1Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying: 'There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.'
1ชายอิสราเอลได้สาบานไว้ที่มิสปาห์ว่า “พวกเราจะไม่มีใครยกบุตรสาวให้ชายเบนยามินเป็นภรรยา”
2And the people came to Beth-el, and sat there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore.
2ประชาชนไปเบธเอลและนั่งอยู่ต่อหน้าพระเจ้าจนถึงเย็น พวกเขาส่งเสียงร้องไห้อย่างหนัก
3And they said: 'O LORD, the God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Israel?'
3พวกเขากล่าวว่า “ข้าแต่พระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอล ทำไมเรื่องนี้จึงเกิดขึ้นในอิสราเอล วันนี้อิสราเอลจึงขาดไปหนึ่งเผ่า?”
4And it came to pass on the morrow that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.
4วันรุ่งขึ้น ประชาชนตื่นแต่เช้า สร้างแท่นบูชาที่นั่น และถวายเครื่องเผาบูชากับเครื่องสันติบูชา
5And the children of Israel said: 'Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up in the assembly unto the LORD?' For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up unto the LORD to Mizpah, saying: 'He shall surely be put to death.'
5ชาวอิสราเอลถามว่า “มีใครจากเผ่าใดในอิสราเอลที่ไม่ได้ขึ้นมาร่วมชุมนุมต่อหน้าพระยาห์เวห์?” เพราะพวกเขาได้สาบานอย่างจริงจังเกี่ยวกับผู้ที่ไม่ได้ขึ้นมาหาพระยาห์เวห์ที่มิสปาห์ว่า “ผู้นั้นต้องตายอย่างแน่นอน”
6And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said: 'There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
6ชาวอิสราเอลโศกเศร้าเรื่องเบนยามินพี่น้องของตนและกล่าวว่า “วันนี้เผ่าหนึ่งถูกตัดออกจากอิสราเอล
7How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?'
7เราจะหาภรรยาให้คนที่เหลืออยู่ได้อย่างไร ในเมื่อเราสาบานต่อพระยาห์เวห์ว่าจะไม่ยกบุตรสาวของเราให้เป็นภรรยา?”
8And they said: 'What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto the LORD to Mizpah?' And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.
8พวกเขาถามว่า “มีเผ่าใดในอิสราเอลที่ไม่ได้ขึ้นมาหาพระยาห์เวห์ที่มิสปาห์?” ไม่มีใครจากยาเบชกิเลอาดมายังค่ายเพื่อร่วมชุมนุมเลย
9For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.
9เมื่อนับประชาชน ก็ไม่พบชาวยาเบชกิเลอาดอยู่ที่นั่นแม้แต่คนเดียว
10And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying: 'Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.
10ชุมนุมชนจึงส่งนักรบผู้กล้าหาญที่สุดหนึ่งหมื่นสองพันคนไปที่นั่น และบัญชาว่า “จงไปสังหารชาวยาเบชกิเลอาดด้วยดาบ รวมทั้งผู้หญิงกับเด็กเล็ก
11And this is the thing that ye shall do: ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.'
11จงทำดังนี้ จงฆ่าผู้ชายทุกคนและผู้หญิงทุกคนที่เคยร่วมหลับนอนกับผู้ชายให้หมดสิ้น”
12And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
12พวกเขาพบหญิงสาวพรหมจารีสี่ร้อยคนในหมู่ชาวยาเบชกิเลอาด ซึ่งยังไม่เคยร่วมหลับนอนกับผู้ชาย แล้วพาไปยังค่ายที่ชิโลห์ในแผ่นดินคานาอัน
13And the whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace unto them.
13ชุมนุมชนทั้งหมดส่งคนไปพูดกับชาวเบนยามินที่ศิลาริมโมน และประกาศสันติแก่พวกเขา
14And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; and yet so they sufficed them not.
14เวลานั้นเบนยามินกลับมา และชาวอิสราเอลยกหญิงจากยาเบชกิเลอาดที่ไว้ชีวิตให้ แต่ยังมีไม่พอ
15And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
15ประชาชนโศกเศร้าเรื่องเบนยามิน เพราะพระยาห์เวห์ทรงทำให้เผ่าต่างๆ ของอิสราเอลขาดไปเผ่าหนึ่ง
16Then the elders of the congregation said: 'How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?'
16บรรดาผู้อาวุโสของชุมนุมชนถามว่า “เราจะหาภรรยาให้คนที่เหลืออยู่ได้อย่างไร ในเมื่อผู้หญิงของเบนยามินถูกทำลายไปหมดแล้ว?”
17And they said: 'They that are escaped must be as an inheritance for Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel.
17พวกเขากล่าวว่า “ผู้หลบหนีจากเบนยามินต้องมีมรดก เพื่อเผ่าหนึ่งจะไม่ถูกลบออกจากอิสราเอล
18Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters.' For the children of Israel had sworn, saying: 'Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.'
18แต่เราจะยกบุตรสาวของเราให้เป็นภรรยาไม่ได้ เพราะชาวอิสราเอลได้สาบานว่า ‘ผู้ใดยกภรรยาให้เบนยามิน ผู้นั้นต้องถูกสาปแช่ง’”
19And they said: 'Behold, there is the feast of the LORD from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.'
19แล้วพวกเขากล่าวว่า “มีเทศกาลของพระยาห์เวห์ทุกปีที่ชิโลห์ ซึ่งอยู่ทางเหนือของเบธเอล อยู่ด้านตะวันออกของถนนหลวงที่ขึ้นจากเบธเอลไปเชเคม และอยู่ทางใต้ของเลโบนาห์”
20And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying: 'Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
20พวกเขาบัญชาชาวเบนยามินว่า “ไปซุ่มอยู่ในสวนองุ่น
21and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
21คอยดูให้ดี เมื่อบุตรสาวชาวชิโลห์ออกมาเต้นรำเป็นหมู่ ให้พวกเจ้าออกจากสวนองุ่น แต่ละคนฉุดหญิงชาวชิโลห์คนหนึ่งไปเป็นภรรยา แล้วไปยังแผ่นดินเบนยามิน
22And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to strive with us, that we will say unto them: Grant them graciously unto us; because we took not for each man of them his wife in battle; neither did ye give them unto them, that ye should now be guilty.'
22เมื่อบิดาหรือพี่น้องชายของพวกนางมาร้องทุกข์ต่อเรา เราจะพูดกับพวกเขาว่า ‘โปรดเมตตายกพวกนางให้แก่เรา เพราะในสงครามเราไม่ได้ชิงตัวหญิงมาให้ชายแต่ละคนเป็นภรรยา และพวกท่านก็ไม่ได้เป็นผู้ยกพวกนางให้ มิฉะนั้นเวลานี้พวกท่านคงมีความผิด’”
23And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they carried off; and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them.
23ชาวเบนยามินทำตาม พวกเขาฉุดหญิงที่ออกมาเต้นรำไปเป็นภรรยาตามจำนวนของตน แล้วกลับไปยังมรดก สร้างเมืองขึ้นใหม่และอาศัยอยู่ในนั้น
24And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
24เวลานั้นชาวอิสราเอลแยกย้ายจากที่นั่น ทุกคนกลับไปยังเผ่าและตระกูลของตน ต่างคนต่างกลับไปยังมรดกของตน
25In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
25ในสมัยนั้นอิสราเอลไม่มีกษัตริย์ ทุกคนต่างทำสิ่งที่เห็นว่าถูกต้องในสายตาของตนเอง
