1And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
1イスラエルの子ら、すなわち全会衆は第一の月にツィンの荒野に着き、民はカデシュにとどまった。ミリアムはそこで死に、そこに葬られた。
2And there was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
2会衆には水がなかった。そこで彼らはモーセとアロンに逆らって集まった。
3And the people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying: 'Would that we had perished when our brethren perished before the LORD!
3民はモーセと争って言った。「私たちの兄弟たちが主の前で死んだとき、私たちも死んでいればよかった！
4And why have ye brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, to die there, we and our cattle?
4なぜ主の集会をこの荒野に連れて来て、私たちも家畜もここで死なせようとするのか。
5And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.'
5なぜ私たちをエジプトから上らせて、こんなひどい場所に連れて来たのか。ここには穀物も、いちじくも、ぶどうも、ざくろもない。そのうえ、飲み水さえない。」
6And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.
6モーセとアロンは集会の前から会見の天幕の入口に行き、ひれ伏した。すると、主の栄光が彼らに現れた。
7And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
7主はモーセに告げられた。
8'Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink.'
8「杖を取りなさい。あなたと兄弟アロンは会衆を集め、彼らの前で岩に語りかけ、水を出させなさい。こうして岩から水を出し、会衆とその家畜に飲ませなさい。」
9And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He commanded him.
9モーセは命じられたとおり、主の前から杖を取った。
10And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them: 'Hear now, ye rebels; are we to bring you forth water out of this rock?'
10モーセとアロンは会衆を岩の前に集めた。モーセは言った。「反逆する者たちよ、聞け。この岩から、私たちがあなたがたのために水を出せというのか。」
11And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.
11モーセは手を上げ、杖で岩を二度打った。すると水が豊かに湧き出し、会衆も家畜も飲んだ。
12And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: 'Because ye believed not in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.'
12主はモーセとアロンに言われた。「あなたがたはわたしを信じず、イスラエルの子らの前でわたしを聖なる者として示さなかった。それゆえ、あなたがたがこの集会を、わたしが彼らに与える地へ導き入れることはない。」
13These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and He was sanctified in them.
13これがメリバ の水である。イスラエルの子らが主と争い、主が彼らの間で御自分を聖なる者として示されたからである。
14And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom: 'Thus saith thy brother Israel: Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us;
14モーセはカデシュからエドムの王に使者を遣わして言った。 「あなたの兄弟イスラエルはこう申します。『あなたは、私たちが経験したすべての苦難をご存じです。
15how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers;
15私たちの父祖はエジプトに下り、私たちは長い間そこに住みました。エジプト人は私たちと父祖を虐げました。
16and when we cried unto the LORD, He heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt; and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border.
16私たちが主に叫び求めると、主は声を聞き、御使いを遣わして、エジプトから導き出してくださいました。今、私たちはあなたの領土の境にある町カデシュにおります。
17Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy land; we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the king's highway, we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy border.'
17どうか、あなたの国を通らせてください。畑やぶどう園には入らず、井戸の水も飲みません。あなたの領土を通り過ぎるまで、王の道を進み、右にも左にもそれません。』」
18And Edom said unto him: 'Thou shalt not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against thee.'
18エドムは答えた。「私の国を通ってはならない。さもないと、剣をもって迎え撃つ。」
19And the children of Israel said unto him: 'We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of thy water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price thereof; let me only pass through on my feet; there is no hurt.'
19イスラエルの子らは言った。「大通りを進みます。私たちや家畜があなたの水を飲むなら、その代価を払います。ただ歩いて通らせていただくだけです。」
20And he said: 'Thou shalt not pass through.' And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
20彼は言った。「通ってはならない。」そしてエドムは大軍と強力な軍勢を率いて、迎え撃つために出て来た。
21Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; wherefore Israel turned away from him.
21こうしてエドムが領土を通ることを拒んだので、イスラエルはそこから離れた。
22And they journeyed from Kadesh; and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came unto mount Hor.
22イスラエルの子ら、すなわち全会衆はカデシュから旅立ち、ホル山に着いた。
23And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying:
23主はエドムの地の境にあるホル山で、モーセとアロンに告げられた。
24'Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against My word at the waters of Meribah.
24「アロンはその民に加えられる。メリバの水であなたがたがわたしの言葉に背いたので、彼はわたしがイスラエルの子らに与える地に入ることはない。
25Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor.
25アロンとその子エルアザルを連れて、ホル山に登りなさい。
26And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.'
26アロンの衣を脱がせ、その子エルアザルに着せなさい。アロンはそこでその民に加えられ、死ぬ。」
27And Moses did as the LORD commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
27モーセは主が命じられたとおりに行った。彼らは全会衆の前でホル山に登った。
28And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount; and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
28モーセはアロンの衣を脱がせ、それを彼の子エルアザルに着せた。アロンはそこで、山の頂で死んだ。そしてモーセとエルアザルは山から下りた。
29And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
29全会衆はアロンが死んだのを見たとき、イスラエルの全家はアロンのために三十日間泣き悲しんだ。
