1ボアズは町の門へ上って行き、そこに座った。すると、ボアズが話していた贖いの権利を持つ近親者が、ちょうど通りかかった。ボアズは言った。「こちらへ来て、ここに座ってください。」その人は近寄って座った。
1Now Boaz went up to the gate, and sat him down there; and, behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by; unto whom he said: 'Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here.' And he turned aside, and sat down.
2ボアズは町の長老たちから十人を招き、「ここに座ってください」と言った。彼らも座った。
2And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said: 'Sit ye down here.' And they sat down.
3ボアズはその近親者に言った。「モアブの地から帰って来たナオミが、私たちの身内エリメレクの畑を売りに出しています。
3And he said unto the near kinsman: 'Naomi, that is come back out of the field of Moab, selleth the parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's;
4そこで、ここに座っている人々と私の民の長老たちの前で買い取っていただきたいと、あなたに知らせておこうと思いました。あなたが贖うなら、そうしてください。贖わないなら、私に告げてください。あなたのほかに贖う者はなく、私はあなたの次だからです。」 その人は言った。「私が贖いましょう。」
4and I thought to disclose it unto thee, saying: Buy it before them that sit here, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it; but if it will not be redeemed, then tell me, that I may know; for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee.' And he said: 'I will redeem it.'
5するとボアズは言った。「ナオミから畑を買い取る日には、死んだ者の名をその相続地に残すため、死んだ者の妻であるモアブの女ルツをも妻として迎えなければなりません。」
5Then said Boaz: 'What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi — hast thou also bought of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance?'
6その近親者は言った。「それでは、私には贖うことができません。自分の相続地を損なうことになるかもしれないからです。私の贖いの権利を、あなたが引き受けてください。私には贖えません。」
6And the near kinsman said: 'I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance; take thou my right of redemption on thee; for I cannot redeem it.' —
7昔イスラエルでは、贖いや交換に関する事柄を確定するとき、一方が履き物を脱いで相手に渡す習慣があった。これがイスラエルで取引を成立させるしるしであった。
7Now this was the custom in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man drew off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour; and this was the attestation in Israel. —
8そこでその近親者はボアズに、「あなたが買い取ってください」と言い、自分の履き物を脱いだ。
8So the near kinsman said unto Boaz: 'Buy it for thyself.' And he drew off his shoe.
9ボアズは長老たちとすべての民に言った。「私が今日、エリメレクのもの、キルヨンとマフロンのものをすべてナオミから買い取ったことについて、あなたがたは証人です。
9And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people: 'Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.
10私はまた、死んだ者の名をその相続地に残し、その名が兄弟たちの間からも、その町の門からも絶えないようにするため、マフロンの妻であったモアブの女ルツを妻として迎えます。あなたがたは今日、その証人です。」
10Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I acquired to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place; ye are witnesses this day.'
11門にいたすべての民と長老たちは言った。「私たちは証人です。主が、あなたの家に入るこの女性を、ともにイスラエルの家を築いたラケルとレアのようにしてくださいますように。あなたがエフラタで栄え、ベツレヘムで名を上げますように。
11And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said: 'We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel; and do thou worthily in Ephrath, and be famous in Beth-lehem;
12主がこの若い女性によってあなたに与えられる子孫 により、あなたの家が、タマルがユダに産んだペレツの家のようになりますように。」
12and let thy house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.'
13こうしてボアズはルツを迎え、彼女はその妻となった。ボアズが彼女のところに入ると、主はルツを身ごもらせ、彼女は男の子を産んだ。
13So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife; and he went in unto her, and the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son.
14女たちはナオミに言った。「今日、あなたに贖う者を絶やされなかった主がほめたたえられますように。その名がイスラエルでたたえられますように。
14And the women said unto Naomi: 'Blessed be the LORD, who hath not left thee this day without a near kinsman, and let his name be famous in Israel.
15その子はあなたの命を新たにし、老年のあなたを支えるでしょう。あなたを愛し、七人の息子にもまさる嫁が、その子を産んだのですから。」
15And he shall be unto thee a restorer of life, and a nourisher of thine old age; for thy daughter-in-law, who loveth thee, who is better to thee than seven sons, hath borne him.'
16ナオミはその子を胸に抱き、世話をする者となった。
16And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.
17近所の女たちは、「ナオミに男の子が生まれた」と言って、その子に名を付けた。彼女たちは彼をオベデと名付けた。オベデはエッサイの父、ダビデの祖父である。
17And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying: 'There is a son born to Naomi'; and they called his name Obed; he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18ペレツの系図は次のとおりである。ペレツにはヘツロンが生まれ、
18Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez begot Hezron;
19ヘツロンにはラムが生まれ、ラムにはアミナダブが生まれ、
19and Hezron begot Ram, and Ram begot Amminadab;
20アミナダブにはナフションが生まれ、ナフションにはサルモンが生まれ、
20and Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon;
21サルモンにはボアズが生まれ、ボアズにはオベデが生まれ、
21and Salmon begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Obed;
22オベデにはエッサイが生まれ、エッサイにはダビデが生まれた。
22and Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David.
