1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah.
1基列 人 耶弗他 是個大能的勇士，是妓女的兒子。 耶弗他 是 基列 所生的。
2And Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him: 'Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.'
2基列 的妻也生了幾個兒子：他妻所生的兒子長大了，就趕逐 耶弗他 ，說：「你不可在我們父家承受產業，因為你是妓女的兒子。」
3Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.
3耶弗他 就逃避他的弟兄，去住在 陀伯 地，有些匪徒到他那裏聚集，與他一同出入。
4And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
4過了些日子， 亞捫 人攻打 以色列 。
5And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob.
5亞捫 人攻打 以色列 的時候， 基列 的長老到 陀伯 地去，要叫 耶弗他 回來；
6And they said unto Jephthah: 'Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.'
6對 耶弗他 說：「請你來作我們的元帥，我們好與 亞捫 人爭戰。」
7And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead: 'Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'
7耶弗他 回答 基列 的長老說：「從前你們不是恨我、趕逐我出離父家嗎？現在你們遭遇急難為何到我這裏來呢？」
8And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah: 'Therefore are we returned to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon, and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.'
8基列 的長老回答 耶弗他 說：「現在我們到你這裏來，是要你同我們去，與 亞捫 人爭戰；你可以作 基列 一切居民的領袖。」
9And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead: 'If ye bring me back home to fight with the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, I will be your head.'
9耶弗他 對 基列 的長老說：「你們叫我回去，與 亞捫 人爭戰，耶和華把他交給我，我可以作你們的領袖嗎？」
10And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah: 'The LORD shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.'
10基列 的長老回答 耶弗他 說：「有耶和華在你我中間作見證，我們必定照你的話行。」
11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.
11於是 耶弗他 同 基列 的長老回去，百姓就立 耶弗他 作領袖、作元帥。 耶弗他 在 米斯巴 將自己的一切話陳明在耶和華面前。
12And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying: 'What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?'
12耶弗他 打發使者去見 亞捫 人的王，說：「你與我有甚麼相干，竟來到我國中攻打我呢？」
13And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah: 'Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; now therefore restore those cities peaceably.'
13亞捫 人的王回答 耶弗他 的使者說：「因為 以色列 人從 埃及 上來的時候佔據我的地，從 亞嫩河 到 雅博河 ，直到 約旦河 。現在你要好好地將這 地 歸還吧！」
14And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;
14耶弗他 又打發使者去見 亞捫 人的王，
15and he said unto him: 'Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon.
15對他說：「 耶弗他 如此說， 以色列 人並沒有佔據 摩押 地和 亞捫 人的地。
16But when they came up from Egypt, and Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
16以色列 人從 埃及 上來乃是經過曠野到 紅海 ，來到 加低斯 ，
17then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying: Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not; and Israel abode in Kadesh.
17就打發使者去見 以東 王，說：『求你容我從你的地經過。』 以東 王卻不應允。又照樣打發使者去見 摩押 王，他也不允准。 以色列 人就住在 加低斯 。
18Then he walked through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they pitched on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.
18他們又經過曠野，繞着 以東 和 摩押 地，從 摩押 地的東邊過來，在 亞嫩河 邊安營，並沒有入 摩押 的境內，因為 亞嫩河 是 摩押 的邊界。
19And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him: Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
19以色列 人打發使者去見 亞摩利 王 西宏 ，就是 希實本 的王，對他說：『求你容我們從你的地經過，往我們自己的地方去。』
20But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
20西宏 卻不信服 以色列 人，不容他們經過他的境界，乃招聚他的眾民在 雅雜 安營，與 以色列 人爭戰。
21And the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
21耶和華－ 以色列 的上帝將 西宏 和他的眾民都交在 以色列 人手中， 以色列 人就擊殺他們，得了 亞摩利 人的全地：
22And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
22從 亞嫩河 到 雅博河 ，從曠野直到 約旦河 。
23So now the LORD, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?
23耶和華－ 以色列 的上帝在他百姓 以色列 面前趕出 亞摩利 人，你竟要得他們的地嗎？
24Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.
24你的神 基抹 所賜你的地你不是得為業嗎？耶和華－我們的上帝在我們面前所趕出的人，我們就得他的地。
25And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
25難道你比 摩押 王 西撥 的兒子 巴勒 還強嗎？他曾與 以色列 人爭競，或是與他們爭戰嗎？
26While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?
26以色列 人住 希實本 和屬 希實本 的鄉村， 亞羅珥 和屬 亞羅珥 的鄉村，並沿 亞嫩河 的一切城邑，已經有三百年了；在這三百年之內，你們為甚麼沒有取回這些地方呢？
27I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me; the LORD, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.'
27原來我沒有得罪你，你卻攻打我，惡待我。願審判人的耶和華今日在 以色列 人和 亞捫 人中間判斷是非。」
28Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
28但 亞捫 人的王不肯聽 耶弗他 打發人說的話。
29Then the spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
29耶和華的靈降在 耶弗他 身上，他就經過 基列 和 瑪拿西 ，來到 基列 的 米斯巴 ，又從 米斯巴 來到 亞捫 人那裏。
30And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said: 'If Thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,
30耶弗他 就向耶和華許願，說：「你若將 亞捫 人交在我手中，
31then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.'
31我從 亞捫 人那裏平平安安回來的時候，無論甚麼人，先從我家門出來迎接我，就必歸你，我也必將他獻上為燔祭。」
32So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hand.
32於是 耶弗他 往 亞捫 人那裏去，與他們爭戰；耶和華將他們交在他手中，
33And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abel-cheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
33他就大大殺敗他們，從 亞羅珥 到 米匿 ，直到 亞備勒‧基拉明 ，攻取了二十座城。這樣 亞捫 人就被 以色列 人制伏了。
34And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
34耶弗他 回 米斯巴 到了自己的家，不料，他女兒拿着鼓跳舞出來迎接他，是他獨生的，此外無兒無女。
35And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said: 'Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art become my troubler; for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.'
35耶弗他 看見她，就撕裂衣服，說：「哀哉！我的女兒啊，你使我甚是愁苦，叫我作難了；因為我已經向耶和華開口 許願 ，不能挽回。」
36And she said unto him: 'My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.'
36他女兒回答說：「父啊，你既向耶和華開口，就當照你口中所說的向我行，因耶和華已經在仇敵 亞捫 人身上為你報仇」；
37And she said unto her father: 'Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.'
37又對父親說：「有一件事求你允准：容我去兩個月，與同伴在山上，好哀哭我終為處女。」
38And he said: 'Go.' And he sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
38耶弗他 說：「你去吧！」就容她去兩個月。她便和同伴去了，在山上為她終為處女哀哭。
39And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed; and she had not known man. And it was a custom in Israel,
39兩月已滿，她回到父親那裏，父親就照所許的願向她行了。女兒終身沒有親近男子。
40that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
40此後 以色列 中有個規矩，每年 以色列 的女子去為 基列 人 耶弗他 的女兒哀哭四天。
