1Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,
1これらのことの後、ペルシア王アルタクセルクセスの治世に、セラヤの子エズラがいた。セラヤはアザルヤの子、アザルヤはヒルキヤの子、
2the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,
2ヒルキヤはシャルムの子、シャルムはツァドクの子、ツァドクはアヒトブの子、
3the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,
3アヒトブはアマルヤの子、アマルヤはアザルヤの子、アザルヤはメラヨテの子、
4the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,
4メラヨテはゼラフヤの子、ゼラフヤはウジの子、ウジはブキの子、
5the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest —
5ブキはアビシュアの子、アビシュアはピネハスの子、ピネハスはエルアザルの子、エルアザルは祭司長アロンの子であった。
6this Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the Law of Moses, which the LORD, the God of Israel, had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.
6このエズラがバビロンから上って来た。彼はイスラエルの神、主が与えられたモーセの律法に精通した書記であった。彼の神、主の御手が彼の上にあったので、王は彼の願いをすべてかなえた。
7And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinim, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.
7アルタクセルクセス王の第七年に、イスラエルの子らの一部、また祭司、レビ人、歌うたいたち、門衛たち、宮のしもべたちの一部がエルサレムに上って来た。
8And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.
8彼は王の第七年の第五の月にエルサレムに着いた。
9For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.
9彼は第一の月の一日にバビロンを出発し、第五の月の一日にエルサレムへ着いた。彼の神の恵み深い御手が彼の上にあったからである。
10For Ezra had set his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and ordinances.
10エズラは主の律法を探究し、それを行い、イスラエルに掟と定めを教えることに心を定めていた。
11Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even the scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD, and of His statutes to Israel:
11これは、祭司であり書記であって、主の命令のことばと、イスラエルに与えられた主の掟に通じていたエズラに、アルタクセルクセス王が与えた手紙の写しである。
12'Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, and so forth. And now
12「王の王アルタクセルクセスから、 完全な天の神の律法に通じた書記、祭司エズラへ。 さて、
13I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and their priests and the Levites, in my realm, that are minded of their own free will to go with thee to Jerusalem, go.
13私は命令する。私の領土内にいるイスラエルの民、その祭司とレビ人のうち、自ら進んでエルサレムへ行こうとする者は皆、あなたとともに行くように。
14Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king and his seven counsellors, to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thy hand;
14あなたは、あなたの手にある神の律法に従ってユダとエルサレムの事情を調査するため、王と七人の顧問によって遣わされる。
15and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,
15また、王と顧問たちが、その住まいがエルサレムにあるイスラエルの神に、自発のささげ物として献げた銀と金を携えよ。
16and all the silver and gold that thou shalt find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill-offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem;
16さらに、バビロン州全域で得られるすべての銀と金を、エルサレムにある彼らの神の家のため、民と祭司たちが進んで献げる自発のささげ物とともに携えて行け。
17therefore thou shalt with all diligence buy with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meal-offerings and their drink-offerings, and shalt offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.
17それゆえ、この金で雄牛、雄羊、子羊、またそれに伴う穀物のささげ物と注ぎのささげ物を必ず買い、エルサレムにあるあなたがたの神の家の祭壇でささげよ。
18And whatsoever shall seem good to thee and to thy brethren to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do ye after the will of your God.
18残った銀と金については、あなたとあなたの同胞がよいと思うことを、あなたがたの神の御心に従って行え。
19And the vessels that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.
19あなたの神の家の奉仕のために託された器は、エルサレムにおられる神の前に納めよ。
20And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king's treasure-house.
20あなたの神の家のためにそのほかの必要が生じ、あなたが支払うべきものがあれば、王の宝物倉から支出せよ。
21And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers that are beyond the River, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done with all diligence,
21私、アルタクセルクセス王は、川の向こう側にいるすべての宝物倉の管理者に命じる。祭司であり天の神の律法の書記であるエズラが求めるものは、何であれ滞りなく与えよ。
22unto a hundred talents of silver, and to a hundred measures of wheat, and to a hundred baths of wine, and to a hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.
22銀は百タラントまで、小麦は百コルまで、ぶどう酒は百バテまで、油は百バテまで、塩は量を定めずに与えよ。
23Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be done exactly for the house of the God of heaven; for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?
23天の神が命じられることは何であれ、天の神の家のために正確に行え。王とその子らの王国に御怒りが下るようなことが、どうしてあってよいだろうか。
24Also we announce to you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, the singers, porters, Nethinim, or servants of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, impost, or toll, upon them.
24さらに知らせる。祭司、レビ人、歌うたいたち、門衛たち、宮のしもべたち、またこの神の家に仕える者たちには、貢ぎ物、関税、通行料を課してはならない。
25And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God that is in thy hand, appoint magistrates and judges, who may judge all the people that are beyond the River, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye him that knoweth them not.
25エズラよ。あなたの手にある神の知恵に従い、川の向こう側にいる民、すなわちあなたの神の律法を知るすべての者を治める役人と裁判官を任命せよ。また、それを知らない者には教えよ。
26And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed upon him with all diligence, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.'
26あなたの神の律法と王の法律を守らない者には、死刑、追放、財産の没収、投獄のいずれであれ、厳正に裁きを執行せよ。」
27Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who hath put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem;
27私たちの父祖の神、主はほめたたえられよ。主はエルサレムにある主の家を美しくするため、このような思いを王の心に置いてくださった。
28and hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened according to the hand of the LORD my God upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
28また王とその顧問たち、王のすべての有力な君たちの前で、私に慈しみを示してくださった。私の神、主の御手が私の上にあったので、私は力づけられ、ともに上る指導者たちをイスラエルの中から集めた。
