1亚扪 人 的王 拿辖 上来，对着 基列·雅比 安营。 雅比 众人对 拿辖 说：「你与我们立约，我们就服事你。」
1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash: 'Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.'
2亚扪 人 拿辖 说：「你们若由我剜出你们各人的右眼，以此凌辱 以色列 众人，我就与你们立约。」
2And Nahash the Ammonite said unto them: 'On this condition will I make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.'
3雅比 的长老对他说：「求你宽容我们七日，等我们打发人往 以色列 的全境去；若没有人救我们，我们就出来归顺你。」
3And the elders of Jabesh said unto him: 'Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the borders of Israel; and then, if there be none to deliver us, we will come out to thee.'
4使者到了 扫罗 住的 基比亚 ，将这话说给百姓听，百姓就都放声而哭。
4Then came the messengers to Gibeath-shaul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people; and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5扫罗 正从田间赶牛回来，问说：「百姓为什么哭呢？」众人将 雅比 人的话告诉他。
5And, behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said: 'What aileth the people that they weep?' And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh.
6扫罗 听见这话，就被 神的灵大大感动，甚是发怒。
6And the spirit of God came mightily upon Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.
7他将一对牛切成块子，托付使者传送 以色列 的全境，说：「凡不出来跟随 扫罗 和 撒母耳 的，也必这样切开他的牛。」于是耶和华使百姓惧怕，他们就都出来，如同一人。
7And he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying: 'Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen.' And the dread of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out as one man.
8扫罗 在 比色 数点他们： 以色列 人有三十万， 犹大 人有三万。
8And he numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9众人对那使者说：「你们要回复 基列·雅比 人说，明日太阳近午的时候，你们必得解救。」使者回去告诉 雅比 人，他们就欢喜了。
9And they said unto the messengers that came: 'Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead: To-morrow, by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have deliverance.' And the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
10于是 雅比 人对 亚扪 人说：「明日我们出来归顺你们，你们可以随意待我们。」
10And the men of Jabesh said: 'To-morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.'
11第二日， 扫罗 将百姓分为三队，在晨更的时候入了 亚扪 人的营，击杀他们直到太阳近午，剩下的人都逃散，没有二人同在一处的。
11And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and smote the Ammonites until the heat of the day; and it came to pass, that they that remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
12百姓对 撒母耳 说：「那说『 扫罗 岂能管理我们』的是谁呢？可以将他交出来，我们好杀死他。」
12And the people said unto Samuel: 'Who is he that said: Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.'
13扫罗 说：「今日耶和华在 以色列 中施行拯救，所以不可杀人。」
13And Saul said: 'There shall not a man be put to death this day; for to-day the LORD hath wrought deliverance in Israel.'
14撒母耳 对百姓说：「我们要往 吉甲 去，在那里立国。」
14Then said Samuel to the people: 'Come and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.'
15众百姓就到了 吉甲 那里，在耶和华面前立 扫罗 为王，又在耶和华面前献平安祭。 扫罗 和 以色列 众人大大欢喜。
15And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace-offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
