1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah.
1基列 人 耶弗他 是个大能的勇士，是妓女的儿子。 耶弗他 是 基列 所生的。
2And Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him: 'Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.'
2基列 的妻也生了几个儿子：他妻所生的儿子长大了，就赶逐 耶弗他 ，说：「你不可在我们父家承受产业，因为你是妓女的儿子。」
3Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.
3耶弗他 就逃避他的弟兄，去住在 陀伯 地，有些匪徒到他那里聚集，与他一同出入。
4And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
4过了些日子， 亚扪 人攻打 以色列 。
5And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob.
5亚扪 人攻打 以色列 的时候， 基列 的长老到 陀伯 地去，要叫 耶弗他 回来；
6And they said unto Jephthah: 'Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.'
6对 耶弗他 说：「请你来作我们的元帅，我们好与 亚扪 人争战。」
7And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead: 'Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'
7耶弗他 回答 基列 的长老说：「从前你们不是恨我、赶逐我出离父家吗？现在你们遭遇急难为何到我这里来呢？」
8And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah: 'Therefore are we returned to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon, and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.'
8基列 的长老回答 耶弗他 说：「现在我们到你这里来，是要你同我们去，与 亚扪 人争战；你可以作 基列 一切居民的领袖。」
9And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead: 'If ye bring me back home to fight with the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, I will be your head.'
9耶弗他 对 基列 的长老说：「你们叫我回去，与 亚扪 人争战，耶和华把他交给我，我可以作你们的领袖吗？」
10And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah: 'The LORD shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.'
10基列 的长老回答 耶弗他 说：「有耶和华在你我中间作见证，我们必定照你的话行。」
11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.
11于是 耶弗他 同 基列 的长老回去，百姓就立 耶弗他 作领袖、作元帅。 耶弗他 在 米斯巴 将自己的一切话陈明在耶和华面前。
12And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying: 'What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?'
12耶弗他 打发使者去见 亚扪 人的王，说：「你与我有什么相干，竟来到我国中攻打我呢？」
13And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah: 'Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; now therefore restore those cities peaceably.'
13亚扪 人的王回答 耶弗他 的使者说：「因为 以色列 人从 埃及 上来的时候占据我的地，从 亚嫩河 到 雅博河 ，直到 约旦河 。现在你要好好地将这 地 归还吧！」
14And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;
14耶弗他 又打发使者去见 亚扪 人的王，
15and he said unto him: 'Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon.
15对他说：「 耶弗他 如此说， 以色列 人并没有占据 摩押 地和 亚扪 人的地。
16But when they came up from Egypt, and Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
16以色列 人从 埃及 上来乃是经过旷野到 红海 ，来到 加低斯 ，
17then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying: Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not; and Israel abode in Kadesh.
17就打发使者去见 以东 王，说：『求你容我从你的地经过。』 以东 王却不应允。又照样打发使者去见 摩押 王，他也不允准。 以色列 人就住在 加低斯 。
18Then he walked through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they pitched on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.
18他们又经过旷野，绕着 以东 和 摩押 地，从 摩押 地的东边过来，在 亚嫩河 边安营，并没有入 摩押 的境内，因为 亚嫩河 是 摩押 的边界。
19And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him: Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
19以色列 人打发使者去见 亚摩利 王 西宏 ，就是 希实本 的王，对他说：『求你容我们从你的地经过，往我们自己的地方去。』
20But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
20西宏 却不信服 以色列 人，不容他们经过他的境界，乃招聚他的众民在 雅杂 安营，与 以色列 人争战。
21And the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
21耶和华— 以色列 的 神将 西宏 和他的众民都交在 以色列 人手中， 以色列 人就击杀他们，得了 亚摩利 人的全地：
22And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
22从 亚嫩河 到 雅博河 ，从旷野直到 约旦河 。
23So now the LORD, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?
23耶和华— 以色列 的 神在他百姓 以色列 面前赶出 亚摩利 人，你竟要得他们的地吗？
24Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.
24你的神 基抹 所赐你的地你不是得为业吗？耶和华—我们的 神在我们面前所赶出的人，我们就得他的地。
25And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
25难道你比 摩押 王 西拨 的儿子 巴勒 还强吗？他曾与 以色列 人争竞，或是与他们争战吗？
26While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?
26以色列 人住 希实本 和属 希实本 的乡村， 亚罗珥 和属 亚罗珥 的乡村，并沿 亚嫩河 的一切城邑，已经有三百年了；在这三百年之内，你们为什么没有取回这些地方呢？
27I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me; the LORD, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.'
27原来我没有得罪你，你却攻打我，恶待我。愿审判人的耶和华今日在 以色列 人和 亚扪 人中间判断是非。」
28Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
28但 亚扪 人的王不肯听 耶弗他 打发人说的话。
29Then the spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
29耶和华的灵降在 耶弗他 身上，他就经过 基列 和 玛拿西 ，来到 基列 的 米斯巴 ，又从 米斯巴 来到 亚扪 人那里。
30And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said: 'If Thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,
30耶弗他 就向耶和华许愿，说：「你若将 亚扪 人交在我手中，
31then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.'
31我从 亚扪 人那里平平安安回来的时候，无论什么人，先从我家门出来迎接我，就必归你，我也必将他献上为燔祭。」
32So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hand.
32于是 耶弗他 往 亚扪 人那里去，与他们争战；耶和华将他们交在他手中，
33And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abel-cheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
33他就大大杀败他们，从 亚罗珥 到 米匿 ，直到 亚备勒·基拉明 ，攻取了二十座城。这样 亚扪 人就被 以色列 人制伏了。
34And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
34耶弗他 回 米斯巴 到了自己的家，不料，他女儿拿着鼓跳舞出来迎接他，是他独生的，此外无儿无女。
35And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said: 'Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art become my troubler; for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.'
35耶弗他 看见她，就撕裂衣服，说：「哀哉！我的女儿啊，你使我甚是愁苦，叫我作难了；因为我已经向耶和华开口 许愿 ，不能挽回。」
36And she said unto him: 'My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.'
36他女儿回答说：「父啊，你既向耶和华开口，就当照你口中所说的向我行，因耶和华已经在仇敌 亚扪 人身上为你报仇」；
37And she said unto her father: 'Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.'
37又对父亲说：「有一件事求你允准：容我去两个月，与同伴在山上，好哀哭我终为处女。」
38And he said: 'Go.' And he sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
38耶弗他 说：「你去吧！」就容她去两个月。她便和同伴去了，在山上为她终为处女哀哭。
39And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed; and she had not known man. And it was a custom in Israel,
39两月已满，她回到父亲那里，父亲就照所许的愿向她行了。女儿终身没有亲近男子。
40that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
40此后 以色列 中有个规矩，每年 以色列 的女子去为 基列 人 耶弗他 的女儿哀哭四天。
