1以色列 人出去与 非利士 人打仗，安营在 以便以谢 ； 非利士 人安营在 亚弗 。
1And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer; and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
2非利士 人向 以色列 人摆阵。两军交战的时候， 以色列 人败在 非利士 人面前； 非利士 人在战场上杀了他们的军兵约有四千人。
2And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and when the battle was spread, Israel was smitten before the Philistines; and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3百姓回到营里， 以色列 的长老说：「耶和华今日为何使我们败在 非利士 人面前呢？我们不如将耶和华的约柜从 示罗 抬到我们这里来，好在我们中间救我们脱离敌人的手。」
3And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said: 'Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that He may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.'
4于是百姓打发人到 示罗 ，从那里将坐在二基路伯上万军之耶和华的约柜抬来。 以利 的两个儿子 何弗尼 、 非尼哈 与 神的约柜同来。
4So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who sitteth upon the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5耶和华的约柜到了营中， 以色列 众人就大声欢呼，地便震动。
5And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang.
6非利士 人听见欢呼的声音，就说：「在 希伯来 人营里大声欢呼，是什么缘故呢？」随后就知道耶和华的 约 柜到了营中。
6And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said: 'What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' And they knew that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.
7非利士 人就惧怕起来，说：「有神到了他们营中」；又说：「我们有祸了！向来不曾有这样的事。
7And the Philistines were afraid, for they said: 'God is come into the camp.' And they said: 'Woe unto us! for there was not such a thing yesterday and the day before.
8我们有祸了！谁能救我们脱离这些大能之神的手呢？从前在旷野用各样灾殃击打 埃及 人的，就是这些神。
8Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all manner of plagues and in the wilderness.
9非利士 人哪，你们要刚强，要作大丈夫，免得作 希伯来 人的奴仆，如同他们作你们的奴仆一样。你们要作大丈夫，与他们争战。」
9Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you; quit yourselves like men, and fight.'
10非利士 人和 以色列 人打仗， 以色列 人败了，各向各家奔逃，被杀的人甚多， 以色列 的步兵仆倒了三万。
10And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man to his tent; and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11神的 约 柜被掳去， 以利 的两个儿子 何弗尼 、 非尼哈 也都被杀了。
11And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12当日，有一个 便雅悯 人从阵上逃跑，衣服撕裂，头蒙灰尘，来到 示罗 。
12And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13到了的时候， 以利 正在道旁坐在自己的位上观望，为 神的 约 柜心里担忧。那人进城报信，合城的人就都呼喊起来。
13And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon his seat by the wayside watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14以利 听见呼喊的声音就问说：「这喧嚷是什么缘故呢？」那人急忙来报信给 以利 。
14And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said: 'What meaneth the noise of this tumult?' And the man made haste, and came and told Eli.
15那时 以利 九十八岁了，眼目发直，不能看见。
15Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were set, that he could not see.
16那人对 以利 说：「我是从阵上来的，今日我从阵上逃回。」 以利 说：「我儿，事情怎样？」
16And the man said unto Eli: 'I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to-day out of the army.' And he said: 'How went the matter, my son?'
17报信的回答说：「 以色列 人在 非利士 人面前逃跑，民中被杀的甚多！你的两个儿子 何弗尼 、 非尼哈 也都死了，并且 神的 约 柜被掳去。」
17And he that brought the tidings answered and said: 'Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.'
18他一提 神的 约 柜， 以利 就从他的位上往后跌倒，在门旁折断颈项而死；因为他年纪老迈，身体沉重。 以利 作 以色列 的士师四十年。
18And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died; for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19以利 的儿妇、 非尼哈 的妻怀孕将到产期，她听见 神的 约 柜被掳去，公公和丈夫都死了，就猛然疼痛，曲身生产；
19And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and brought forth; for her pains came suddenly upon her.
20将要死的时候，旁边站着的妇人们对她说：「不要怕！你生了男孩子了。」她却不回答，也不放在心上。
20And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her: 'Fear not; for thou hast brought forth a son.' But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21她给孩子起名叫 以迦博 ，说：「荣耀离开 以色列 了！」这是因 神的 约 柜被掳去，又因她公公和丈夫都死了。
21And she named the child Ichabod, saying: 'The glory is departed from Israel'; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22她又说：「荣耀离开 以色列 ，因为 神的约柜被掳去了。」
22And she said: 'The glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.'
