呢？因自己的行為是惡的，兄弟的行為是善的。
13Wonder not, brethren, if the world hate you.
13弟兄們，世人若恨你們，不要以為希奇。
14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not, abideth in death.
14我們因為愛弟兄，就曉得是已經出死入生了。沒有愛心的，仍住在死中。
15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in himself.
15凡恨他弟兄的，就是殺人的；你們曉得凡殺人的，沒有永生存在他裏面。
16In this we have known the charity of God, because he hath laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
16主為我們捨命，我們從此就知道何為愛；我們也當為弟兄捨命。
17He that hath the substance of this world, and shall see his brother in need, and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him?
17凡有世上財物的，看見弟兄窮乏，卻塞住憐恤的心，愛上帝的心怎能存在他裏面呢？
18My little children, let us not love in word, nor in tongue, but in deed, and in truth.
18小子們哪，我們相愛，不要只在言語和舌頭上，總要在行為和誠實上。
19In this we know that we are of the truth: and in his sight shall persuade our hearts.
19從此就知道我們是屬真理的，並且我們的心在上帝面前可以安穩。
20For if our heart reprehend us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
20我們的心若責備我們，上帝比我們的心大，一切事沒有不知道的。
21Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God:
21親愛的 弟兄 啊，我們的心若不責備我們，就可以向上帝坦然無懼了。
22And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.
22並且我們一切所求的，就從他得着；因為我們遵守他的命令，行他所喜悅的事。
23And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ: and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us.
23上帝的命令就是叫我們信他兒子耶穌基督的名，且照他所賜給我們的命令彼此相愛。
24And he that keepeth his commandments, abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
24遵守上帝命令的，就住在上帝裏面，上帝也住在他裏面。我們所以知道上帝住在我們裏面是因他所賜給我們的 聖 靈。
