1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah.
1เยฟธาห์ชาวกิเลอาดเป็นนักรบผู้กล้าหาญ เขาเป็นบุตรของหญิงโสเภณี กิเลอาดเป็นบิดาของเยฟธาห์
2And Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him: 'Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.'
2ภรรยาของกิเลอาดคลอดบุตรชายหลายคน เมื่อบุตรเหล่านั้นโตขึ้น พวกเขาขับไล่เยฟธาห์และพูดว่า “เจ้าจะไม่มีส่วนมรดกในตระกูลของบิดาเรา เพราะเจ้าเป็นบุตรของหญิงอื่น”
3Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

4And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
4ต่อมาไม่นาน ชาวอัมโมนทำสงครามกับอิสราเอล
5And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob.
5เมื่อชาวอัมโมนทำสงครามกับอิสราเอล บรรดาผู้อาวุโสแห่งกิเลอาดไปรับเยฟธาห์จากแผ่นดินโทบ
6And they said unto Jephthah: 'Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.'
6พวกเขาพูดกับเยฟธาห์ว่า “มาเป็นแม่ทัพของเราเถอะ เพื่อเราจะได้สู้กับชาวอัมโมน”
7And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead: 'Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'
7เยฟธาห์ตอบบรรดาผู้อาวุโสแห่งกิเลอาดว่า “พวกท่านเกลียดข้าพเจ้าและขับไล่ข้าพเจ้าออกจากบ้านบิดาไม่ใช่หรือ? แล้วทำไมตอนนี้เมื่อพวกท่านตกทุกข์จึงมาหาข้าพเจ้า?”
8And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah: 'Therefore are we returned to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon, and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.'
8บรรดาผู้อาวุโสตอบว่า “นี่แหละเป็นเหตุให้ตอนนี้เรากลับมาหาท่าน เพื่อให้ท่านไปกับเราและสู้กับชาวอัมโมน ท่านจะเป็นผู้นำเหนือผู้อาศัยทั้งหมดในกิเลอาด”
9And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead: 'If ye bring me back home to fight with the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, I will be your head.'
9เยฟธาห์ถามว่า “ถ้าพวกท่านพาข้าพเจ้ากลับบ้านไปสู้กับชาวอัมโมน และพระยาห์เวห์ทรงทำให้พวกเขาพ่ายแพ้แก่ข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าจะได้เป็นผู้นำของพวกท่านหรือ?”
10And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah: 'The LORD shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.'
10บรรดาผู้อาวุโสแห่งกิเลอาดตอบว่า “พระยาห์เวห์ทรงเป็นพยานระหว่างเรา เราจะทำตามที่ท่านพูดอย่างแน่นอน”
11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.
11เยฟธาห์จึงไปกับบรรดาผู้อาวุโสแห่งกิเลอาด ประชาชนตั้งเขาเป็นผู้นำและแม่ทัพเหนือพวกเขา เยฟธาห์กล่าวถ้อยคำทั้งหมดของตนต่อหน้าพระยาห์เวห์ที่มิสปาห์
12And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying: 'What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?'
12เยฟธาห์ส่งผู้ส่งข่าวไปยังกษัตริย์แห่งชาวอัมโมนว่า “ท่านมีเรื่องอะไรกับข้าพเจ้า จึงยกมาต่อสู้กับแผ่นดินของข้าพเจ้า?”
13And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah: 'Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; now therefore restore those cities peaceably.'
13กษัตริย์แห่งชาวอัมโมนตอบผู้ส่งข่าวของเยฟธาห์ว่า “เพราะตอนอิสราเอลขึ้นมาจากอียิปต์ เขายึดแผ่นดินของเราตั้งแต่แม่น้ำอารโนนถึงแม่น้ำยับบอกและแม่น้ำจอร์แดน บัดนี้จงคืนดินแดนนั้นมาอย่างสันติ”
14And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;
14เยฟธาห์ส่งผู้ส่งข่าวไปยังกษัตริย์แห่งชาวอัมโมนอีกครั้ง
15and he said unto him: 'Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon.
15และกล่าวว่า “เยฟธาห์กล่าวดังนี้ อิสราเอลไม่ได้ยึดแผ่นดินของโมอับหรือแผ่นดินของชาวอัมโมน
16But when they came up from Egypt, and Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
16แต่เมื่อพวกเขาขึ้นมาจากอียิปต์ อิสราเอลเดินผ่านถิ่นทุรกันดารไปถึงทะเลแดง แล้วมาถึงคาเดช
17then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying: Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not; and Israel abode in Kadesh.
17อิสราเอลส่งผู้ส่งข่าวไปหากษัตริย์เอโดมว่า ‘โปรดให้เราผ่านแผ่นดินของท่าน’ แต่กษัตริย์เอโดมไม่ฟัง อิสราเอลส่งคนไปหากษัตริย์โมอับเช่นกัน แต่กษัตริย์โมอับก็ปฏิเสธ อิสราเอลจึงพักอยู่ที่คาเดช
18Then he walked through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they pitched on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.
18จากนั้นพวกเขาเดินผ่านถิ่นทุรกันดาร อ้อมแผ่นดินเอโดมและแผ่นดินโมอับ มาถึงด้านตะวันออกของแผ่นดินโมอับ และตั้งค่ายอยู่อีกฟากของแม่น้ำอารโนน พวกเขาไม่ได้ล่วงเข้าไปในเขตแดนโมอับ เพราะแม่น้ำอารโนนเป็นพรมแดนโมอับ
19And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him: Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
19อิสราเอลส่งผู้ส่งข่าวไปหาสิโหนกษัตริย์แห่งชาวอาโมไรต์ กษัตริย์แห่งเฮชโบน และกล่าวว่า ‘โปรดให้เราผ่านแผ่นดินของท่านไปยังที่ของเรา’
20But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
20แต่สิโหนไม่ไว้วางใจให้อิสราเอลผ่านเขตแดน เขารวบรวมประชาชนทั้งหมด ตั้งค่ายที่ยาฮาส และสู้รบกับอิสราเอล
21And the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
21พระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอลทรงทำให้สิโหนกับประชาชนทั้งหมดพ่ายแพ้แก่อิสราเอล พวกเขาจึงสังหารคนเหล่านั้น และอิสราเอลก็เข้าครอบครองแผ่นดินทั้งหมดของชาวอาโมไรต์ซึ่งอาศัยอยู่ในดินแดนนั้น
22And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
22พวกเขาครอบครองเขตแดนทั้งหมดของชาวอาโมไรต์ ตั้งแต่แม่น้ำอารโนนถึงแม่น้ำยับบอก และจากถิ่นทุรกันดารถึงแม่น้ำจอร์แดน
23So now the LORD, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?
23บัดนี้พระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอลทรงขับไล่ชาวอาโมไรต์ออกไปให้พ้นจากประชาชนอิสราเอลของพระองค์แล้ว แล้วท่านจะเข้าครอบครองดินแดนของพวกเขาหรือ?
24Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.
24ท่านย่อมครอบครองดินแดนที่เคโมชเทพเจ้าของท่านมอบให้มิใช่หรือ? ดังนั้นชนชาติใดที่พระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของเราทรงขับไล่ออกไปต่อหน้าเรา เราก็จะครอบครองดินแดนของชนชาตินั้น
25And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
25บัดนี้ท่านคิดว่าตนเหนือกว่าบาลาคบุตรศิปโปร์ กษัตริย์แห่งโมอับหรือ? เขาเคยมีข้อพิพาทกับอิสราเอล หรือเคยทำสงครามกับพวกเขาหรือ?
26While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?
26อิสราเอลอาศัยอยู่ในเฮชโบนกับเมืองบริวาร อาโรเออร์กับเมืองบริวาร และเมืองทั้งหมดตามริมแม่น้ำอารโนนมาสามร้อยปีแล้ว ทำไมท่านไม่เอาคืนภายในเวลานั้น?
27I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me; the LORD, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.'
27เพราะฉะนั้นข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้ทำผิดหรือล่วงเกินท่าน แต่ท่านทำผิดต่อข้าพเจ้าด้วยการมารบ ขอให้พระยาห์เวห์ผู้พิพากษาทรงพิพากษาระหว่างชาวอิสราเอลกับชาวอัมโมนในวันนี้”
28Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
28แต่กษัตริย์แห่งชาวอัมโมนไม่ฟังถ้อยคำที่เยฟธาห์ส่งไป
29Then the spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
29แล้วพระวิญญาณของพระยาห์เวห์ทรงเข้ามาทำงานในตัวเยฟธาห์ เขาเดินผ่านกิเลอาดกับมนัสเสห์ ผ่านมิสปาห์แห่งกิเลอาด และจากมิสปาห์แห่งกิเลอาดข้ามไปยังชาวอัมโมน
30And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said: 'If Thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,
30เยฟธาห์ปฏิญาณต่อพระยาห์เวห์ว่า “ถ้าพระองค์ทรงทำให้ชาวอัมโมนพ่ายแพ้แก่ข้าพเจ้าอย่างแน่นอน
31then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.'
31เมื่อข้าพเจ้ากลับจากชาวอัมโมนอย่างปลอดภัย สิ่งใดก็ตามที่ออกจากประตูบ้านมาต้อนรับข้าพเจ้า สิ่งนั้นจะเป็นของพระยาห์เวห์ และข้าพเจ้าจะถวายเป็นเครื่องเผาบูชา”
32So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hand.
32เยฟธาห์ข้ามไปสู้กับชาวอัมโมน และพระยาห์เวห์ทรงทำให้พวกเขาพ่ายแพ้แก่เขา
33And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abel-cheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
33เขาสังหารพวกเขาตั้งแต่อาโรเออร์ไปจนถึงมินนิท รวมยี่สิบเมือง และไปจนถึงอาเบลเครามิม เป็นการสังหารครั้งใหญ่ยิ่ง ชาวอัมโมนจึงถูกปราบต่อหน้าชาวอิสราเอล
34And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
34เมื่อเยฟธาห์กลับถึงบ้านที่มิสปาห์ ทันใดนั้นบุตรสาวของเขาออกมาต้อนรับพร้อมกับตีรำมะนาและเต้นรำ นางเป็นบุตรคนเดียวของเขา นอกจากนางแล้ว เขาไม่มีบุตรชายหรือบุตรสาวอีก
35And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said: 'Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art become my troubler; for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.'
35เมื่อเห็นนาง เขาก็ฉีกเสื้อผ้าและร้องว่า “โธ่ ลูกสาวของพ่อ! ลูกทำให้พ่อตกอยู่ในความทุกข์อย่างยิ่ง และลูกทำให้พ่อปวดร้าวใจ เพราะพ่อได้เอ่ยปากปฏิญาณต่อพระยาห์เวห์แล้ว จะกลับคำไม่ได้”
36And she said unto him: 'My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.'
36นางตอบว่า “พ่อ เมื่อพ่อได้เอ่ยปากต่อพระยาห์เวห์แล้ว ก็จงทำกับลูกตามที่พ่อเอ่ยออกมา เพราะพระยาห์เวห์ทรงแก้แค้นชาวอัมโมนศัตรูของพ่อให้แล้ว”
37And she said unto her father: 'Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.'
37แล้วนางพูดกับบิดาว่า “ขอให้พ่อทำสิ่งหนึ่งให้ลูก ปล่อยลูกไปสองเดือน ให้ลูกกับเพื่อนหญิงลงไปตามภูเขาเพื่อคร่ำครวญที่ลูกจะไม่มีโอกาสแต่งงาน”
38And he said: 'Go.' And he sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
38เขาตอบว่า “ไปได้” แล้วปล่อยนางไปสองเดือน นางกับเพื่อนหญิงไปตามภูเขาและคร่ำครวญที่นางจะไม่มีโอกาสแต่งงาน
39And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed; and she had not known man. And it was a custom in Israel,
39เมื่อครบสองเดือน นางกลับมาหาบิดา เขาก็ทำกับนางตามคำปฏิญาณที่ให้ไว้ นางเป็นสาวพรหมจารี เรื่องนี้กลายเป็นธรรมเนียมในอิสราเอล
40that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
40คือทุกปีบุตรสาวชาวอิสราเอลจะออกไปยกย่องบุตรสาวของเยฟธาห์ชาวกิเลอาด ปีละสี่วัน
