1LORD, my God, I take refuge in you. Save me from all those who pursue me, and deliver me,
1Een klaaglied van David, dat hij Jahweh toezong naar aanleiding van Koesj, den Benjamiet. Jahweh, mijn God, tot U neem ik mijn toevlucht; Help mij, en verlos mij van al mijn vervolgers,
2lest they tear apart my soul like a lion, ripping it in pieces, while there is no one to deliver.
2Opdat ze mij niet als leeuwen verscheuren, En wegslepen, reddeloos verloren.
3LORD, my God, if I have done this, if there is iniquity in my hands,
3Jahweh, mijn God, als ik dat zelf heb gedaan, Als er onrecht kleeft aan mijn handen,
4if I have rewarded evil to him who was at peace with me (yes, I have plundered him who without cause was my adversary),
4Als ik kwaad heb vergolden hem, die het mij aandeed, Heb uitgeplunderd, die mij zonder reden bestreed:
5let the enemy pursue my soul, and overtake it; yes, let him tread my life down to the earth, and lay my glory in the dust. Selah.
5Laat dan de vijand mij achtervolgen, Totdat hij me grijpt; Mijn leven op de grond vertrappen, Mijn eer vergooien in het slijk.
6Arise, LORD, in your anger. Lift up yourself against the rage of my adversaries. Awake for me. You have commanded judgment.
6Maar nu, o Jahweh, sta op in uw toorn, Verhef U tegen mijn grimmigen vijand; Waak op tot het oordeel, dat Gij zelf hebt gewild,
7Let the congregation of the peoples surround you. Rule over them on high.
7Laat de scharen der volken U omringen! Span de vierschaar over haar in den hoge,
8The LORD administers judgment to the peoples. Judge me, LORD, according to my righteousness, and to my integrity that is in me.
8Als rechter der volken, o Jahweh; Doe mij recht, Jahweh, naar mijn gerechtigheid En naar de onschuld mijns harten.
9Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous; their minds and hearts are searched by the righteous God.
9Maak een einde aan de boosheid der zondaars, Maar laat de rechtvaardige blijven bestaan! Gij zijt het, die harten en nieren doorgrondt, Rechtvaardige God!
10My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart.
10Het is God, die mijn schild draagt, Die redt de oprechten van hart;
11God is a righteous judge, yes, a God who has indignation every day.
11Maar ook een rechtvaardig rechter is God, Een God, wiens gramschap voortdurend blijft dreigen.
12If a man doesn’t repent, he will sharpen his sword; he has bent and strung his bow.
12Bekeert men zich niet, dan scherpt Hij zijn zwaard, Dan spant en richt Hij zijn boog,
13He has also prepared for himself the instruments of death. He makes ready his flaming arrows.
13Houdt moordende wapens gereed, Maakt zijn pijlen als brandende schichten.
14Behold, he travails with iniquity. Yes, he has conceived mischief, and brought out falsehood.
14Ziet, die met valsheid bevrucht is en zwanger van onheil, Baart enkel ontgoocheling;
15He has dug a hole, and has fallen into the pit which he made.
15Die een put graaft en uitdiept, Valt in de kuil, die hij delft.
16The trouble he causes shall return to his own head. His violence shall come down on the crown of his own head.
16Zo keert zijn onrecht op zijn eigen hoofd terug, Valt op eigen schedel zijn misdaad!
17I will give thanks to the LORD according to his righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.
17Dan zal ik Jahweh om zijn gerechtigheid prijzen, De naam van Jahweh, den Allerhoogste, bezingen!
