1掃羅 登基年 四十歲 ；作 以色列 王二年的時候，
1Saul was — years old when he began to reign; and two years he reigned over Israel.
2就從 以色列 中揀選了三千人：二千跟隨 掃羅 在 密抹 和 伯特利 山，一千跟隨 約拿單 在 便雅憫 的 基比亞 ；其餘的人 掃羅 都打發各回各家去了。
2And Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmas and in the mount of Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeath-benjamin; and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3約拿單 攻擊在 迦巴 的 非利士 人的防營， 非利士 人聽見了。 掃羅 就在遍地吹角，意思說，要使 希伯來 人聽見。
3And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the horn throughout all the land, saying: 'Let the Hebrews hear.'
4以色列 眾人聽見 掃羅 攻擊 非利士 人的防營，又聽見 以色列 人為 非利士 人所憎惡，就跟隨 掃羅 聚集在 吉甲 。
4And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also had made himself odious with the Philistines. And the people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.
5非利士 人聚集，要與 以色列 人爭戰，有車三萬輛，馬兵六千，步兵像海邊的沙那樣多，就上來在 伯‧亞文 東邊的 密抹 安營。
5And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude; and they came up, and pitched in Michmas, eastward of Beth-aven.
6以色列 百姓見自己危急窘迫，就藏在山洞、叢林、石穴、隱密處，和坑中。
6When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait — for the people were distressed — then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in holds, and in pits.
7有些 希伯來 人過了 約旦河 ，逃到 迦得 和 基列 地。 掃羅 還是在 吉甲 ，百姓都戰戰兢兢地跟隨他。
7Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8掃羅 照着 撒母耳 所定的日期等了七日。 撒母耳 還沒有來到 吉甲 ，百姓也離開 掃羅 散去了。
8And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed; but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9掃羅 說：「把燔祭和平安祭帶到我這裏來。」 掃羅 就獻上燔祭。
9And Saul said: 'Bring hither to me the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings.' And he offered the burnt-offering.
10剛獻完燔祭， 撒母耳 就到了。 掃羅 出去迎接他，要問他好。
10And it came to pass that, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11撒母耳 說：「你做的是甚麼事呢？」 掃羅 說：「因為我見百姓離開我散去，你也不照所定的日期來到，而且 非利士 人聚集在 密抹 。
11And Samuel said: 'What hast thou done?' And Saul said: 'Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together against Michmas;
12所以我心裏說：恐怕我沒有禱告耶和華。 非利士 人下到 吉甲 攻擊我，我就勉強獻上燔祭。」
12therefore said I: Now will the Philistines come down upon me to Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favour of the LORD; I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt-offering.'
13撒母耳 對 掃羅 說：「你做了糊塗事了，沒有遵守耶和華－你上帝所吩咐你的命令。若遵守，耶和華必在 以色列 中堅立你的王位，直到永遠。
13And Samuel said to Saul: 'Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which He commanded thee; for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
14現在你的王位必不長久。耶和華已經尋着一個合他心意的人，立他作百姓的君，因為你沒有遵守耶和華所吩咐你的。」
14But now thy kingdom shall not continue; the LORD hath sought him a man after His own heart, and the LORD hath appointed him to be prince over His people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.'
15撒母耳 就起來，從 吉甲 上到 便雅憫 的 基比亞 。 掃羅 數點跟隨他的，約有六百人。
15And Samuel arose, and got him up from Gilgal unto Gibeath-benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
16掃羅 和他兒子 約拿單 ，並跟隨他們的人，都住在 便雅憫 的 迦巴 ；但 非利士 人安營在 密抹 。
16And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeath-benjamin; but the Philistines encamped in Michmas.
17有掠兵從 非利士 營中出來，分為三隊：一隊往 俄弗拉 向 書亞 地去，
17And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;
18一隊往 伯‧和崙 去，一隊往 洗波音谷 對面的地境向曠野去。
18and another company turned the way to Beth-horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looketh down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19那時， 以色列 全地沒有一個鐵匠；因為 非利士 人說，恐怕 希伯來 人製造刀槍。
19Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said: 'Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears';
20以色列 人要磨鋤、犂、斧、鏟，就下到 非利士 人那裏去磨。
20but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his plowshare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.
21但有銼可以銼鏟、犂、三齒叉、斧子，並趕牛錐。
21And the price of the filing was a pim for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks with three teeth, and for the axes; and to set the goads.
22所以到了爭戰的日子，跟隨 掃羅 和 約拿單 的人沒有一個手裏有刀有槍的，惟獨 掃羅 和他兒子 約拿單 有。
22So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan; but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
23非利士 人的一隊防兵到了 密抹 的隘口。
23And the garrison of the Philistines went out unto the pass of Michmas.
