1Vóór alles dus dring ik er op aan, dat er gebeden, smekingen, voorbeden en dankzeggingen worden opgedragen voor alle mensen;
1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
2voor koningen ook en alle overheden, opdat we een stil en rustig leven mogen leiden in alle vroomheid en eerbaarheid.
2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
3Dit immers is goed en welgevallig aan God onzen Zaligmaker,
3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
4die wil, dat àlle mensen zalig worden en tot de kennis der waarheid geraken.
4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
5Want er is één God, en ook één Middelaar tussen God en de mensen, de Mens Jesus Christus,
5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
6die zich gaf als losprijs voor àllen. Zo luidt de getuigenis voor onze tijd;
6Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
7hiertoe ben ik aangesteld als heraut en apostel, -ik spreek waarheid, geen leugen, -als leraar der heidenen in geloof en in waarheid.
7Where unto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
8Ik verlang dus, dat de mannen bidden overal, en reine handen opheffen zonder toorn en twijfel.
8I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
9Eveneens moeten dan de vrouwen, eerbaar en ingetogen, zich tooien met passende kleding; niet met haarvlechten, goud, paarlen of kostbare kleren,
9In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10maar met goede werken, zoals het vrouwen betaamt, die aanspraak maken op godsdienstigheid.
10But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
11Een vrouw moet onderricht ontvangen, zwijgend en in alle nederigheid.
11Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12Ik sta niet toe, dat de vrouw onderricht geeft of meestert over den man; ze moet zich stil houden.
12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13Want Adam werd het eerst geschapen, daarna Eva.
13For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14Ook werd Adam niet misleid, maar de vrouw werd bedrogen en kwam ten val.
14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
15Toch zal ze zalig worden door het baren van kinderen, zo ze volhardt in geloof, liefde en heiligheid, aan ingetogenheid gepaard.
15Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
